Chapter 7 - Thirsty

Jason was extremely thirsty as he woke up in the middle of the night; he was still in his uniform, his tongue feeling so dry and rough. He forced himself out of bed and looked across the room.

His roommate, Kenny, was snoring heavily, oblivious to anything going on in the room. Jason stripped out of his uniform and put on casual clothes before stepping out of his room.

As he stepped into the hallway, the place was more silent and eerie than before. Doors were slammed shut; some still had lights on, some had none. Jason silently walked down the hallway, his feet moving silently across the padded floor.

He reached the elevator and stepped in, glancing at the buttons on the side, and then remembered he didn't even know where the cafeteria was. He hadn't gotten lunch at all, so he was unsure.

'Maybe it's the down floor. It has to be the down floor.' He thought. 'Or maybe the last floor of this building. '

He wasn't sure; he should have gotten lunch when the time came, and now look at the mess he was in. He scrolled through the buttons again, with his eyes thinking rapidly.

'I have to hurry.' He thought. 'I'm very much aware that guards patrol the hallways at night.'

He pressed for the top floor of the building, and the elevator quickly shut and began its descent. Jason waited silently, praying no one was on the floors and wanting to use the elevator.

After five minutes, the elevator had reached the top floor, and he got out. It was another hallway, possibly longer than the others. It looked like maybe the staff slept here. He was about to turn back when a door at the end of the hall suddenly opened alarmingly.

In a split second, Jason had left the elevator and slipped into the first door close to him, closed it silently, and waited with bated breath. Sweat dripped from his forehead as he heard footsteps coming down the hall.

Jason turned and walked down the dark staircase, making sure not to make a sound at all. He was going to wait for thirty minutes before going up and checking again. he reached the end of the staircase and found himself in a deep tunnel.

Jason shivered as he stepped into murky-smelling water on the floor of the tunnel, wires sparking with electricity in circuit breakers that were still open. It was pitch black, and Jason could hardly see a thing.

'Shit.' He thought. 'Should I have been patient and waited until morning?'

He definitely should have, as a rat scurried past his leg; he knew nothing about this place. He was making a big mistake.

'That person should be out of the hallway.' Jason thought. 'I should leave this place. I don't need any trouble right now.'

He turned to leave, but suddenly a light began to faintly appear in the distance. Jason didn't need to have a second thought; somebody was coming. He rapidly looked around in the darkness and decided to rush up the stairs and stay in the middle.

If he tried opening the door, the sound would alert GHD Pexon that somebody was here; if he stayed where he was, he would be caught like a deer in headlights, and it wouldn't be pretty.

He quickly rushed up the stairs and hid in the darkness. As the light became more visible and his eyes adjusted to the glow, he noticed two men standing with torches in their hands, and they were standing at a metallic door with yellow stripes plastered on the front.

He could hear their voices, and he craned his ears to listen.

"Did you use force on the door?" The first man asked.

"Of course I did." The other man replied. "It's not budging, no way at all. I'm still amazed at how that man was able to create a door like this that can even negate abilities."

"Are you serious?" The first man spoke. "You know Ms. Emia just informed us that Dr.Peugeot wants this door to be open in the next three days, or else we're done. We will be dismissed from the mission and will not receive our paycheck. "

"That's impossible! I've been here every night for the past two weeks trying to break it, but it has been futile. We need more time.'

"Try again, then."

The second man grumbled before, to Jason's amazement, stretching his right arm backwards, and it suddenly began to turn black and thick with hair sprouting, resembling that of a gorilla's arm, and with force, he drove his fist into the metal door, the sound echoing across the tunnels.

The guard winced in pain as he removed his arm; the metal door had not budged at all, not even a dent.

"I told you, man." The man turned back to his partner. "It's not working. It didn't even dent at all."

"Then Dr. Peugeot is going to have our heads." The first man replied grimly. "We need to leave and inform him. Abilities don't work on the door. It looks like Dr. Hendrix created a mechanism that can open the door, and he failed to share it with Dr. Peugeot. Even after death, he still haunts him."

"So that means the mission is a failure? For heaven's sake, we've been impersonating instructors for two weeks. Do you know how many rules I broke to be on this mission?"

"It's not like you didn't enjoy it, though. " The first man fired back. "Don't think I don't know about that female instructor who was with you in the toilet."

"Shut up! There could be audio cameras in these walls. Let's just go and inform Emia."

The men turned and walked away, back into the tunnels, while Jason waited until their echoing footsteps faded and he couldn't hear them anymore. Curiosity forced him down the stairs again as he walked to where the men were standing before. He hadn't noticed the huge metal door before, but now he could see it clearly.

The metal door had no dent as the man had spoken; it looked perfectly normal, so why couldn't it open? Jason leaned in closer, and then something caught his eye. It was a key fob, and it was designed as a capital X.

'Wait, an X,' Jason thought. 'Why is it shaped like an X?'

Suddenly, his chain began to vibrate, and he stepped back in shock. It began to glow red, illuminating the dark tunnel in a mysterious glow. The fob on the door began to glow as well, and it was the same colour as his chain.

'Could my chain be the key?' Jason thought as he looked around. 'It looks like it.'

Jason then stepped closer, removed the chain from his neck, and then inserted it into the lock. To his amazement, it fitted perfectly, and the door whirred before it slid open with a hiss.

'Guess I have to enter, then.' He thought.

Without hesitation, Jason walked in, and then the door shut, echoing across the tunnel.
