Chapter 2 - The Field of Vultures

"Don't you think we are doing too much?" Harris asked as he watched the scene unfolding in front of him. He was the Beta, and even he felt a flicker of unease as he looked at Alpha Zion. Zion didn't stop, his face was twisted into a mask of pure disgust and annoyance while he and the others continued to stomp on Eren with everything they had. Zion looked up for a moment, his eyes cold and unforgiving. "What is enough? This is nothing. I am the Alpha of this city and the Alpha of this academy. I am the son of the President. As an Alpha, if I command anyone to die, regardless of their rank or if they are just a lowly Omega, they die. So keep going, go ahead and stomp on him."

Harris hesitated, looking down at the broken boy on the grass. "But Alpha, did you actually confirm he did it?" Zion didn't even blink as he delivered another blow. "I don't care if he did it or not, the fact is my mate was harassed," Zion snapped. "The moment he touched my mate, his death sentence was signed. How would an Omega even dare to lay a finger on her? Just because he is assigned to Elite X, he thinks he is one of us. He is nothing but a filthy little brat." Zion turned to the rest of the pack members standing around. "All of you, step on him. If I see anyone holding back, I will personally make sure I remove your head. Do you understand?" A chorus of "Yes" rang out through the field.

The group closed in, their boots hitting Eren's body repeatedly until blood began to gush from his mouth and stain the grass. Eventually, Zion raised his hand to signal a stop. He looked down at the motionless body with a look of total indifference. "Just like I said, I don't think he is going to survive this. We will leave him here to rot in the field and let the vultures finish what we started." Without another word, Alpha Zion turned and walked away, leaving his pack behind.

Harris stood there with the others, staring at Eren where he lay crumpled on the floor. Eren's eyes were barely open, his eyelids fluttering as he drifted in and out of consciousness. He couldn't see the faces of the people surrounding him, but the voices of Harris and Zion were etched into his mind. He didn't know which specific pack members had delivered the hardest hits, but the pain told him they hadn't held back. Harris finally broke the silence. "Enough. The Alpha said he won't survive anyway. Let's just leave him to die by himself. We need to get back to the academy because we have a lot to do, we need to practice our powers, our vision, and our strength." The others nodded in agreement and followed Harris back toward the main buildings of Audrex Academy.

Eren remained on the ground, trying to move his limbs, but his body refused to respond. Every inch of him was filled with sharp aches and stabbing pains that made his head throb with every heartbeat. He forced his eyes open, but all he could see was the harsh sun beating down on him and the silhouettes of vultures circling in the sky. He couldn't even lift his hands to shield his face from the heat. He managed to look around and realized he was in the dead center of the field. This was a place no one visited unless they were ordered to, and even then, the field was so massive that Omegas usually turned back before reaching the middle. Omegas didn't have the speed or strength of the higher ranks, and they certainly couldn't heal themselves, so Eren knew his hope was gone. The only people who came here were other Omegas at eleven or twelve at night to eat in secret, and by then, it would be far too late for him. More blood spilled from his mouth as a coughing fit seized his chest. "What happened to me?" Eren thought to himself. "How did it end up like this? After everything I did to avoid these people, I'm still going to die like this, poor and alone. I didn't even get to fuck anyone."

The events that led to this moment had started earlier that day. Coordinator Ru, the man in charge of the Omegas, had called Eren and his stepsister Lala over. "Come here and deliver these clothes to the Elite X," Ru commanded. Lala looked at the clothes and then back at the man with a worried expression. "It's daytime," she reminded him. "We aren't allowed to step into the West Wing where the Elite X Academy is during the day." Ru shook his head impatiently. "It is a command from them, the elite group specifically asked for these clothes to be brought to them now, so you have to go."

Lala stepped forward, trying to protect her brother. "You cannot allow Eren to go there, those people are dangerous." Ru sighed, looking at them both. "Stop acting like children. You both go to the same academy and you need to take this seriously so that during the next ranking test, you might actually be promoted. There is no real difference between you and them, except they are from the rich side and you are from the poor wing. Now take these clothes to their game house." Lala reached for the bundle, her voice trembling slightly. "I will deliver it myself. I know Eren is technically assigned as their slave, but I have a weird feeling today and I don't want my brother getting into trouble."

Ru didn't care about her feelings. "You are both servants, so do whatever you want. If you don't want to deliver it, that's on you." He turned and walked out of their small hut. Lala turned to Eren, her face full of concern. "Eren, don't worry about it, I'm going to take these to the Elites." Eren stood up, shaking his head. "No, you know how dangerous that is for you. I'll go. I've been going there for a while now and I'm the one they expect. It's just a delivery, what could go wrong?"
