Chapter 29 - CHAPTER 29: Awakening Test

The morning of the Awakening Test arrived cloaked in a soft haze, the kind of pale gold light that made even the palace walls look as though they'd been dipped in a honey.

Zaiveil stood before her mirror one last time, watching the servants fuss over the final pleats of her ceremonial robe, pale blue edged with silver thread stitched into the shape of constellations.

"You look so beautiful, my dear," Empress Hernia said from behind her, adjusting a stray strand of silver-violet hair. Her voice trembled faintly, though her smile remained steady.

"Are you nervous?" Empress Hernia asks.

Zaiveil considered the question honestly, the way she'd learned to do these past weeks instead of simply masking it away.

"A little, though I'm not certain what I'm nervous about exactly. The test itself, or what charm it might reveal." she admitted.

"Both are allowed to make you nervous, It would be too strange if they didn't." Empress Hernia said gently.

A knock sounded at the door, and Zyrcus's voice carried through before anyone answered. "Little sis? Everyone's ready, let's go."

She took one last breath, steadying herself the way she once had before a mission, though this fear carried none of the coldness her old life had trained her into.

"I'm ready," she said, and stepped through the door to meet her family.

The walk to the Celestial Elysium took nearly half an hour, the royal procession moving through streets lined with citizens eager for a glimpse of the long-lost princess.

Word had spread fast through the Charmer's Town and beyond, and by the time they reached the towering silver spire of the Elysium, a crowd several hundred strong had gathered at a respectful distance behind the palace guards.

"They're all here for you, little sis." Zyver whispered beside her, practically buzzing with excitement despite Herox's warning look.

"Do you know how rare it is for commoners to show up for an Awakening Test? Usually it's just family." Zyver continued

"They just probably want to see if the rumors are true about Sis." Heriot muttered, though there was no real bite behind the words.

"Or they just simply want to welcome her properly." Zyrcus said quietly, offering Zaiveil a small, steadying smile as they climbed the wide marble steps toward the Elysium's entrance.

Inside, the air shifted instantly, cooler and heavier, thick with old magic that seemed to hum faintly against her skin.

The central chamber stretched high overhead, its domed ceiling carved with the same constellations that decorated her robe, though these seemed to shimmer faintly with real starlight rather than having a mere paint.

At the center of the chamber stood the Trial Stone, a towering obelisk of pale crystal veined with faint threads of gold, pulsing softly like it was something alive.

Elder Truze, Elder Nixie, Elder Lou, and Elder Prio waited beside it, along with General Harper standing at rigid attention near the chamber's edge.

Elder Cryzton stood closest to the stone itself, leaning on his staff, his weathered face carrying a mixture of pride and quiet apprehension he didn't bother hiding.

"Princess Zaiveil. Are you prepared to begin?" Elder Truze inclined his head as Zaiveil approached.

"I am," she said, her voice steady despite the flutter feeling beneath her ribs.

"Then let us proceed." Elder Nixie's gentle voice carried through the chamber. "Approach the stone, Princess, and place your palm flat against its surface. The Trial Stone will read your affinity and reveal the charm bound to your soul."

Zaiveil glanced once toward her family, gathered a short distance away. Her mother's hands were clasped tightly together, her father's expression carefully composed though his eyes betrayed his worry. Her four brothers stood in a loose row, Herox still dignified as ever, Zyver practically vibrating in place, Heriot's arms crossed with forced casualness, Zyrcus watching her with quiet, unwavering warmth.

'Whatever happens, they'll still be here for me.' she thought

That thought alone steadied her more than she expected.

She stepped forward, climbing the three shallow steps leading to the Trial Stone's base. Up close, the crystal thrummed with a low vibration she could feel in her teeth, its surface cool beneath the chamber's shifting light.

"Whenever you're ready, Princess," Elder Truze said.

Zaiveil lifted her hand and pressed her palm flat against the stone.

For a moment, nothing happened. Then the crystal flared to life beneath her palm, threads of gold light racing outward from the point of contact, spreading rapidly across the stone's entire surface like veins catching fire.

A low hum built steadily into something closer to a chorus, dozens of overlapping tones rising in pitch as the light intensified.

Gasps rippled through the chamber. Even the stoic elders leaned forward, their eyes wide with something between awe and alarm.

"That's, that's an unusually strong reaction," Elder Prio murmured, his traditionalist composure cracking for the first time since Zaiveil had met him.

"I've never seen the stone react like this, not even during the strongest Awakening Tests I've witnessed." Elder Lou said, his skepticism giving way to genuine astonishment.

The golden light climbed higher, wrapping around Zaiveil's arm, then her shoulder, then spreading further still until her entire body seemed wreathed in shifting constellations of light, as though the night sky itself had decided to drape across her skin.

She felt it then, a warmth blooming deep in her chest, spreading outward like something long dormant finally stirring awake. It didn't hurt exactly, but it pressed against her ribs with a weight that made her breath catch.

"Little Sis, are you alright?" Zyrcus's voice cut through the chamber, it was sharp with concern.

She didn't answer, too focused on the sensation building inside her, something vast and impossibly old uncoiling from somewhere she hadn't known existed within herself.

The light around her surged one final time, blinding in its intensity, forcing everyone in the chamber to shield their eyes.

And then, as suddenly as it began, everything stopped.

The light vanished.

The hum died into silence.

The Trial Stone, which moments ago had blazed brighter than anything Zaiveil had ever seen, dimmed back to its usual pale glow, inert and quiet, as though nothing at all had happened.

Zaiveil lowered her hand slowly, her chest still heaving faintly from the intensity of it all, and turned toward the elders, waiting.

Elder Truze stared at the stone, his expression frozen.

Elder Nixie's hand had risen to cover her mouth.

Elder Lou hadn't moved at all, his eyes fixed somewhere between disbelief and confusion.

Even Elder Cryzton, who had guided Zaiveil through so much, looked genuinely shaken, his knuckles white where they gripped his staff.

"Elder Truze? "What does it say? What's my rank? My charm?" Zaiveil asked, an uneasy weight settling in her stomach at the silence stretching too long across the chamber.

No one answered.

"Elder Truze, what's wrong?" she repeated, more firmly this time, glancing between the elders' stricken faces.

It was Elder Cryzton who finally spoke, his voice barely above a whisper, though it carried through the silent chamber like a struck bell.

"My princess, the stone shows nothing." he said slowly, disbelief threading through every word.

The words hung in the air, heavy and impossible.

"Nothing?" Zaiveil repeated, her brow furrowing.

"What do you mean, nothing?"

Elder Truze finally tore his gaze from the stone, turning to face her, his usually composed expression cracked wide open with something close to bewilderment.

"Princess Zaiveil," he said carefully, each word measured as though he himself couldn't quite believe what he was about to say.

"According to the Trial Stone, you doesn't have a charm at all."
