Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: Rem, My Second Wife

The Roswaal Mansion.

The morning sunlight filtered through the massive floor-to-ceiling windows, spilling into the room.

"Hmm... a strange ceiling."

Natsuki Subaru slowly opened his eyes. What met his gaze was a vast ceiling, with hanging crystals emitting a faint glow that illuminated the entire room.

Sitting up, Subaru looked around. He was sitting on a massive bed—one large enough to comfortably accommodate five people with room to spare. In this room, which was nearly 350 square feet, there was almost nothing else besides this exaggeratedly large bed.

"As I thought, yesterday wasn't a dream... I really have crossed over into the world of Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World."

Subaru slapped his forehead, sighing inwardly.

That's right—Natsuki Subaru was a transmigrator. More accurately, he was a "double-transmigrator."

Originally, he was an ordinary youth from Earth who mysteriously transmigrated into Natsuki Subaru's body, becoming the character himself. It wasn't until he crossed over again into this fantasy world yesterday that he finally recalled his original dual identity.

"To sum it up, my current identity is both the protagonist of the story and a transmigrator," Subaru thought.

Much like a certain double-agent, he possessed a dual identity.

"Anyway, yesterday should count as a Perfect Clear."

Recalling the events of the previous day, a satisfied smile played on Subaru's lips.

Armed with his foreknowledge of the plot, he had successfully encountered Emilia and assisted her in retrieving her stolen insignia. Of course, many things happened in between—like being cornered by those three thugs in the alleyway before Emilia came to his rescue.

He had also helped the fruit vendor find his lost daughter, later summoned the Sword Saint, Reinhard van Astrea, to save the day, and fought alongside Emilia's group against the Bowel Hunter, Elsa Granhiert. Finally, Felt and Old Man Rom were taken to the Royal Capital by Reinhard.

In short, compared to the original Natsuki Subaru, his experiences were almost identical. However, there was one major difference: he had cleared it on a "Single Life" run without taking a single hit.

He wasn't certain if he possessed the "Return by Death" ability like the original Subaru. If the Witch of Envy hadn't bestowed that power upon him, dying would mean the end. With only one life, he didn't dare gamble.

"After all, people die when they are killed!" Subaru reflected.

Therefore, in this world, he had to act with extreme caution and avoid any situation that could potentially lead to danger.

That said, given his familiarity with the plot of Re:Zero, even without Return by Death, he was confident he could live well. He wasn't the clueless Subaru from the original story; he knew the direction of every key event and how to use that information to maximize his own benefits.

"First, I've safely survived the first day. Next up is..."

Just as Subaru was pondering his next move, his thoughts were interrupted by a slight noise. He looked up to see the door slowly opening, revealing two beautiful figures.

"It is nearly seven o'clock of the Solar Day, guest." "It is already seven o'clock of the Solar Day, guest."

Their voices politely informed him of the time.

Solar Day, seven o'clock... I don't know the exact system, but I assume it means 7:00 AM, Subaru thought. But are these two human recorders? Why is their speech so synchronized?

Subaru muttered to himself as he looked at the pair. Standing side-by-side were two girls, identical twins. They stood at a medium height of 150 centimeters, with large eyes and peach-pink lips. Their soft facial contours combined innocence with cuteness, creating a look that naturally evoked a desire to protect them.

Both wore short bob cuts, but their hair was parted in opposite directions—one covering the left eye and the other covering the right. Aside from the parting, they were distinguished by their hair colors: one pink, one blue.

Indeed, they were Ram and Rem, the twin sisters of the Oni clan.

Having known their identities long ago, Subaru wasn't the least bit surprised. He calmly replied, "I could have gotten up on my own... but thank you for coming to wake me."

It was worth noting that Ram and Rem were dressed in black-based apron dresses with white hair ornaments. These specially modified maid outfits, with their exposed slender shoulders and short skirts, perfectly accentuated their curves to a provocative degree.

Even Subaru, who wasn't an expert on maid uniforms, could tell this design reflected the "refined" tastes of an old gentleman. Specifically, the large cutout sections over the chest allowed glimpses of snowy-white skin, making it hard for Subaru not to steal a few extra glances.

Is it just me, or do Rem's breasts look a bit larger than Ram's? At this rate, my future children won't go hungry. After all, Rem is my 'second wife' in the original story...

"This is bad, Sister. Just now, the guest was subjecting Sister to lewd humiliation within his mind." "This is terrible, Rem. Just now, the guest was forcing Rem to accept the limits of disgrace within his mind." "Please spare us, guest. Please let Rem go and just violate Sister instead." "Stop it, guest. Let Ram escape and just humiliate Rem instead."

Perhaps sensing Subaru's straying gaze, the two maids looked stricken with horror. They let go of each other's hands only to clasp them back together in a protective gesture.

Re:Zero :I, Subaru, the Shadow Monarch? (32 Chapters, Ongoing)

------------------------------------------------

"Ahem..." Subaru cleared his throat, feigning composure. With a straight face, he said, "Don't talk nonsense! I didn't do anything. I was simply admiring your maid uniforms."

"Guest, your eyes didn't look like they were 'simply' admiring," Ram snorted softly.

"Indeed. The guest's gaze was quite... heated," Rem added, her expressionless face carrying a hint of faint mockery.

"Don't falsely accuse me! I'm a very upright person. Why would I have improper thoughts about you? This is pure slander!" Subaru puffed out his chest, acting as if he had the moral high ground.

While he did have some improper thoughts, he would never admit it.

"Guest, your words carry very little conviction." "Indeed. The guest's expression is quite suspicious."

Ram and Rem stared straight at him, making Subaru feel a wave of pressure. He subconsciously tugged at his pajamas and quickly changed the subject.

"Ah, right... My dear maids, I need to change my clothes, so could you please step out for a moment?"

"Let's go, Sister." Rem gently pulled Ram's sleeve, her voice returning to a calm tone. "Let's go, Rem." Ram nodded and turned to leave the room.

The two walked out one after the other. Once the door clicked shut, Rem whispered to Ram, "Sister, do you really think he is just an ordinary guest? His behavior... feels a bit strange."

"Mm. Although he tries to act upright on the surface, those lewd thoughts are written all over his face. A truly unpleasant fellow." Ram tilted her head slightly, glancing back at the door, before calmly adding, "However, he is a guest brought back by Lady Emilia. We should host him properly."

"Understood, Sister," Rem replied softly with a nod.

As they continued down the hall, Rem spoke again. "Sister, what should we prepare for breakfast today?"

"The usual menu is fine," Ram said, adjusting her hair ornament. "But remember to prepare an extra portion. After all, we have one more guest now."

"Yes, Sister."

Meanwhile, inside the room, Subaru let out a sigh of relief. The image of Rem's slightly cold yet undeniably cute face floated through his mind.

Maid Rem really is cute. If true love has a color, it must be blue. As expected of my wife from that one spin-off route. Fantastic!

But as cute as Rem is, she didn't hesitate to kill me in the original story.

Subaru shuddered at the thought of Rem swinging her morning star.

"So, how should I clear this 'Second Playthrough'?"

Subaru rested his chin in his hand, sinking into deep thought as he quickly reviewed the various plot points from the original series.

His current situation was not optimistic. Although he knew the plot like the back of his hand, this world didn't follow the original trajectory perfectly. Every detail could change because of his intervention, and he wasn't even sure if he had the broken ability of "Return by Death."

He had to stay steady and could not afford to be as reckless as the original Subaru.

He remembered that in the beginning, Rem harbored massive hostility toward him, killing him several times. Her hatred for him was practically etched into her bones, especially when she suspected him of being a spy sent by the Witch Cult. That cold-blooded ruthlessness was enough to make anyone's blood run cold.

"Actually, Rem shouldn't be that hostile toward me yet, right?" Subaru thought.

He had just arrived and hadn't done anything suspicious yet. But even so, he didn't dare lower his guard. Rem's intuition was terrifyingly sharp; the slightest slip could trigger her suspicion.

"And Ram isn't exactly easy to deal with either..."

Subaru sighed. He recalled Ram's mocking eyes and sharp tongue. While she seemed gentler than Rem on the surface, her mind was just as deep. As the older sister, her protective instinct for Rem was incredibly strong. Once she perceived a threat, she would never show mercy.

"Then there's the Bowel Hunter, Elsa..."

The image of that dangerous woman surfaced in Natsuki Subaru's mind again. Her appearance almost always signaled blood and death, and Subaru had no desire to face that maniac again.

"This is getting a bit troublesome..." Subaru rubbed his temples, feeling a headache coming on. He needed to devise a detailed plan as soon as possible to survive in this perilous world.

Just then, a mechanical voice echoed in his mind.
