Chapter 223 - Chapter 223: The Gathered Circle

Gen waited at his pavilion, alone. With nothing left to do, he closed his eyes and circulated his Qi once more. With four Acupoints now open, he needed focus and practice. Otherwise, he might have the gates wide, but no mastery of the Wheels they governed.

While he was training, concentrating on the sharp, dividing clarity of **Fendow** at his Crown, he suddenly heard a voice at the side of the pavilion.

"Fendow is separation in its purest form," the voice said, calm and instructive. "What can or cannot be divided is entirely up to how you use and understand the Wheel."

Gen's eyes flickered open. His aura settled. The voice. The familiar feeling. Without even turning his head, he already recognized it. He quickly stood up to meet the man.

"Master Ting!" he called out, the joy in his voice stark against the mountain's quiet.

Ting stood there, his old, scarred face wearing a look of profound assessment. He shook his head slowly. "By the Wheels, boy. What kind of journey have you been through?"

Gen scratched his head, laughing awkwardly, the sound rusty from disuse. His gaze then shifted to the younger man beside Ting. Kaito. His figure had matured, grown calmer. His aura was serene, like clear, deep water, but it held a focused depth Gen could not yet fathom.

"Took your time, Gen," Kaito said, a genuine smile touching his eyes.

The three of them—Gen, Ting, and Kaito—sat around the low table in the pavilion. Each and every one of them had changed in their own right. They were no longer the refugees from the Jade Palace. Under the falling moonlight that filtered through the mountain mist, they chatted, Gen trying to reclaim the months of absence with words that felt too small.

After a while, Ting's expression grew solemn. He placed his cup down with a soft *click*.

"Gen," he said, his voice low. "I do not wish to break the mood, but I hope you understand. You do not have much time left."

Those words instantly silenced the fragile joy that had permeated the air. Gen's face turned quiet, the forced ease melting away. He looked at the bracelet, the third petal now grey.

"Buqu will be coming for me soon," Gen said, his voice flat. "I can't stay here anyway. It's… fine, Master Ting."

Ting shook his head, a gesture of fond exasperation. "How stubborn are you? We would help you, Gen. You do not have to bear it all alone."

Kaito nodded, his serene composure hardening into certainty. "We have gotten stronger. Believe me, I wouldn't lose to just anyone now."

At the same moment, Li Fen stepped out from behind the doorway, a basket of desert fruits in her hands. She laughed, a sound of amused affection at their boasts. "Don't listen to them. They have been itching for a fight for too long, cooped up on this mountain." She placed the basket on the table, her movements graceful. Then she added, her tone softening, "But they are right on one thing, Gen. You are not alone in this. The Damocles is a threat not to you alone, but to all of us. If they fall, none of this," she gestured to the peaceful pavilion, the mountain around them, "will have any meaning."

Gen's lips parted, the old, ingrained mantra rising automatically—*I can handle it alone, I must bear the burden alone, it's my fault, my responsibility.*

But then he looked at them. At Ting's weathered, resolute face. At Kaito's calm, ready strength. At Li Fen's eyes, which held not pity, but a fierce, shared determination. Their bright, unwavering loyalty.

Then it clicked.

The words died in his throat. His lips moved again, but this time, they simply formed, "Thank you."

After all, *Gen Jiang*, Son of the Immortal, might have to carry the world. But simple *Gen*… he had friends.

The group spent the entire night chatting, telling stories, and listening to Ting's hard-won wisdom. Despite being reduced to a mere guest on this mountain, he was still the old Palace Lord of the Jade Palace. His strength and wisdom were a deep, quiet well from which they all drew.

Afterwards, Gen spent the rest of his time meditating in the little house. Kaito and Li Fen would occasionally pass by to say hello. Master Ting guided him on the principles of **Fendow**, his insights sharp and practical, causing Gen's understanding to improve even faster, day by day.

However, there was never any sign of Lorel. Not on the second day, nor the third.

On the morning of the fourth day, as the fourth petal sealed itself with a final, silent shudder, Gen ended his training. He looked at the bracelet. One petal remained, a lone spot of luminous jade amid a field of grey stone.

He picked up his traveling cloak. He stood in the center of the room, marking the edges of the little house one last time in his mind. The peace here had been a gift, but it was not his.

That evening, as Li Fen and Kaito came to visit as usual, they were surprised to see Gen dressed for travel, his few belongings gathered.

"Where are you going?" Li Fen asked, her surprise edged with worry. "There is still a full day on your bracelet."

Kaito stepped forward, his calmness replaced by urgency. "You can't just leave like that. We will come with you."

Gen shook his head, a soft, resigned smile on his lips. He glanced deep into the heart of the Lost Triangle, towards the highest, most secluded pavilions, and then back at his friends. "No," he said, his voice firm. "If Buqu was to attack the Lost Triangle… I fear even this shield would shatter into fragments in a matter of seconds." He met their eyes. "Even if I would like your help… I can't put all these people in danger. I will leave first. You can follow, if you choose."

Li Fen started to speak, her face a conflict of duty and desire. "But I want to—"

Kaito placed a steadying hand on her shoulder, shaking his head slowly. He understood.

Gen's smile was gentle, tinged with a sadness that was also a form of peace. "It's fine. I understand." He looked once more towards the mountain's silent peak. "Lorel is not an object I can collect however I want. She has chosen her freedom. And I respect that." He let out a long breath, as if releasing a weight he'd carried for years. "Just as Zeph respected my father's sacrifice and gave us these five years… I was naive all this time."

Li Fen and Kaito could only watch, a complex mix of pride and sorrow in their eyes, as Gen's lonely back turned. He walked down the path, deeper into the Lost Triangle's inner forest, heading for its eastern exit. He wanted to leave unnoticed, just like the shadow he had become.

However, despite all of that, he wasn't feeling angry. Not at Lorel. Not at his friends. Not at himself.

He was free, now. He hadn't gotten her back. Fine. This was just how things were supposed to be. Just like the immutable nature of the Damocles in the sky, he had to accept it.

Unknown to Gen, the Mark of the Tower of Wonder on his back, the brand of his deepest blockage, began to fade. It didn't vanish completely. Half of it remained, a ghostly echo of the lesson he had learned, and a shadow of what he still needed to understand.

As he reached the edge of the forest, where the manicured paths gave way to wilder trails leading out, a figure suddenly walked out from behind the broad trunk of an ancient pine.

"Gen."

Her voice was softer than any melody his ears had ever heard. It was a sound from a dream he'd almost given up on.

Gen froze. He turned.

There she finally stood.

Lorel Feng. His one-year-older betrothed. The girl was gone. In her place was a grown woman, her beauty not soft, but composed of grace and quiet authority. She walked towards him, each step measured, until she was at his level.

Gen smiled, a shy, awkward tilt of his head, unsure of what to say.

But he didn't need to.

Lorel's hands came up and wrapped around his neck. Her body settled against his own, fitting into the space he had carried empty for so long. She buried her face in the crook of his shoulder.

"I missed you," she murmured, the words warm and damp against his skin.

Gen's heart wavered for an instant, a dam of resolve breaking. Then he reciprocated the hug, his arms sealing firmly around her waist, pulling her closer. The duo stood there without a word, the mountain scenery, the fading light, the very passage of time—all of it seeming to stop just for them in that moment.

So many things ran through Lorel's mind as she held him. After so many months away from each other, he was finally back. She had refused to run to him under the old conditions. She didn't want to be seen as the burdened duty anymore, the older girl betrothed to him out of obligation. *What if they call us out? What if they say I am older than you, Gen? What if—*

Gen simply held her more firmly, his voice a low rumble in his chest. "I will break the mouth of whoever speaks."

At the exact same moment, the mark left by the Tower of Wonder on Lorel's back—the mirror to his own, the symbol of *her* deepest blockage—slowly faded, as if it had never been there before. Her path to assertion was complete.

After they separated, Lorel took his hand. Her eyes were clear, certain.

"Come over here," she said. "I would like to show you the Lost Triangle."

Gen took one last glance at the eastern exit, the path to his solitary war. Then he looked at Lorel, at her face, finally seeing him without walls, without conditions.

He followed her, hand in hand, back into the heart of the mountain.
