Chapter 87 - CH 87: Only Us – The Heir’s Claim on His Mother

The VVIP room was too quiet for a hospital.

Thick cream carpet swallowed the noise from the corridor. The air smelled of antiseptic layered over expensive linen and faint cologne. The curtains were drawn halfway, leaving a pale strip of afternoon light across the polished floor. Somewhere beyond the sealed wing, a distant trolley rattled and a monitor beeped in another room, both sounds dulled by the heavy door.

Fin lay on the wide private bed, staring at the ceiling. The mattress was too soft. The sheets were cool against his back. One bandaged hand turned slowly in the air, as if he were tracing a plan only he could see. A small dressing sat on his forehead, tight enough that he could feel it pull whenever he frowned. The rest of him looked almost untouched.

The door opened without a knock.

Echo 1 entered first, long hair tied back, his brown jacket still carrying the faint smell of oil, rain, and metal. Echo 2 followed and closed the door behind her. The latch clicked softly. She leaned against the wall with the same bored calm she had shown on the ship, an unused lollipop stem resting between her fingers.

"The package was secured and moved to a safe location, Master," Echo 1 said.

Fin hummed. The sound sat low in his throat.

"Has my mother arrived?"

"Madam Harrington is receiving a briefing in the head psychiatrist's office," Echo 2 answered. "For now, everything is happening as you planned."

Fin sat up slowly. The movement pulled at the dressing on his forehead. A thin sting ran across the skin, and he drew in a short breath through his nose before settling his back against the headboard. The pillow behind him was stiff, over-starched, and still held the hospital's clean, impersonal scent.

"Secure the car and dismantle it discreetly. I don't want Marcus picking apart the little accident we staged. I don't want any mistakes."

"Echo 4 is already at the scene, sir," Echo 1 said. "He will finish the necessary work and deal with the car quietly."

Fin looked at them for a moment. After traveling with them these past few days, he had begun to understand them better. Their experience had already proven more useful than he expected. Their loyalty was absolute, but it was their precision that made them valuable.

"You can ask what is troubling you, One."

Echo 1 was silent for a few seconds. Then he spoke, a faint smile at the edge of his mouth.

"I cannot help doubting that Madam Harrington will accept a staged accident and a bought doctor's report. If she ever learns we purchased a physician's silence and put you into a reckless crash, I would rather not think about our future."

Fin smiled and nodded.

"That's true. My mother has an eye for schemes. People often look down on her because she is a woman, and she lets them. She has a habit of allowing others to believe they are playing her hand until she reveals her own. But she is not without a weakness."

He closed his eyes. The dressing tugged again. Behind his lids, he could still see the road, the staged wreck, the flash of light before the world went white.

"She is always reckless when it comes to me. And that is what worries me too."

Both Echoes stayed silent. The only sound left in the room was the low hush of the air vent.

Larry's office smelled of paper, coffee, and old wood polish. Pale light came through slatted blinds and laid thin bars across the desk. Eleanor sat with her hands folded in her lap. The fabric of her charcoal skirt was smooth under her fingers. Marcus stood behind her, close enough that she could hear the faint shift of his coat. Elena watched the doctor without blinking, the slim case resting against her knee.

"Then how do you propose we proceed, Doctor?" Eleanor asked.

Larry chose his words with care. His voice was calm, but the pen in his hand tapped once against the file before he stopped it.

"After speaking briefly with Mr. Harrington, I was able to identify one thing clearly. He trusts you more than anyone else, Miss Harrington. Until he becomes calmer and begins to socialize again, you should be the one to take care of him. I am not saying you should confine him to a room. Let him go out. Let him do what he wants. But you should spend most of your time with him, especially at night."

He paused. The clock on the wall ticked too loudly in the quiet.

"People in his present state often make dangerous decisions when they are left alone after dark. Given that he has recently been separated from his girlfriend, I would advise you not to leave him at night. If possible, stay near his bed until he can think reasonably again."

The room went still.

No one treated the advice as strange. They had seen enough of what Fin had been through to believe the warning. Elena looked down at her notes and did not write. Eleanor felt the words settle in her chest like cold water.

She understood the medical language. She also understood what sat underneath it.

Fin might not be stable. There was a chance he could harm himself. That possibility frightened her more than anything she had faced in years.

Eleanor rose from the chair. The leather creaked softly under her.

"We will stay in contact, Doctor," she said. "And I will stay with my son for as long as he needs."

Larry nodded, relief visible for the first time. A little color returned to his face.

"That would be best."

Eleanor turned toward the door. Marcus stepped aside at once. Elena followed, her heels quiet on the carpet.

In the corridor, the VVIP floor was still sealed. The air was colder here, sharp with disinfectant. Echo Team remained at Fin's door as if they had always belonged there. One of them shifted his weight; leather and metal made a small sound and then went still again.

Eleanor stopped a few paces away. For a moment she only looked at the closed door. The guilt sat cold and silent in her chest, heavy as the coat on her shoulders.

Then she smoothed the front of her coat, set her face back into order, and walked forward to see her son.

The door opened.

Eleanor barely noticed the room. Her eyes found the young man in the hospital bed, and everything else faded into the background. Marcus and Elena remained outside. The door closed behind her with a soft, final click.

She walked toward the bed, her fingers curling and uncurling at her sides as she fought to contain the anger and fear churning inside her.

"Mother," Fin said.

The quiet word struck harder than she expected.

Eleanor stopped beside the bed. Fin turned his face toward the ceiling, avoiding her eyes.

"You didn't have to come," he muttered. "It's just a minor accident."

"An accident?"

Her voice trembled. She swallowed, trying to steady it, but the question came out sharper than she'd intended.

"Fin, why would you do this to yourself?"

He glanced at her. "Do what?"

"Don't play games with me." She leaned closer, searching his face. "Look at me, Fin. Did you try to kill yourself?"

His expression hardened. He turned toward the curtains.

"What the hell are you talking about? I lost control of the car. That's all."

Since when was this a suicide attempt? What the hell did that doctor tell her?

Eleanor saw only her injured son, lying beneath white hospital sheets with a dressing on his forehead and a bandage around his hand. The doctor's warning had been echoing in her head ever since she'd heard it.

"Don't lie to me." Her voice rose despite her efforts to control it. "You've been driving since you were fourteen. You handle cars better than half the men I trust with this family's security. And now I'm supposed to believe you simply lost control of a car worth millions?"

She shook her head, her eyes shining.

"I know you, Fin. You don't make mistakes like that. Not unless you stop caring what happens afterward."

His fists tightened beneath the sheets.

He had wanted to frighten her. Maybe even make her feel a fraction of the pain she'd caused him.

He hadn't expected her to believe he'd wanted to die.

"It was an accident," he repeated.

But the words lacked conviction now.

"No." Eleanor stepped closer. "You were driving recklessly, and you knew exactly what you were doing. After everything that happened with Clara, you stopped caring whether you made it home."

Fin abruptly pushed himself upright, wincing as pain pulled through his injured body.

"Who gave you the right to come in here and interrogate me?"

"I am your mother!"

"And that gives you the right to what? Decide what I feel? Tell me what I meant? Explain my own life to me?"

"Fin, please..."

"No. Just leave me alone."

The plea died on Eleanor's lips.

Fin gave her a thin, humorless smile.

"Go back to your husband. You seemed perfectly happy when you told me all about him."

Eleanor went still.

"Julian has nothing to do with this."

"Of course he doesn't." Fin let out a bitter laugh. "Nothing ever has anything to do with anything, does it? You make a decision, and the rest of us are expected to accept it. You bring a stranger into our home, tell me it's settled, and expect me to carry on as if nothing has changed."

"I did what I thought was best for this family."

"You always do."

The words came quietly, but there was more venom in them than there had been in his shouting.

"You decide what's best. You keep your secrets. You tell me what I need to know and hide everything else. And when I finally react, you look at me as if there's something wrong with me."

Eleanor's hands trembled at her sides.

"You think I wanted any of this?" she asked. "You think I wanted to stand here and wonder whether my own son was trying to get himself killed?"

Her voice broke.

"I can deal with anger, Fin. I can deal with you hating me. But don't ask me to stand by your hospital bed and pretend I'm not terrified of losing you."

For the first time, Fin had no immediate answer.

Eleanor wiped at her eyes, almost angrily, as though she resented the tears for appearing in front of him.

"I came here because you're my son. Because no matter what happens between us, I cannot simply stop caring whether you live or die."

Fin watched her in silence. The anger in his expression remained, but something wounded flickered beneath it.

"Then why wasn't that enough?" he asked.

Eleanor frowned. "What?"

"Why wasn't I enough?"

His voice was quieter now, stripped of some of its hostility. Somehow, that made the question hurt more.

"I told you what I was going through, Mother. I trusted you with things I couldn't tell anyone else. I didn't even know how to explain what was happening inside my own head, but I tried. I let you see it anyway."

He looked down at his bandaged hand.

"And then you brought Julian into our home."

Eleanor drew a shaky breath. "Fin, that's not what happened."

"Then tell me what did happen." He raised his eyes to hers. "Tell me why you thought I could live with it. Tell me why you never once stopped to ask what it would do to me."

"I never meant to hurt you."

"But you did."

The answer came without hesitation.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Fin's jaw tightened. When he spoke again, his voice was low, almost disbelieving.

"You knew what I was struggling with. You knew how much I needed you, and you still did it. So tell me, Mother..."

He held her gaze.

"Were you really that desperate for another man?"

The words landed harder than a slap.

Eleanor's expression broke, then froze into the cold look Fin had only seen a few times in his life. Her body trembled as she crossed the last space between them. The sentence kept repeating in her head, ugly and impossible to shut out.

Were you that desperate for another man?

Her hand rose before she fully knew she had lifted it.

The blow never landed.

Fin caught her wrist. His eyes had gone as empty as hers. He stood from the bed and kept hold of her.

"Let go of me."

"No."

The word was quiet. It still changed the air in the room.

Eleanor's jaw tightened. She tried to pull free. Fin did not release her. He drew her closer instead, and Eleanor stumbled into his chest, startled by the sudden closeness, by the sheer audacity of it. She looked up and found a certainty in his face that did not belong to the boy she remembered.

Fin looked down at her and did not step back.

"Do you remember what you told me in the painting room?"

Eleanor could not answer. Her thoughts had gone blank. The hospital light, the dressing on his forehead, the heat of his hand around her wrist — all of it pressed in at once.

"You said it was always us," Fin said. "You and me. Not two separate people. I could not answer you then. I can answer you now."

He leaned in. Eleanor swallowed as his breath touched her cheek.

"It is always us. It will always be us. No one comes between us. If anyone tries, I will not allow them to remain."

He paused, close enough that she could feel the words as much as hear them.

"And if you ever choose someone else over me, I will not stay in this world without you. As long as we are both breathing, it is us. Only us. Always."

Eleanor stood rigid in his arms. The coat on her shoulders suddenly felt too heavy. The son she had protected from every threat she could see was looking at her with a devotion so absolute it no longer felt safe.

She had come into this room afraid he had driven into that accident because he wanted to die.

Now she was afraid of what he had decided to live for.

Her fingers, still caught in his grip, slowly stopped fighting.

"You should not say things like that to me," she whispered.

Fin's hold did not loosen.

"I already did."
