Chapter 3 - 3:Whispers of the crimson

Whispers of the Crimson Moon

The city was silent when Lin Yue and Shen Wei emerged from the alley, but the silence was heavy, almost oppressive. Lanterns swung gently in the night breeze, casting elongated shadows that seemed to twist and writhe along the ancient walls.

Lin Yue's hands trembled slightly as she adjusted her shawl. "What… what are they?" she whispered.

Shen Wei's eyes scanned the empty street, alert and calculating. "They are the guardians of the old bloodlines," he said quietly. "The ones who keep the city's secrets buried. And they do not take kindly to intruders."

Lin Yue shivered. She had always thought of herself as ordinary, a girl with simple hopes. Yet here she was, entangled in a world she did not understand, walking beside a man who radiated danger and power.

"Why the families?" she asked, finally breaking the silence.

Shen Wei's jaw tightened. "Old bloodlines. Powerful, secretive, ancient. They maintain balance in Xiangcheng, but balance comes at a price. Betrayal is punished swiftly, and secrets… are more dangerous than swords."

A sudden movement caught her eye—a shadow detaching itself from the far corner of the street. She froze, but Shen Wei's hand shot out, brushing against hers again, grounding her.

"Do not speak," he whispered.

The shadow grew taller, stepping into the faint lantern glow. A woman emerged, cloaked in black silk, her eyes sharp and calculating. "Shen Wei," she said, voice smooth but edged with steel. "You brought her."

"Yes," Shen Wei replied evenly, his hand never leaving Lin Yue's. "She is not just anyone. The moon has chosen her."

The woman's gaze flicked to Lin Yue, appraising, measuring. "The moon chooses many, but not all survive its call."

Lin Yue's stomach churned. "Survive… what?"

The woman ignored her. "The families will be watching, Shen Wei. You know what is at stake. One mistake…"

"…could cost us everything," Shen Wei finished for her, his tone grim.

Lin Yue took a hesitant step forward. "I need to know… why me? Why now?"

The woman's eyes softened just slightly, enough for Lin Yue to catch a hint of understanding. "Some destinies are written before we are even born," she said. "And some blood cannot be hidden. The city has been waiting for you, Lin Yue. Waiting for the one who can change its fate."

The wind carried a distant howl, cutting through the street like a knife. The woman's eyes darkened. "And the hunters are already moving. You have little time."

Shen Wei released Lin Yue's arm, letting her take a steadying breath. "Come," he said, urgency creeping into his voice. "We must leave the street. Secrets will follow, but action… action can keep you alive."

Lin Yue nodded, heart pounding, and stepped beside him. As they slipped back into the twisting alleys of Xiangcheng, the crimson moon shone down, a silent witness to the city's hidden war—and to the destiny that had chosen her.
