The road north of the Mahi River
The column left the war camp before the sun had reached its highest point, though the camp itself still carried the marks of the attack that had nearly stopped their journey before it had properly begun. The fires had been put out, the dead had been covered and carried away for burial, and the wounded who were strong enough to travel had been placed upon carts that moved slowly at the rear of the column. Those who could still ride had been given horses, though several of them had to be supported by their companions whenever the road became uneven. Harigupta had spent the better part of the morning making certain that nothing had been forgotten.
