Chapter 73 - Chapter 73: The New Students

The first rays of dawn bathed the Sacred Peaks in golden light.

For the successful applicants...

Today marked the beginning of a new life.

---

Long before sunrise...

Hundreds of young men and women had already gathered in the Grand Assembly Plaza.

Some were nervous.

Others were excited.

Many stood proudly beside the friends they had made during the journey.

Kieran stood with Mira, Ronan, and Selene.

Though they had known one another for only a few weeks...

The four naturally remained together.

---

The great bronze bells rang nine times.

Dong...

Dong...

Dong...

Their echoes rolled across the mountains.

At once...

The entire plaza fell silent.

From the highest staircase...

Dozens of Academy Elders descended in orderly rows.

None released their cultivation.

None displayed their authority.

Yet everyone instinctively lowered their heads in respect.

Among them walked an elderly man dressed in simple white robes.

There were no ornaments.

No extravagant aura.

No attendants.

He looked no different from an ordinary old scholar.

Yet the moment he appeared...

Every elder behind him unconsciously slowed their pace by half a step.

The Headmaster had arrived.

---

He walked to the center of the platform.

His calm gaze swept over every successful applicant.

For a long moment...

He said nothing.

The silence itself became the lesson.

Only when every restless heart had settled did he begin to speak.

"Welcome..."

"...to the Grand Academy."

His voice was gentle.

Yet every word reached every corner of the plaza.

"You have passed our entrance examination."

"Do not mistake this for success."

"It is merely permission..."

"...to begin learning."

---

His eyes drifted across the gathered students.

"Some of you possess extraordinary talent."

"Some possess remarkable determination."

"Others possess wisdom beyond your years."

He smiled faintly.

"None of these guarantee greatness."

"What determines your future..."

"...is whether you continue learning after believing yourself accomplished."

---

The Headmaster raised one hand.

Behind him...

Hundreds of jade tokens floated into the air.

Each token emitted a soft glow.

"These are your identity tokens."

"They represent your place within the Academy."

"They will record your contributions, your achievements, and your progress."

"They are not symbols of status."

"They are reminders."

"A cultivator's worth is earned anew each day."

---

The jade tokens flew toward their owners.

One stopped before Kieran.

He caught it gently.

The smooth white jade felt cool to the touch.

Engraved upon one side were the words:

Grand Academy

The reverse simply read:

Kieran

Below it...

Outer Court Disciple

---

As everyone examined their tokens...

The Headmaster continued.

"The next three months..."

"...will determine your first ranking."

"Not through combat alone."

"But through every aspect of your growth."

"The Academy nurtures complete cultivators."

"Not merely strong ones."

---

An elder stepped forward.

"The Outer Court has four primary divisions."

"Martial Studies."

"Scholarly Studies."

"Craft Studies."

"Practical Studies."

"You are encouraged to explore all of them."

"Your Path..."

"...is yours to discover."

---

Kieran's eyes brightened slightly.

There wasn't just one way to grow.

There were many.

Just as Crystal and Kael had always taught him.

---

Suddenly...

The Headmaster's gaze paused.

Just for an instant...

It rested upon Kieran.

Neither spoke.

Neither moved.

Yet Kieran felt as though the old man had somehow seen through every layer of pretense.

There was no pressure.

No probing.

Only...

Recognition.

The Headmaster smiled almost imperceptibly before looking away.

"A sincere child."

He thought.

"And one carrying an unusually quiet heart."

That was all.

He sensed nothing of the Ancient Foundation Seal.

Only the unusual calm surrounding the boy.

---

The ceremony soon concluded.

Senior students stepped forward to guide the newcomers.

An energetic young woman waved toward Kieran's group.

"Outer Court Residence District Three!"

"Follow me!"

Mira immediately hurried over.

"This place is enormous!"

The senior student laughed.

"You've only seen one percent of it."

"What?"

Ronan's usually calm expression cracked ever so slightly.

Selene adjusted her glasses.

"I suddenly feel very small."

---

As they followed the senior student...

The Academy unfolded before them.

Training fields stretched across mountain terraces.

Libraries larger than noble estates occupied entire valleys.

Beast habitats rested beneath waterfalls.

Massive arenas were carved directly into the mountainsides.

Students from every year walked the paths.

Some sparred.

Some debated.

Some meditated beneath ancient trees.

Others hurried to lessons carrying stacks of books.

Everywhere...

People were learning.

---

Their guide eventually stopped before a cluster of elegant courtyards.

"These are your residences."

"Two students per house."

She handed each of them small wooden plaques.

"Kieran."

"Ronan."

"You'll share Courtyard Seven."

Mira grinned.

"Looks like you two are roommates."

Ronan simply nodded.

"I have no objections."

"Neither do I."

Kieran replied.

---

As he stepped into his new home...

He placed his travel bag beside the bed.

The room was simple.

Clean.

Comfortable.

Sunlight filtered through the wooden windows.

For the first time since leaving the Hidden Valley...

Kieran truly felt that one chapter of his life had ended.

And another...

Had begun.

That evening...

As the Academy settled into peaceful silence...

A faint thread of Magna drifted naturally through the room.

Without conscious effort...

It circled Kieran once.

Then twice.

Before disappearing into his body.

He didn't notice.

But deep within him...

The Ancient Foundation Seal responded with another almost inaudible sound.

Crack...

A second, finer fracture appeared.

The time Crystal had waited twelve years for...

Was drawing near.
