Chapter 127 – The Growth That Shouldn't Be Possible

Three days passed before I finally admitted to myself that something was seriously wrong with the twins.
Or perhaps wrong wasn't the right word.
Nothing about them appeared sick. They weren't weak, they weren't feverish, and they didn't show any of the signs the healers had warned me to watch for. If anything, they appeared healthier every morning, which should have comforted me.
Instead, it frightened me.
Because they weren't simply growing.
They were changing.
The first thing I noticed was their strength.
It happened on the fourth morning after they spoke to me. I had been sitting beside their cradle while one of the healers examined the girl. The healer lifted her carefully, supporting her head and neck as she had done countless times before, but halfway through the examination, the girl's tiny hand closed around the healer's finger.
The healer smiled.
Then her smile disappeared.
