On the first day the actors arrived on Director Finlay's set, there was no filming yet. The purpose of bringing everyone together so early was to allow the cast to become familiar with one another, discuss the script and, most importantly, understand the characters they would be portraying. Director Finlay was not the sort of director who believed actors should simply arrive on set, memorise their lines and wait for someone to tell them what to do. He wanted them to understand the people they were playing, because in his opinion, an actor could follow every line in the script perfectly and still give a lifeless performance if they did not understand what existed behind those lines.
