Chapter 67 - ঌ -----

I opened the targeting interface.

[TARGET DETECTED]

Target: RAZORBACK

Classification: Alpha Reptilia-Class Variant

Rank: S

Primary Cognitive Architecture: Organic

Neural Complexity: Extreme

External Interface: None

Nanotech Rebirth: Available

A second prompt appeared.

[PROCEED?]

I tapped YES.

The world changed.

Not physically.

Perceptually.

My HUD flooded with information as the Codebreaker peeled back the layers between observation and access.

The Razorback's body became translucent.

Muscle.

Bone.

Blood vessels.

Energy channels.

Neural pathways.

Millions upon millions of connections illuminated across my vision.

For a moment, I simply stared.

That's... a lot of brain.

The creature's nervous system was absurdly complex.

Its neural architecture wasn't centralized in the way human biology was. Instead, it possessed several distributed neural clusters connected through an extraordinarily dense bioelectric network.

A primitive biological mesh.

Every movement.

Every sensory input.

Every instinctive response.

Everything passed through that network.

My grin returned.

"There you are."

I didn't need to control the entire creature.

That would be stupid.

And, frankly, impossible.

An S-Rank monster wasn't a machine I could simply overwrite with a few lines of code.

But I didn't need everything.

I needed one thing.

Behavior.

The system began constructing access pathways.

[NANOTECH REBIRTH: INITIALIZING]

[NEURAL STRUCTURE MAPPED: 17%]

[WARNING: TARGET RESISTANCE EXTREME]

The Razorback roared.

The sound punched through the tunnel.

My teeth rattled.

The interface flickered.

[NEURAL STRUCTURE MAPPED: 31%]

I clenched my jaw.

"Yeah, yeah. I heard you."

Its massive claw swung toward the tunnel.

I dove sideways.

The claw struck the entrance.

Concrete exploded.

The entire tunnel shuddered.

Dust filled my lungs.

I coughed once and rolled behind a support pillar.

The system kept working.

[NEURAL STRUCTURE MAPPED: 48%]

My vision blurred.

Pain crawled from my temples toward the base of my skull.

The Codebreaker wasn't reading the creature anymore.

It was trying to understand it.

There was a difference.

Reading data was easy.

Interpreting a living intelligence was another problem entirely.

The Razorback didn't think in words.

It didn't reason like humans.

Its cognitive architecture was dominated by instinctive hierarchies.

Territory.

Threat.

Hunger.

Dominance.

Survival.

I saw fragments of its sensory processing as the system translated them into comprehensible patterns.

Heat.

Movement.

Vibration.

Noise.

Intrusion.

Everything unfamiliar was categorized as a threat.

Everything that challenged its territory became prey or enemy.

That explained the aggression trigger.

It wasn't angry.

It was territorial.

Good.

Anger was difficult to manipulate.

Instincts were cleaner.

I opened the behavioral architecture.

[PRIMARY RESPONSE LOOP DETECTED]

INTRUDER → THREAT ASSESSMENT → AGGRESSION

I stared at the sequence.

There.

A simple loop buried beneath millions of biological connections.

I didn't need to dominate the beast.

I needed to interrupt the loop.

The Razorback's eye appeared through the dust.

It stared directly at me.

The neural network spiked.

THREAT DETECTED

The response loop activated.

AGGRESSION

I pushed Nanotech Rebirth deeper.

The system resisted.

[TARGET RESISTANCE: 87%]

My nose started bleeding.

A warm line slipped over my upper lip.

I wiped it with the back of my hand.

"Come on."

The interface flickered.

[TARGET RESISTANCE: 91%]

"Don't make me regret this."

Another spike.

[TARGET RESISTANCE: 94%]

The pain intensified.

My fingers trembled.

I could feel my heartbeat inside my skull.

This wasn't hacking a door.

This wasn't bypassing a security system.

I was trying to insert myself into the cognitive architecture of an S-Rank lifeform.

One mistake and the backlash could fry my nervous system.

One bad rewrite and I could turn a territorial monster into an even more unpredictable one.

Possibly one that wanted to eat me.

Which, admittedly, would make this experiment considerably less successful.

I narrowed my focus.

Don't overwrite.

That was the mistake amateurs made.

They saw a system and tried to replace it.

I didn't need to replace anything.

I needed to redirect it.

My fingers moved across the interface.

I isolated the aggression trigger.

Movement.

Noise.

Light.

Three variables.

Then I isolated the territorial recognition layer.

The Razorback's cognitive system connected the two.

UNKNOWN PRESENCE → TERRITORIAL VIOLATION → AGGRESSION

I smiled.

"That's your problem."

My code slipped between the pathways.

"Your definition of 'intruder' is too broad."

I rewrote one parameter.

Then another.

The system screamed warnings at me.

[CAUTION]

[BEHAVIORAL MODIFICATION DETECTED]

[COGNITIVE INTEGRITY: 93%]

[FOREIGN CODE INJECTION: ACTIVE]

The Razorback froze.

Its claw stopped inches above the ground.

The massive creature stared at me.

For the first time since the trial began, it didn't attack.

I didn't breathe.

Neither did my drones.

The entire ruined city seemed to hold its breath with me.

Then the Razorback lowered its claw.

Slowly.

Its crimson eyes remained fixed on mine.

My HUD updated.

[PRIMARY RESPONSE LOOP: INTERRUPTED]

I stared.

Then a laugh escaped me.

"No way."

The Razorback tilted its head.

I tilted mine.

It tilted farther.

I raised an eyebrow.

It copied the movement.

I almost laughed again.

"Are you serious?"

The system flickered.

[BEHAVIORAL RESPONSE: NON-HOSTILE]

I stared at the creature.

Then at the system.

Then back at the creature.

The objective remained unchanged.

[SOLO TRIAL]

Objective: Survive.

No instruction said I had to kill it.

That was the important distinction.

The Tower wanted me to survive.

It had never explicitly required me to defeat the Razorback.

I leaned against the support pillar, still breathing hard.

"So that's the loophole."

The creature lowered its head.

Its enormous snout came within several meters of me.

Heat rolled from its nostrils.

The smell was unpleasant.

A mixture of scorched metal, wet stone, and something distinctly biological.

I resisted the urge to step backward.

The Razorback sniffed.

Then it stopped.

My interface flashed.

[TARGET RELATIONSHIP UPDATED]

RAZORBACK: NEUTRAL

I blinked.

Neutral.

Not friendly.

Not tamed.

But no longer hostile.

That was enough.

At least for now.

I slowly extended one hand.

The Razorback watched.

I hesitated.

"Don't bite."

Its crimson eye narrowed.

"Seriously. I've had a bad enough day."

The creature made a low rumbling sound.

My sensors interpreted it as a non-aggressive vocalization.

I smiled.

"Good."

Then another notification appeared.

I frowned.

It wasn't the familiar black-and-green interface of the Codebreaker.

Nor was it GAIA's sterile white-blue HUD.

The visual signature was different—cleaner, almost clinical, with an unfamiliar system architecture beneath the surface.

I'd seen it before.

The same kind of notification that had appeared during the Tower Bootcamp.

My instincts immediately went on alert.

Then a line of text appeared.

[TRIAL ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE DETECTED.]

A second line followed.

[TRIAL CONDITION EVALUATION]

My smile faded.

The system had noticed.

Of course it had.

Whatever that created this trial didn't build the Tower to be fooled by technicalities.

The interface began scanning the surrounding environment.

I waited.

[SURVIVAL CONDITION: SATISFIED]

My eyebrows rose.

Then another line appeared.

[HOSTILE TARGET: NEUTRALIZED]

I stared at the words.

"Neutralized?"

The Razorback snorted.

Dust rolled across the floor.

I looked at it.

"Apparently you're my friend now."

The monster gave another low rumble.

"Don't get excited."

The Tower began to react.

The ruined metropolis flickered.

Buildings became translucent.

The sky fragmented.

The entire environment began dissolving into cascading streams of data.

My body suddenly felt heavier.

The headache I'd been ignoring came crashing back.

I stumbled.

My hand caught the wall.

"Okay."

I wiped the blood beneath my nose.

"Definitely not doing that again unless absolutely necessary."

The system displayed one final notification.

[SOLO TRIAL: COMPLETE]

[CLEAR METHOD: NON-COMBAT]

I stared at it.

Then laughed.

The trial had designed an S-Rank monster to kill me.

I had rewritten its threat perception instead.

No victory fanfare.

No mountain of corpses.

No dramatic boss execution.

Just one biological exploit and a sufficiently flexible interpretation of the word survive.

Honestly?

That was more satisfying.

Weakness spread through my entire body, heavy and immediate, as though whatever strength I had left had been drained straight out of my bones.

The world went white.

The Razorback seemingly disappeared.

And just before the transition swallowed everything, I caught one last glimpse of those crimson eyes.

The monster stared back at me.

For some reason, I had the uncomfortable feeling that I'd made a friend.

A hundred-meter-tall S-Rank friend.

Excellent.

Exactly what I needed.
