After Kael left, I remained seated beside the twins for a long time, listening to the sound of his footsteps disappear down the corridor. His warning continued to echo in my mind, not because I doubted him, but because I had already begun to notice the same thing. The fortress was changing around us. People looked at me differently now. Servants became quieter whenever they entered my chambers, guards watched the children longer than they needed to, and even the healers had started examining them with an uneasiness they tried to disguise as professional curiosity. Everyone seemed to be waiting for something, and I was beginning to fear that whatever they were waiting for had already begun.
I looked down at the twins.
They were awake.
They were almost always awake now.
