The ride toward Havenmyst Forest took the better part of the morning, the paved roads of Celestia's capital gradually giving way to open countryside, then rolling hills dotted with villages, towns and finally the dense, dark line of trees that marked the forest's edge, visible long before they reached it.
"There it is," Herox said, drawing his horse to a stop at the crest of a low hill, the others gathering beside him.
Havenmyst Forest stretched wide across the horizon, ancient and vast, its canopy was so thick in places that even the light beneath seemed to dim it into a permanent twilight even at midday. The trees here were unlike any Zaiveil had seen within the palace gardens, it's was all towering and gnarled, their bark was a deep, mossy black that seemed to drink in the sunlight rather than reflect it.
"So beautiful," Zaiveil murmured, and she meant it, despite the faint prickle of unease crawling along her arms.
"It's beautiful in a different way, like a sleeping predator waiting for it's prey. Don't let the prettiness of this forest fool you, little sis." Heriot said, dismounting and studying the treeline like a soldier's with practiced wariness in it's surroundings.
"Third Brother's right, Zai. The outer edge is still manageable for most charmers. But after that, going more deeper will make things change quickly." Zyrcus added while going down from his own horse.
They left the horses tethered near a small outpost at the forest's border, a modest wooden structure manned by two Celestia foresters who greeted the royal party with startled, hasty bows.
"Your Highness the Crown Prince, Princes and Princess, greetings. Is there, ah, anything we can assist with?" the eldest among the two stammered, clearly unprepared for a visit from the entire young royals.
"Just watched the horses for us," Herox said easily.
The forester's eyes widened slightly at that, though he nodded without further question, long accustomed to the particular unpredictability of charmers and their expeditions.
Zaiveil adjusted the strap of her pack, feeling the weight of Zyver's tonics settled against her hip, the practical travel clothes her mother had commissioned fitting snugly and allowing full range of motion, an odd, welcome contrast to the elegant, restrictive robes she'd worn in the palace before.
For the first time since her return, she felt something close to the readiness she'd once carried as the assassin, Phantom, although the feeling beneath it now was entirely different.
"Ready?" Herox asked, looking between his siblings.
"Yes, Big Brother." Zaiveil said, and the others echoed her in turn, Zyver was filled with restrained excitement despite Heriot's warning glance.
They crossed into the forest together, the outpost fading behind them after a moments of walking, it was swallowed by the deepening shade of the canopy overhead. The air shifted almost immediately, cooler, thicker, carrying the rich scent of damp earth and old growth, layered, it's faintly sweet, and has a faint electric feeling, like the moment before a storm broke.
"Stay close," Elder Nixie said quietly, her earlier gentleness sharpening into a more focused alertness as she moved to the center of the group. "The outer forest is calmer than what lies deeper in, but it's calmness doesn't mean it's safe as it looks."
Zaiveil nodded, her senses sharpening instinctively, her old self awakening beneath the surface of her awareness. The forest around them was quiet, almost unnervingly so, the distant call of birds and the rustle of leaves the only sounds breaking the stillness.
And yet, as she took her first steps deeper beneath the ancient canopy, that same faint, magnetic pull she'd felt at the Awakening Test, at the auction house, in the moment her hand had first closed around the Veilbound Locket, stirred quietly to life once more, threading beneath her ribs like a low, patient hum.
It's because,
Something in the depths of Havenmyst Forest had noticed her arrival.
And it had been waiting for her, for a very very long time.
The outer edge of Havenmyst Forest unfolded slowly around them, the canopy thickening overhead until the sunlight filtered down in a scattered, dappled patches rather than the open gold of the fields they'd left behind.
Zaiveil moved with careful and measured steps, her eyes tracking the shift of shadow between the trees, Instincts settling comfortably over her like a second skin.
"You're doing that thing again," Zyrcus said quietly, falling into step beside her.
"What thing?" Zaiveil asked, curiously
"You're scanning everything. Like you're expecting someone to suddenly jump out at us." He tilted his head, studying her with quiet curiosity.
"I suppose it's an old habits kicking out, cause it helps to keep me alive. That's why I don't see any reason to abandon them simply because I'm in a different world nor a different life." Zaiveil's said, her gaze swept over a cluster of low ferns, noting the way their fronds curled unnaturally tight, as though flinching from something
"You're right, and i agree with that. If it can help you survive then it's for the best, it's just mean that there's still one thing that could protect you if we're not besides you." Zyrcus said in a serious tone, because he found it more reassuring for Zaiveil's safety.
Ahead of them, Herox led with the map tucked beneath one arm, occasionally glancing at the trees around them and comparing their growth patterns against whatever notations he'd made beforehand.
Heriot walked at the group's flank, one hand resting near the hilt of his blade, while Zyver trailed slightly behind, eyes darting excitedly between the underbrush as though every shadow might be hiding a new specimen worth collecting.
"Bw careful," Elder Nixie warned gently, catching Zyver's sleeve as he leaned toward a cluster of pale, bell-shaped flowers growing along a fallen log.
"Not everything here is as harmless as it looks."
"I know, I know." Zyver straightened, though his fingers still twitched with the urge to reach out.
"Elder Nixie, That's a Duskbell, isn't it? It's mildly toxic if it's ingested, but it's pollen's are actually useful in aiding for sleeping if it would be processed correctly." Zyver excitedly said
"You got it all right. You may study it, just don't touch it barehanded." Elder Nixie said, a faint smile tugging at her mouth despite her caution.
She's still amazed on how knowledgeable Prince Zyver is, when it comes to plants and anything related to alchemy.
Zyver beamed, immediately crouching to examine the flower with the reverent focus of a man who had found it personally, he thinks that it was more interesting than causing trouble.
Zaiveil watched the exchange with quiet amusement in her eyes, the earlier tension in her shoulders easing slightly.
A sudden rustle in the underbrush ahead sent every one of them alert at once.
Heriot's blade was half-drawn before a small, russet-furred hare burst from the ferns, bounding wildly away from the group and vanishing into the deeper brush within seconds.
