Chapter 224 - Chapter 224: The Rescue at Elche! Neymar Curls, Lorenzo Steals!

The Barcelona dressing room at halftime was quieter than it had been in weeks.

Martino stood in front of the tactics board with his back turned to the squad for two long, uncomfortable minutes. Nobody spoke. Iniesta sat on the edge of the treatment table with a damp towel draped over his face. Alves took short, frustrated swigs from his water bottle, and Bartra kept his eyes glued to the floor between his boots.

Finally, Martino turned around.

"I got it wrong," he said plainly, keeping his voice steady and low. "I rested three key starters against a side that had every reason to punish us for it. That falls on my shoulders, not on any of you in this room. Keep that clear in your heads first."

He tapped a knuckle against the board.

"Second half changes. Xavi steps in for Sergi Roberto. Lorenzo comes on for Alexis. Piqué stays off because his ankle is still acting up, and compounding one mistake with another solves nothing. Marc, you stay in the backline. Keep that defensive line pushed high. Mascherano, talk him through every single phase."

Mascherano gave a firm nod. Bartra let out a deep, steady breath.

"Nobody panics out there. Move the ball cleanly. We build the same multi-phase pressure that brought us this far in the season. Elche managed to withstand the first wave, but they will crack under sustained pressure. Go do the work. Find the equalizer first, then go get the winning goal." He shifted his focus straight to Lorenzo. "Do not go chasing every single loose ball tonight. Your absolute ceiling is twenty-five minutes of heavy work. If you push beyond that, Sofía will give me grief before coming after you. Are we clear on that?"

Lorenzo nodded. "Completely clear, coach."

"Good." Martino clapped his hands once, hard. "Let us go get this done."

The players got to their feet without a sound, but the atmosphere walking down the corridor was far more purposeful.

From the first whistle of the second half, Barcelona moved with a level of urgency the opening forty-five minutes had completely lacked.

Xavi's presence altered the entire flow of the match within thirty seconds. Where Sergi Roberto had been cautious and safe, Xavi immediately started picking out sweeping diagonal passes that stretched Elche's defensive line across the pitch. Iniesta fed off that rhythm, pushing higher into the half-spaces and operating as a playmaking shadow striker just behind Lorenzo.

In the 48th minute, Xavi clipped a long ball to Alba on the left flank. Alba took it down smoothly, cut inside, and rolled a pass to Iniesta at the edge of the area. Iniesta's first-time effort was charged down by Alberto Botía for a corner.

Five minutes later, Messi drifted past two lunging challenges and curled a twenty-yard shot that Manu Herrera tipped over the bar with an acrobatic dive.

In the 58th minute, Lorenzo collected a through-ball from Xavi, used a quick turn to slip past Domingo Cisma, and drove a low shot across the goalmouth. Manu reacted quickly, getting a strong fingertip to push it wide of the post.

Elche were hanging on through sheer willpower. Fran Escribá stood at the edge of his technical area, barking commands above the roar of the crowd, waving his defenders back to keep the low block tight.

In the 63rd minute, the pressure finally told.

Neymar received the ball out wide on the left touchline, roughly thirty yards out. He drove hard at Damián Suárez, sizing up the Uruguayan fullback before cutting inside onto his right foot. Damián had anticipated the move all night, bracing his body for the cutback.

The timing on the feint was simply too sharp.

Neymar shifted his weight with a rapid step-over, carved out a pocket of daylight, and unleashed a curling strike toward the far top corner. The ball bent through the evening air, staying just beyond Manu Herrera's outstretched palm before tucking cleanly into the upper netting.

1-1.

The Barcelona bench rose to its feet in relief. Pautasso gave a firm, satisfied clap. On the pitch, Neymar sprinted toward the corner flag, dropping into a smooth knee slide as Lorenzo and Messi arrived together to haul him off the turf.

Lorenzo gave him a hearty slap on the shoulder with a grin. "Honestly, that was an incredible strike."

Neymar caught his breath with a wide smile. "It was about time, man. Now let us go finish the job and find the winner."

The following twenty minutes turned into a frantic, open contest. Elche threw counter-attacks forward, believing they could still snatch a famous home victory, while Barcelona piled men into the attacking third.

Garry Rodrigues forced a flying save from Valdés in the 71st minute. Moments later, Coro saw his header from a set piece cleared right off the goal line by Bartra. On the counter, Iniesta clattered a long-range drive off the base of the upright, and Messi saw a close-range effort smothered by Manu Herrera's legs.

The match entered the 84th minute with the scoreline deadlocked.

Then the breakthrough arrived.

Xavi received a square ball from Busquets inside the center circle and lifted his head. Messi made a sharp diagonal dart between Elche's central pairing, moving toward the ball to drag the markers with him. Xavi delivered a chipped pass over the defensive line into the exact space Messi was attacking.

Messi took the dropping ball down on the run using his left instep. Cisma closed in from behind while Lombán scrambled across from the right. Messi glanced up, spotted the opening near the six-yard box, and made his choice.

He slipped a delicate, weighted pass between the two center-backs.

Lorenzo had already begun his acceleration. He timed his sprint behind Cisma, getting a step on the defense before the pass was even played. He arrived at maximum stride, beating a lunging slide from Botía while Manu rushed off his goal line.

The ball rolled a yard inside the six-yard box. Botía threw his entire frame forward, extending his leg in a desperate bid to hook the ball away.

Lorenzo stretched his right foot forward.

He needed only a touch. His toe got to the leather a split second before the defender could make contact, nudging the ball past the onrushing keeper and sending it rolling softly over the goal line into the empty net.

Fweet—!

1-2.

The home supporters went completely silent, while the travelling pocket of Catalan fans celebrated wildly in the upper tier.

Lorenzo skipped any elaborate celebration. He turned around and pointed directly at Messi, who broke into a smile and pointed right back. It was the simple, shared understanding of two forwards who had created that exact goal dozens of times on the training pitch.

"He got there by a fraction of an inch," Santiago said over the broadcast microphone. "Botía was sliding in with everything he had, but Lorenzo simply anticipated the flight and reached it first. That is the predatory instinct that separates good forwards from elite ones."

Inés added, "That marks Messi's 12th assist of the campaign to Lorenzo. Every single one of those chances has found the back of the net."

The closing five minutes were tense, but Barcelona managed the game well. Elche pumped long balls into the area, yet Valdés commanded his six-yard box comfortably. Deep into stoppage time, Iniesta carried possession toward the corner flag, shielding the ball until the final whistle sounded across the ground.

Full time: Elche 1, Barcelona 2.

34 matches unbeaten.

The Barcelona squad walked off the pitch to polite applause from the away end. There was no wild celebrating. It was a gritty, demanding away victory that had tested their resolve.

Sofía was waiting just inside the mouth of the tunnel with her tablet in hand.

Her expression was entirely unimpressed. "You were out there for nearly thirty-five minutes of high-intensity play."

Lorenzo reached for a towel, raising an eyebrow with a dry smile. "Come on, it really felt closer to twenty-five."

"It was thirty-four minutes and twenty seconds, Lorenzo," she replied smoothly, tapping the screen. "The performance monitors measure exact movement on the pitch."

"Well, we really needed to lock down the three points out there."

"You secured the victory, sure, but your hamstring could have done without those extra ten minutes of sprinting," Sofía countered, keeping her tone firm. "I am logging this into your report, and I will be reminding Tata that running you past the recommended cap creates unnecessary risk."

Lorenzo let out a soft laugh. "Wait, are you actually going to complain directly to the board?"

"I have direct access to anyone who needs to hear about player health," Sofía said, resting the device against her arm. "Now get into the ice bath, use the compression sleeves, take your post-match protein, and get a solid nine hours of sleep. If you skip any part of that routine, the sensors will show it tomorrow."

She turned and headed down the corridor toward the medical room.

Piqué, who had been leaning against the wall watching the entire exchange with a grin, strolled over to Lorenzo's locker.

"Did she really just threaten to take that up with management?" Piqué asked, chuckling.

"Yeah, pretty much."

"And she actually has the direct lines?"

"Apparently. At least, she claims she does."

Piqué let out an appreciative whistle. "Honestly, I kind of like her approach."

"Yeah, that's because you're not the one she's torturing with the metrics," Lorenzo replied, shaking his head with a laugh as he unlaced his boots, feeling the tension from a grueling match finally fade away.
