Outside Konoha's main headquarters, just as Utatane Koharu and Mitokado Homura stepped out of the camp entrance, they ran into the four newly arrived captains and their subordinates.
"Elder Koharu, Elder Homura."
The four stepped forward and bowed.
"You've come at just the right time."
Koharu looked first at Minato and smiled faintly.
"Minato, you've had it rough. You only just returned to the village, and now you've had to come back again."
Minato bowed slightly.
"You flatter me, Elder. It's merely my duty."
Koharu nodded, then shifted her gaze to Shinichi.
The smile on her usually stern face became noticeably gentler, though her eyes carried a complicated mix of emotions—relief, lingering fear, and heartfelt admiration.
Without realizing it, she softened her tone.
"Shinichi, I've heard all about what you did in the Land of Lightning. You performed exceptionally well—truly outstanding."
"However, next time, make sure to give more consideration to your own safety. You're still young, and you have a long road ahead of you. Some burdens don't always have to be carried alone."
Homura smiled and added from the side, "Shinichi, you have no idea. After Koharu heard about what you did in the Land of Lightning, she barely slept for days. It wasn't until she received confirmation that your entire team had returned safely that she finally relaxed."
Koharu shot her old friend a glare but didn't deny it.
Looking back at Shinichi, she continued, "In any case, seeing you standing here safe and sound finally puts my mind at ease."
The unexpectedly warm scene caused both Hiashi and Fugaku to react subtly. The two exchanged a discreet glance.
For a council elder famous for her strictness to reveal such emotions was genuinely surprising.
Faced with the undisguised concern of the two advisors, Shinichi remained calm and respectfully replied, "Yes. I've caused both Elders to worry."
Koharu nodded before her expression turned serious again. She turned toward Fugaku and Hiashi, returning to her usual efficient demeanor.
"Clan Head Fugaku, Clan Head Hiashi, you've both traveled a long way."
"The Uchiha and Hyūga are among Konoha's greatest clans. Their strength will be crucial in the coming war. We'll be relying heavily on both of you."
"You honor us, Elder. The Hyūga will spare no effort."
"The Uchiha are equally bound by duty."
The two clan heads bowed solemnly at the same time.
"Good!"
Seeing their response, Koharu wasted no more words. Turning around, she headed deeper into the camp.
"The situation is urgent, so let's skip the pleasantries. Everyone, follow me to headquarters. We'll discuss the details inside."
A short while later, inside the command center.
Several staff officers quickly distributed important documents to the four captains. Meanwhile, Commander-in-Chief Utatane Koharu walked over to the massive map and began outlining the current situation.
At present, nearly all of the key ports and transportation hubs throughout the Land of Waves and its surrounding waters had fallen under Kirigakure's control.
This meant that Kirigakure's initial strategy of using the Land of Waves as a forward staging ground had already succeeded.
Konoha had not been blind to these developments. The problem was that it simply lacked the manpower to deal with them.
Its main forces were tied down on both the southwestern and northeastern fronts. The northeastern battlefield in particular had faced the overwhelming advance of Kumogakure's army, forcing Konoha to commit the majority of its available combat strength there.
As a result, coastal defenses in the southeast had remained chronically understaffed.
Even knowing that Kirigakure was advancing its plans step by step, Konoha could only dispatch small units to harass and delay them. It never had enough troops available to crush their intentions outright.
Kirigakure, meanwhile, had seemed in no hurry to launch a full-scale offensive.
Instead, it maintained constant pressure, forcing Konoha to keep allocating troops to the southeastern theater. Their apparent goal was to wait until Konoha and Kumogakure exhausted one another on the northeastern battlefield before striking at the perfect moment and reaping all the benefits.
However, events had not unfolded as Kirigakure expected.
Rather than becoming trapped in a prolonged stalemate or suffering catastrophic losses, Konoha had ended the northeastern campaign with Kumogakure's crushing defeat.
Not only had Konoha held the line, but the victory had also dramatically boosted morale, allowing elite forces to be redeployed from the northeast.
This unexpected development had clearly disrupted Kirigakure's plans.
Over the past month and more, their pace of operations had noticeably accelerated.
They were no longer satisfied with simple occupation. Instead, they had begun focusing on establishing permanent forward bases and constructing comprehensive supply networks.
All signs indicated that Kirigakure was making intensive final preparations for a large-scale amphibious invasion.
"Everyone, what are your thoughts?"
After finishing the briefing, Koharu swept her gaze across the room before ultimately stopping on the youngest person present—Shinichi.
Almost simultaneously, Homura's eyes turned in the same direction.
It wasn't just the two elders.
After brief contemplation, Minato, Fugaku, and Hiashi all directed their attention toward Shinichi as well.
After all, the young man before them was the genius strategist who had accurately predicted the strategic movements of every major faction before the war had even begun.
And his performance on both the southwestern and northeastern battlefields—especially the textbook lightning campaign that struck deep into the Land of Lightning and devastated Kumogakure's logistics network—had proven that he possessed not only top-tier strategic insight, but also exceptional tactical skill and command ability.
Faced with everyone's attention, Shinichi pondered for a moment. His gaze fell upon various points on the map as he rapidly assessed the strengths and weaknesses of both sides, along with the possible directions the battle might take.
Then he asked, "Elder Koharu, has our reconnaissance division recently identified any core nodes in Kirigakure's logistics network, or any of their primary shipping routes?"
Everyone nodded upon hearing the question.
Kirigakure was conducting an overseas expedition. Although its forward bases had already taken shape after securing the Land of Waves, its long supply lines were its lifeline.
If Konoha could destroy one of Kirigakure's key supply hubs deep within the Land of Waves or on one of the surrounding islands, then even the largest offensive would become unsustainable. It might even force Kirigakure to withdraw without a fight.
Without a doubt, it was the most appealing way to break the current stalemate.
Koharu shook her head, her expression grave.
"No. Our infiltration and reconnaissance efforts have encountered significant resistance. Perhaps because Kumogakure suffered such devastating losses in logistics, Kirigakure has become extremely cautious. Their supply depots are very well concealed, and their maritime transport routes are constantly changing. The reconnaissance teams we've dispatched still haven't managed to identify the true arteries of their logistics network."
"I see..."
Shinichi nodded, seemingly unsurprised by the answer.
He rose and walked over to the map, his fingertip lightly tracing the Land of Fire's long coastline.
"In that case, until we identify weaknesses in their supply chain or discover another opportunity, we'll probably have to focus on defense during the initial phase."
"Defense?"
One of the staff officers couldn't help speaking up.
"Captain Shinichi, the Land of Fire's coastline is enormous. There are countless beaches, river mouths, and harbors suitable for large-scale landings. If we divide our forces to defend them all, our troops will be stretched to the breaking point. There'll be gaps everywhere. The pressure would be overwhelming. How exactly are we supposed to defend it?"
"And that's precisely the key."
As Shinichi's finger slowly moved along the coastline, he explained, "Our forces are already smaller than Kirigakure's. That means we cannot—and should not—attempt to defend every inch of shoreline. That would be a bottomless pit. In the end, we'd simply be dancing to the enemy's tune, exhausting ourselves across an overly extended front until they concentrate their strength and break through at a single point."
"So what we need isn't static defense."
"It's elastic defense."
"Elastic defense?"
The unfamiliar term caught everyone off guard, and thoughtful expressions appeared around the room.
"That's right."
Shinichi turned around to face them.
"Unlike the positional warfare we fought against Sunagakure and Kumogakure, the southeastern coastal theater has its own unique characteristics. Kirigakure is crossing the sea to attack us, which gives them the initiative. They're facing our vast coastline."
"At the same time, the sea provides both a natural barrier and tremendous room for maneuver. Their assembly points, feints, and troop movements are difficult to track completely. But while that's an advantage for them, it's also a constraint."
"In theory, Kirigakure can dispatch small elite teams to infiltrate, scout, or conduct raiding landings at virtually any point along our coastline."
"But note that this only applies to small-scale operations."
"If they want to launch a large-scale corps-level amphibious assault capable of tearing through our defenses, pushing deep inland, and ultimately achieving strategic objectives..."
"...then their choice of landing sites becomes severely limited."
"Because such an operation requires a stable, efficient, large-scale logistical support system located close to the landing zone."
"That's not something a few boats or temporary camps can provide."
At this point, Shinichi pointed once more to the Land of Waves and the surrounding islands under Kirigakure's control.
"The Land of Waves, along with the handful of nearby islands they control that possess the necessary infrastructure, are their only reliable forward bases and staging grounds."
"The launch points for any major amphibious invasion, as well as the primary flow of their logistical support, must revolve around these core locations."
"Based on my assessment, aside from the coastal city where we're currently stationed, the likely targets are limited to these areas..."
He tapped several locations on the map.
The others followed his finger and considered the possibilities for a moment before nodding in agreement.
"And that's where elastic defense comes in."
"The core principle is to abandon the fantasy of defending the entire coastline. We acknowledge our disadvantage in overall manpower during the early stages."
"We then withdraw the majority of our mobile forces and defensive focus from the vast coastline and concentrate them in the handful of key regions most likely to face the enemy's main assault."
"In summary, it comes down to four principles—forward warning, defense in depth, mobile reserves, and concentrated counterattacks."
Shinichi calmly laid out the strategic framework he had developed.
As he spoke, the eyes of everyone present grew brighter and brighter.
Koharu and Homura, in particular, even began smiling slightly, as though his proposal reminded them of some interesting memory from the past.
"This elastic defense strategy is, at its core, an exchange of space for time, precise intelligence for local superiority, and reactive mobility for the initiative to counterattack."
"We acknowledge that we cannot contest Kirigakure everywhere in the early stages."
"But through rigorous early-warning systems and highly efficient mobility, we can drag them into battlefields of our own choosing and negate the initiative they gain from being the attacker."
"The ultimate objective is to create favorable conditions for ourselves and, through one or several decisive counteroffensives, delay Kirigakure's strategic timetable while buying time to uncover the true backbone of their logistics network—or discover other strategic opportunities."
The command center fell silent.
Everyone was digesting the defensive doctrine Shinichi had just presented.
Before long, their gazes drifted back to the map almost instinctively. Recalling his explanation, they could practically envision scenes of advancing and retreating forces, rapid maneuver warfare, and mobile encirclement operations unfolding before their eyes.
The concept of elastic defense was not entirely unheard of in the ninja world.
After all, the innate mobility of shinobi often made static defense less than ideal. Throughout history, there had been countless examples of forces exploiting mobility and flexibility to concentrate strength against vulnerable enemy positions.
However, no one had ever done what Shinichi had just done.
He had taken those scattered experiences and refined them into a systematic doctrine with clearly defined layers and interlocking components. From early warning and defensive deployment to mobile reserves and counterattacks, every step had been given a precise role and supporting rationale.
A top-tier strategist indeed.
That thought surfaced simultaneously in everyone's mind.
Koharu and Homura exchanged a glance, each immediately understanding what the other was thinking.
"A remarkably elegant concept."
Koharu spoke slowly, her sharp gaze sweeping across the room.
"Then, using Shinichi's elastic defense framework as our foundation, we'll proceed to formulate the detailed deployment zones for each unit, early-warning protocols, maneuver routes, and fortification plans for our designated battlefields."
"Time is not on our side. We must complete our defensive network before Kirigakure finishes its final preparations."
At the end, she looked toward Shinichi and smiled faintly.
"Oh, and Shinichi. After the meeting, I want you to organize the elastic defense doctrine you explained today into a complete tactical guidance document, tailored specifically to the conditions of the southeastern theater."
"Once it's finished, submit it to me. I'll distribute it to the middle- and lower-ranking officers throughout the army so they can thoroughly study, understand, and implement this tactical philosophy."
"Understood, Elder Koharu."
Shinichi calmly accepted the assignment.
And just like that, Konoha's overall strategic defensive doctrine against Kirigakure's offensive was formally established during that meeting.
Afterward, the entire Southeastern Army began operating at full speed around that strategic framework.
Meanwhile, far away in Sekikōjō, in the Land of Iron.
Outside the Ashina Dōjō.
"Sensei, may fortune favor your blade!"
Yamagami Motoya bowed deeply.
As Isshin's earliest disciple, he possessed an upright and steadfast personality and held the deepest respect for both his master's swordsmanship and character.
Compared to two years ago, his frame had become much broader, while his temperament had grown sharper and more restrained.
"Sensei, when you reach the capital, make sure those stubborn old fools get a proper taste of what the Ashina Style can do!"
That was Yagyū Chūgi.
Compared to when he had first joined the dōjō, he had grown even larger, now standing well over 2.3 meters tall—a veritable giant.
"Sensei, have a safe journey. Please take good care of yourself."
The Uzumaki couple spoke together.
Not long after Isshin had rescued them through a fortunate twist of fate, both had become his disciples.
Dōsuke primarily studied medicine under Isshin.
The deeper he delved into his master's teachings, the more shocked he became to discover that Isshin's accomplishments in medicine were every bit as profound as his swordsmanship. He was a true master in the field, and Dōsuke's admiration only deepened, driving him to study even harder.
Kichō, meanwhile, had undergone a subtle transformation from the gentle image she once projected.
Ever since surviving that brush with death, something deep within her had awakened—much like the daughter she would one day have. A core of resilience, and even sharpness, had emerged from within.
Her dedication to swordsmanship training under Isshin was so intense that even her three male fellow disciples found it astonishing.
Nor was that all.
She had also devoted herself to mastering a variety of concealed weapons, including shuriken, kunai, and senbon.
Combining those skills with her naturally extraordinary sensory abilities, exceptional chakra control, and the unique methods of force generation she had learned from Isshin, she had developed a combat style entirely her own.
Swift.
Concealed.
Precise.
Like the silent dance of a butterfly, capable of unleashing deadly brilliance in a single instant.
Over this period, she had earned a considerable reputation throughout Sekikōjō and the surrounding region.
People had begun calling her the Phantom Butterfly.
"That's enough."
Isshin waved a hand, cutting off any further farewells from his disciples.
Then he turned and strode toward the gate as casually as if he were merely heading out for an ordinary walk.
"Let's go, Chairman."
After stepping outside, Isshin smiled and addressed the man who had apparently been waiting there for quite some time—Yagyū Sōichirō.
"Hmph!"
Sōichirō snorted.
"You'd better rein yourself in during this tournament! Stop acting so outrageously unconventional! Do you hear me? This is the National Swordsmanship Tournament!"
"Yeah, yeah, I know."
Isshin replied in a perfunctory tone.
Before Sōichirō could react, he had already taken the lead and strode forward at a brisk pace.
"Then let's be off!"
"To the capital!"
It turned out that their destination was Kyoto, the capital of the Land of Iron, where the National Swordsmanship Tournament would be held one month later.
As he walked, countless thoughts continued racing through Isshin's mind.
