Chapter 247 - For the Sake of the Village

Danzō's declaration rang with righteousness.

The mood in the chamber shifted again.

He had been clever.

He did not deny responsibility.

He reframed it.

He downplayed the consequences and amplified his intention.

To those who did not see deeper, he no longer appeared reckless—only resolute. Perhaps radical. But not malicious.

Hiruzen, however, saw straight through it.

In matters of public perception, Danzō had always been one step behind him.

"Elder Shimura," Hiruzen cut in sharply, "do not evade the point."

"I am not questioning your motive for initiating war."

"I am asking whether you acknowledge that your decisions directly resulted in the scale of loss our village suffered."

The question landed like a blade.

Danzō's previous rhetoric dissolved instantly.

"I do not acknowledge that."

His voice hardened.

"Sarutobi jōnin, perhaps you have spent too long inside the village."

"On the battlefield, circumstances shift by the breath. Anything can happen."

"Yes, I redeployed five hundred border guards. I admit that."

"But I will not accept that I caused the collapse of the entire defensive line."

He leaned forward.

"After those five hundred were withdrawn, Iwagakure sent five thousand shinobi."

"Sunagakure followed with four thousand more."

"What does that tell you?"

"Mobilizing thousands takes preparation. Gathering near our borders without detection takes planning."

"They were prepared long before I moved a single unit."

His voice rose slightly.

"My withdrawal gave them an opening."

"But do you believe ten thousand enemy troops would have abandoned their campaign because five hundred guards remained in place?"

"Impossible."

"They had already targeted Konoha."

"Even without my intervention, war would have come."

"If I had not forced the timing, who knows what greater disaster might have struck us later?"

"You may accuse me of miscalculation."

"But you will not hang the entire war around my neck."

It was a solid defense.

And the crucial fact remained:

Iwagakure and Sunagakure had indeed amassed forces in advance.

No one in this room could prove otherwise.

Konoha could not interrogate foreign villages for truth.

Even if they answered, would anyone believe them?

By anchoring his defense to that uncertainty—

Danzō had regained ground.

Hiruzen's expression darkened.

He had not expected Danzō to pivot so quickly.

Around the room, several jōnin visibly softened in their judgment.

If the enemy had prepared beforehand, then perhaps the war's origin was no longer so clear-cut.

Danzō pressed forward.

"I have explained everything."

He fixed his gaze on Hiruzen.

"Do you have further objections?"

"If not, may I proceed with my candidacy?"

"Still no."

Hiruzen's eyes sharpened.

"For the matter of Kikyo Fortress, I have no further questions—for now."

"But I have another matter."

He would not stop.

Not today.

If you fail to kill the snake, it will bite you in return.

Hiruzen had entered this meeting determined to end Danzō decisively.

Kikyo Fortress was only his primary strike.

He had prepared contingencies.

Backup plans.

But—

His gaze flickered briefly toward Orochimaru.

A flicker of guilt passed unseen by most.

The contingency would implicate Orochimaru—his own student.

He did not wish to use it.

But Orochimaru's entanglement with Danzō ran too deep.

For the sake of the village—

Sacrifice would be necessary.

Danzō sensed the shift.

A chill ran through him.

"Sarutobi jōnin, do not push your luck."

"You have questioned me repeatedly. What exactly are you implying?"

"Do not forget—"

"You may have doubts about me."

"But I have doubts about you as well."

His eye gleamed dangerously.

Danzō was not spotless.

But neither was Hiruzen.

He knew things.

Things capable of tearing down the carefully curated image of the Third Hokage.

If Hiruzen forced his hand—

Then they would burn together.

Hiruzen did not flinch.

"Yes, I have made mistakes."

"My greatest mistake…"

He paused.

"…was indulging someone too much."

"In the past, I tolerated it for the sake of stability."

"But I am no longer Hokage."

"It is time to mend what I allowed to rot."

Danzō's expression changed.

His mind raced.

Memories flashed—

Years of tacit approvals.

Silent permissions.

Private scoldings after public silence.

He had acted in the shadows.

Hiruzen had stood in the light.

When Danzō became stained—

Hiruzen remained clean.

Back then, Danzō had accepted that arrangement.

He was the root beneath the soil.

Hiruzen was the leaf in sunlight.

But now—

That balance was lethal.

Danzō might expose many deeds.

But he lacked evidence tying Hiruzen directly.

Hiruzen, on the other hand, needed only one narrative:

"I tolerated him too long."

And every stain would become Danzō's alone.

For the first time in this confrontation—

Shimura Danzō realized something chilling.

He might have been the blade.

But Sarutobi Hiruzen had always held the handle.
