Chapter 43 - CHAPTER 43: A Precious Plant

The stream faded behind them as the group continued deeper along the outer boundary, the forest floor rising gently into a shallow ridge thick with moss-covered roots and clusters of low, flowering shrubs.

Zyver had taken the lead in the botanical hunting, weaving between the underbrush with the focused enthusiasm of a man who had finally found an outlet worthy of his restless energy.

"Oh, oh, wait, stop, everyone stop," he said suddenly, dropping into a crouch beside a cluster of pale, silvery blooms tucked beneath the shade of a gnarled root.

"What is it now?" Heriot asked irritatedly but he still obediently halted alongside the others.

"A Moonpetal Bloom." Zyver's voice had dropped into something reverent, his fingers hovering just above the delicate petals without touching them.

"Do you understand how rare these are? They only bloom in a soil saturated with old magic, and they only bloom once every few years. Alchemists will surely pay lots of golds for a single properly preserved specimen."

"Is it safe to harvest?" Zyrcus asked, crouching beside him to examine the plant with a doubtful eye.

"Of course! if you cut at the base rather than pulling the roots, then it will be alright. This is the kind of thing that makes an entire expedition worthwhile." Zyver was already retrieving a small, curved blade from his satchel, his earlier flightiness was now replaced by a careful and precise focus.

Zaiveil watched her brother work, something warm settling in her chest at the sight of him so entirely absorbed on what he ws doing.

"You really love doing this, don't you," she said quietly, crouching beside him as he carefully wrapped the harvested bloom in a protective cloth.

"More than anything, Little Sis." Zyver said loudly, glancing at her with an openness that caught her slightly off guard.

"Everyone always talks about charm strength, rank, battle prowess, but there's something satisfying about understanding what a plant can do, what it wants to become when properly refined. It's its own kind of power, little sis. Quieter and gentle but no less important that the other jobs."

"I don't think it's quiet at all, I think it might be one of the most interesting things I've ever seen since arriving here." Zaiveil said while smiling softly.

Zyver's answering grin was blinding, and he opened his mouth, likely to launch into an extended lecture on alchemical theory, when Zyrcus's voice cut gently through the moment.

"There's something ahead," he said, his tone carrying a note of quiet fascination rather than alarm.

The group moved forward together, following Zyrcus's gaze toward a small clearing bathed in an unusually vivid patch of sunlight, where a single flower grew alone amid other ordinary grass, its petals has a deep, star-flecked violet color that seemed to shimmer faintly even without direct light catching it.

Zyver's breath caught audibly.

"That's!?" he started, then stopped slightly, staring with wide disbelieving eyes.

"That's a Starveil Lily!"

"Second Brother, with your reaction, I guess that's precious." Heriot said, watching his brother's reaction with growing curiosity.

"It's beyond precious!"

"Starveil Lilies is a herb only grow near a cosmic-aligned convergence points, usually deep within a forest's magical heart, it shouldn't be out here in the outer part of the forest. I've read about them in books but I've never actually seen one before, and I didn't expect that we will encounter that with our own eyes." Zyver approached it slowly, almost reverently, careful not to disturb the surrounding grass.

"Then why is it growing here?" Herox asked, his earlier caution sharpening into something more alert as he studied the clearing.

Elder Nixie's gaze shifted meaningfully toward Zaiveil, understanding dawning slowly across her expression.

"I believe, that the princess's presence is maybe the reason. If her charm resonance is strong enough to affect the ambient magic even this far into the outer forest, like we saw at the stream, it's entirely possible that her proximity has drawn a cosmic-aligned bloom to flourish and be seen by us." she said carefully

"Elder Nixie, you're saying I'm the cause of this situation?" Zaiveil said slowly, looking at the small, glowing flower with something between wonder and unease.

"I'm not entirely sure about it, but there's a strong possibility, and it's not necessarily a concerning. If anything more like this happened then, I think the forest is responding favorably to your presence, rather than treating you as an intrusion." Elder Nixie corrected gently

Zaiveil approached the flower carefully, kneeling beside it the way she'd seen Zyver do moments ago.

Up close, the lily's petals seemed to hold tiny, flickering points of light within their violet depths, like captured stardust suspended in delicate glass.

"May I?" she asked, glancing toward Zyver, who nodded eagerly, though his hands remained clasped tightly together, visibly restraining himself from simply harvesting it on her behalf.

She reached out slowly, her fingers hovering just above the petals the way Zyver's had over the Moonpetal Bloom.

The moment her skin made contact, the flower's glow deepened briefly, pulsing once in gentle recognition before settling back into its quiet shimmer, the same warm familiarity she'd felt at the stream threading softly beneath her fingertips.

"It responded to you," Zyrcus said quietly, watching with quiet fascination.

"The same way the water did," Zaiveil murmured, carefully putting the stem free at its base the way Zyver had instructed.

The lily came away cleanly, its glow unwavering in her palm.

"Little sis, you have no idea what this means. A Starveil Lily harvested by the very charm that likely coaxed it into blooming, do you understand how significant that is for my alchemical research? I could write papers about this. I could revolutionize half the theories on cosmic-adjacent flora." Zyver said, practically vibrating with restrained excitement.

"Try not to get too far ahead of yourself, Second Brother," Herox said, though there was clear amusement beneath his warning tone.

"I'm always ahead of myself. It's part of my charm."

"That's not a charm. That's just recklessness."

"Recklessness is simply confidence that hasn't been proven wrong yet."

Zaiveil laughed softly at the exchange, cradling the glowing lily carefully as she rose to her feet, the warmth of its light steady against her palm. The quiet clearing, her brothers bickering, the small, impossible flower blooming because of her, settled deeply and comfortably into her chest.
