Chapter 20 - Blood on Both Roads

Tobirama's World-The Night Konoha Forgot

The moment Tobirama gave the order, the Senju strike force moved.

They didn't shout. They didn't hesitate.

They struck like a blade dropping from the dark.

Inside the Sarutobi compound, celebration still filled the air—laughter, drinks, careless boasts. No one had even considered the possibility of an attack.

This was Konoha, the strongest village in the world.

Who would dare assassinate a clan under the Hokage's protection?

And yet—

Shadows landed in their courtyard.

Steel flashed.

Blood followed.

"W-Who are you?!"

"We didn't invite you!"

"Is this some kind of mission—?"

Their confusion lasted only an instant.

Slash.

Slash.

Bodies fell before screams fully formed.

The Sarutobi clan finally understood what was happening.

"Enemy attack!"

"Sound the alarm!"

"Call the Second Hokage!"

Someone even shouted, frantic and furious, "Where are the Uchiha Police?! How did enemies get into Konoha?!"

But it wasn't an outside enemy.

It was Konoha itself.

Many Sarutobi were drunk. Slow. Unprepared.

And the ones killing them were not random ANBU—

They were Senju elite, moving with cold precision.

It wasn't a battle.

It was an execution.

Within minutes, the courtyard became a slaughterhouse.

After several clean sweeps, not one Sarutobi remained alive.

The compound fell silent.

Outside, Senju shinobi maintaining the barrier exchanged a glance and nodded toward Tobirama.

Tobirama returned the nod.

His expression did not change.

The man who would one day let the Senju bleed dry in another timeline…

would not be permitted to exist in this one.

When the cleanup was complete, Tobirama led the same force onward.

Next target:

The Shimura clan.

And what awaited them there was no different from what had happened to the Sarutobi.

The Alliance Road — A Hokage Hat, A Crumbling Team

Far from Konoha, on the route toward the Land of Lightning, Sarutobi Hiruzen drove the expedition forward with near-mania.

"Faster!"

"We sign the agreement and return immediately!"

No one rested properly. Ration pills replaced sleep. The team pushed through fatigue because Hiruzen's eyes were locked on one image:

Returning to Konoha.

Standing in the Hokage Tower.

Making the title real.

But Shimura Danzō finally snapped.

"Hiruzen—this pace is insane."

"We need rest."

"The squad is exhausted."

Hiruzen's mouth tightened. He looked at Danzō as if he were a stain on the mission.

"Did you forget what Sensei told us?"

"This alliance is Konoha's sincerity."

"If we're late in front of the Second Raikage, what do you think that says about us?"

Danzō didn't care.

Hiruzen heard the truth beneath the complaint: jealousy.

That hat should be his.

And the harder Hiruzen pushed, the more Danzō wanted him to fail.

Danzō stopped walking.

"You and your Sarutobi can keep running," he said coldly. "The Shimura are resting."

The Shimura shinobi behind him halted too, following their leader's lead.

Hiruzen's face tightened.

He could feel the Sarutobi behind him watching, waiting to see whether their "new Hokage" would fold.

Anger rose fast.

"Danzō," Hiruzen said, voice hardening, "what do you think you're doing?"

"I am the leader of this unit."

"And I am the Third Hokage—appointed by the Second Hokage himself."

His eyes sharpened.

"If you're unhappy, you can complain after the mission."

"But right now—"

He stepped forward.

"As Third Hokage, I order you to move."

Danzō stared back, resentment burning in his eyes.

For a long moment, it looked like he might refuse outright.

Then he swallowed it.

His pride bowed before authority—barely.

The Shimura moved again.

Hiruzen's face remained blank, but inside, something had shifted.

Friendship meant less than the hat.

The Empty Ceremony

They arrived ahead of schedule.

And found… nothing.

The site had been prepared for a signing ceremony: banners, platforms, arranged seating.

But no hosts.

No Second Raikage.

No delegation.

Just silence.

Hiruzen's unease spiked.

Danzō's hand drifted toward his weapon.

"Hiruzen," Danzō muttered, "something's wrong."

"I know," Hiruzen replied, already signaling the unit into alert formation.

A heartbeat later—

figures appeared at the edges of the clearing, fast and confident, surrounding them in a widening circle.

A voice laughed.

"Tch. I thought the Second Hokage would be the one coming."

Another voice answered, amused.

"Look at that kid—he's wearing the Hokage hat. Must be the new Hokage."

Two men stepped forward.

Their presence alone felt like trouble.

Kinkaku and Ginkaku. The infamous brothers of Kumogakure.

With them came elite Cloud shinobi—battle-hardened, ready, and smiling like predators.

Hiruzen's instincts screamed.

These two are madmen.

Still, he forced the formal tone.

"I am Sarutobi Hiruzen, Third Hokage of Konoha."

"We came for the alliance ceremony."

"Where is the Second Raikage?"

The brothers exchanged a look and grinned.

"Alliance?"

"Are you joking?"

Then Kinkaku's smile sharpened.

"As for the Second Raikage…"

Ginkaku leaned in, voice dripping with mockery.

"We'll send you to meet him."

Before Hiruzen could say another word, the Cloud unit surged.

Steel and jutsu collided.

Kinkaku and Ginkaku drove straight for Hiruzen and Danzō.

And in the space of one breath—

the "alliance ceremony" became a battlefield.
