The sun rose slowly over the village, pale light spreading across the rooftops. Xu Yang sat on the edge of the granary roof, his tail curled around his legs as he watched the village wake up. Doors opened, villagers stepped outside, and thin smoke rose from the chimneys. Everything looked normal. That was exactly what bothered him.Xu Yang narrowed his eyes. Why does this place always look peaceful right before something goes wrong?... He had started to notice the pattern.
A quiet morning, a few strange signs, and then trouble. Somehow, he was always there when it happened. His ears twitched. The village sounded the same as always, but something felt different. A man opened his door, stood there for a moment, then quietly went back inside. A dog barked at the empty road before suddenly going silent. A woman carrying a basket stopped in the middle of the street and looked toward the eastern fields. After a few seconds, she continued walking.
Xu Yang watched her until she disappeared into another house. Okay... I'm not imagining this. Something is wrong. He shifted slightly on the roof, keeping his body low. Maybe I should leave before things get worse...He looked down at the village again. Then he thought of Lin Chen. Right. Of course I can't just leave...Then suddenly faint smell reached him.Xu Yang's ears turned toward the eastern fields at once. His expression became serious.Great. Just what I needed... He lowered his head and sniffed again, trying to find where it was coming from. His claws pressed into the wooden beam.
Xu Yang stared toward the fields without moving. Should I warn Lin Chen? But what am I supposed to say? "Good morning. Heaven might be planning something terrible today."...He imagined Lin Chen staring at him in confusion. Yeah. That would definitely make things awkward...Xu Yang sighed quietly and looked toward the fields again. Maybe I should just wait and see what happens. Then again, that was usually how trouble started....
Xu Yang lowered himself slightly and scanned the village. "This is getting annoying." Then quiet voice came from behind him. "You have been saying that quite often lately." Xu Yang's ears twitched. He turned his head and found Qing Li standing a few steps behind him, one hand resting against a wooden post.Xu Yang stared at him for a moment. "How long have you been standing there?" "Long enough to hear you complain." "You could have announced yourself." Qing Li raised an eyebrow. "Would you have been less annoyed if I did?" Xu Yang gave him a flat look. "No." "Then I made the right choice."
Xu Yang sighed and turned back toward the village. "You really enjoy making things difficult." Qing Li walked over and stopped beside him. "Only when you make it so easy." Xu Yang's eyes narrowed. "That's exactly the kind of answer that makes me want to push you off this roof." Qing Li looked down at the ground several meters below, then back at him. "You could try." His tone was calm, almost lazy. "But I doubt you would actually do it." Xu Yang's tail flicked sharply. "Don't be so sure." "I'm not." Qing Li smiled slightly. "That's why I'm still standing here."
Xu Yang looked at him from the corner of his eye. "You know, for someone who claims to be watching carefully, you seem very comfortable provoking people." "I'm selective." "Apparently I'm one of your favorites." Qing Li's smile deepened just a little. "I didn't say that." "You didn't have to." Xu Yang turned away again, clearly annoyed. Qing Li watched him for a moment before quietly saying, "You get irritated very easily." "Only around you." "I noticed." Xu Yang's expression tightened. "And you seem strangely pleased about that."
Qing Li leaned one shoulder against the wooden post. "Perhaps I am." Xu Yang looked back at him. "At least you're honest." "With you? Sometimes." Xu Yang gave him an awkward smile. "Should I be happy about that?" Qing Li looked at him for a moment, then reached over and lightly placed a hand on Xu Yang's shoulder. A small smile appeared on his face. "You can." Xu Yang stared at him, then slowly moved his shoulder away from Qing Li's hand. "I'm not as leisurely as you." He turned back toward the village. "I have to focus. You can try that with someone else." Qing Li let out a quiet laugh. "You're no fun." "I'm trying to stay alive." "Even better reason to enjoy yourself once in a while." Xu Yang gave him a tired look. "I'll enjoy myself after nothing is trying to kill me." Qing Li smiled but didn't reply.
For a moment, they watched the village below. The morning looked peaceful, but Xu Yang could feel something wrong beneath it. A farmer crossed the road with a basket over his shoulder.Children ran between the houses.Smoke rose slowly from the chimneys. Everything looked ordinary. That was what made Xu Yang uneasy."It's fragile." he said quietly. Qing Li glanced at him. "The village?" "The balance." Xu Yang's eyes followed the farmer walking toward the fields."Too many strange things have happened here. Someone is going to push it." Qing Li's expression became thoughtful. "And when they do?" "I'll survive." Xu Yang's voice was flat, but his heart beat a little faster. "And I'll make sure nothing else gets hurt."
Qing Li studied him for a moment. "That's what worries me." Xu Yang turned toward him. "Why?" Qing Li's gaze remained on the village. "Because you keep saying you only want to survive, but every time something happens, you put yourself between the danger and everyone else." Xu Yang looked away. "You talk too much." "Only when you're pretending not to listen." Xu Yang gave him an irritated glance. "You really do enjoy this." Qing Li looked at him calmly. "A little."
Xu Yang turned back toward the village. "At least you're honest about being annoying." "I have never claimed otherwise."Qing Li's expression slowly became more serious as he watched the road. "You're preparing. Hiding. Calculating your next move. But you're already seen." Xu Yang's tail flicked once. "By who?" "By those who don't need to show themselves." Qing Li replied quietly. "They are patient, careful and they are watching." The words settled heavily in Xu Yang's mind. He knew exactly who Qing Li meant.
Before Xu Yang could respond, the air shifted and faint ripple passed through the Village, Livestock stirred,Dogs barked. Smoke from chimneys wavered unnaturally. Xu Yang leapt down from the roof, moving silently along the edges of the village. His claws dug into the dirt as he approached the eastern fields toward the place where the last disturbance had been noticed.
A faint scent lingered in the air. Not strong, but enough for him to track. He crouched low, eyes scanning. Then he saw it. A small fire had begun near the grain storage. He shifted into his cat form, moving faster than any human could, silent and precise. The flames were minimal, but the smoke was already rising toward the village.Qing Li appeared at the edge of the smoke, watching calmly. "You're quicker than I expected," he said. "But not fast enough." Xu Yang hissed softly, ducking as a few embers skittered toward him. "Who is doing this?" Qing Li's expression remained neutral. "Why are you asking me?! I'm standing here with you!" Qing Li looked at him for a moment, then glanced toward the fire. "You do have a point." Xu Yang's ears twitched. "I usually do." "I noticed." Qing Li's lips curved faintly. "You just don't usually sound this offended while making it." Xu Yang gave him an irritated look before turning back toward the fire.
The fire sputtered and died before it could grow. Xu Yang had guided the embers into the dirt, controlling their direction just enough to keep the flames away from the grain and making sure the villagers never noticed. He exhaled, his tail flicking nervously. "This is just the beginning." he muttered. Qing Li stood nearby, watching the last thread of smoke disappear. "Yes. And you will see why patience is a weapon. You'll need it." Xu Yang glanced at him. "You say that like patience is something I have." Qing Li's lips curved slightly. "I've noticed." Xu Yang gave him a tired look. "Don't sound so pleased about it."
Qing Li quietly laughed and stepped closer, brushing a small piece of ash from his sleeve. "I'm not. I'm just surprised you haven't tried to solve everything by yourself yet." Xu Yang's ears twitched. "I didn't." He glanced toward the burned ground. "I had help." Qing Li raised an eyebrow but said nothing. Xu Yang caught the look and narrowed his eyes. "Don't." Qing Li's smile grew a little. "I didn't say anything." Xu Yang turned away with a quiet huff. "That's exactly the problem."Xu Yang crouched low, eyes scanning the treeline again. The weight of the invisible threads pressed against him.
Then he noticed something and turned back toward Qing Li. "Wait, I—" He stopped. Qing Li was gone. Xu Yang blinked and looked around. The wooden post was empty. He checked the roof, the trees, and the path below, but there was no sign of him."Wow."
Xu Yang slowly stood up. "They really can just come and go whenever they want." He looked toward the treeline again. "What is this?" He rubbed his forehead and sighed. "And what exactly am I to them?"Xu Yang looked down at the burned patch of ground. "Am I some kind of important person to them?" He shook his head quickly. "No. Probably not." He paused. "Then why keep watching me?"He glanced around once more before lowering his ears."I really don't understand these people."
By the next morning, the village was already awake. A few villagers stood outside their houses, talking about the strange fire from the night before. Some were checking the fields while others looked at the burned patch from a distance. No one seemed to know how the fire had started.Xu Yang crouched atop the granary roof, tail wrapped tightly around his legs, ears twitching at every distant sound. He watched the villagers for a while, his eyes narrowing slightly."They really have no idea," he thought. "Good." He glanced at the burned field again. "But someone started it on purpose." His tail tightened around his legs. "And I just had to be the one who found it." He let out a quiet sigh. "Other people get peaceful village mornings. I get mysterious fires, strange demons, and Heaven trying to ruin my life." He paused. "Being a cat was supposed to be easier."
A sudden voice came from directly behind him. "You look busy."Xu Yang's whole body jumped. His fur stood up, and he nearly slipped from the roof. He quickly caught the edge with his claws and turned around. Qing Li was standing behind him as if he had been there the whole time.Xu Yang stared at him, then slowly climbed back onto the roof. "What do you think you're doing?!" Qing Li looked at him calmly. "Talking to you." "You nearly made me fall." Xu Yang brushed his paws against the roof tiles and glared at him. "If I had fallen, would you have caught me?" Qing Li considered it for a moment. "Probably." Xu Yang's eyes narrowed. "Probably?" "You would have landed on your feet." Xu Yang stared at him in disbelief. "That's not the point." Qing Li's lips curved slightly. "I know. I'll be careful next time."
Xu Yang looked at him. "Next time?" He pointed a paw at Qing Li. "No next time. Just walk normally like everyone else." Qing Li raised an eyebrow. "You have very strict rules." "Yes. Especially when someone keeps trying to scare me." Qing Li gave a quiet laugh. "I'll remember that." Xu Yang narrowed his eyes. "You'd better! You really enjoy making people uncomfortable." "Only the interesting ones." Xu Yang stared at him. "That's supposed to make me feel better?" "No." Qing Li's smile returned. "But you looked like you needed something to complain about."
Xu Yang rubbed his forehead with one paw before remembering he was still in cat form. He stared at his paw for a second, then quietly shifted back. "You're exhausting." Qing Li looked pleased. "And yet you keep talking to me." Xu Yang adjusted his sleeve and looked away. "Because you keep appearing." "Then perhaps you're the one making it convenient." Xu Yang's eyes narrowed. "Don't push your luck." Qing Li's smile softened. "There you are."
"I already told you," Xu Yang muttered, voice low, "I survive. That's all matters for me."
Qing Li tilted his head, a faint smirk crossing his lips. "You calculate every step, measure every shadow." Xu Yang didn't respond. His sharp ears caught a faint rustle behind him. He turned and saw Yan Luo there. Yan Luo stood calmly a short distance away,His eyes moved from Xu Yang to Qing Li, then back again. "I see you've both been busy." he said. Xu Yang's expression tightened. "Can I get some privacy?" Qing Li looked at Yan Luo with mild curiosity. "Yan Luo, what is privacy?" Yan Luo glanced at him. "You don't know?" Qing Li shook his head. "I don't think Xu Yang knows either. He keeps saying he wants it, but he never gets it."
Xu Yang stared at both of them. "Can you both stop for a second?"Yan Luo's lips curved slightly. "I haven't said anything." Qing Li glanced at him. "He says that whenever he thinks someone is about to say something annoying." Yan Luo looked at Xu Yang. "Is that true?" "Unfortunately, yes." Xu Yang folded his arms. "And you two are becoming very comfortable speaking for me." Qing Li gave a quiet laugh. "You make it easy." Xu Yang looked between them. "I suddenly miss being alone." Yan Luo smiled faintly. "You won't be for long."
Xu Yang straightened slightly, keeping his cat-demon instincts contained. "I've survived this long." "Yes," Yan Luo replied, glancing at Qing Li. "But survival alone is meaningless if you cannot see the net around you." Qing Li's expression flickered briefly. "He notices." "Not enough," Yan Luo said. "The moment you mistake patience for safety, you die. Even now, Heaven is nudging the world, testing you. Subtly, of course. But you will notice, eventually."
Xu Yang's tail twitched under his robes. "I feel it. And I've already seen some of it." Yan Luo's lips curved faintly, almost amused. "Good. Awareness is your first weapon. But it can also become your most dangerous one. The more you notice, the more others may notice you." Xu Yang's ears moved slightly. "That sounds like a very unfair rule." Qing Li glanced at him. "You expected Heaven to play fair?" Xu Yang gave him a flat look. "I was hoping for a small improvement." Qing Li's mouth curved slightly, but before he could answer, the wind shifted and faint scent of smoke and charred grass passed through the air.
Xu Yang's expression changed at once. His ears turned toward the eastern fields, and his eyes narrowed as he tried to find where it was coming from. "Fire?" he asked quietly. Yan Luo looked in the same direction, his calm expression changing only slightly. "Small one." Qing Li stepped closer to the roof edge, his long silver hair moving with the wind. He looked toward the distant fields for a moment before saying, "A test." Xu Yang stared at the thin line of smoke rising above the wheat. "Of course it is." Qing Li glanced at him. "You sound disappointed."
Xu Yang let out a quiet breath and shifted his weight. "I'm tired." "Of the fire?" Qing Li asked. "Of being tested." Xu Yang moved toward the edge of the roof and looked down at the village. "Every time I think things have settled, something else happens. A strange cultivator, a spirit beast, a talisman, and now someone decides a little fire is a good way to see what I do." His tail flicked once in irritation. "At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if the next test is someone dropping a roof on me." Qing Li's lips curved slightly. "You would probably complain about the roof first." Xu Yang gave him a flat look. "I would survive it first. Then I would complain."
Yan Luo's eyes softened with faint amusement, but he quickly looked back toward the fields. "Jokes aside, the fire is close enough to the houses that you cannot ignore it."Xu Yang's expression became serious again. He watched the smoke for a few seconds, then looked toward the villagers below. Most of them were still busy with their morning work. No one had noticed yet. "If I let it unfold, someone gets hurt." Yan Luo remained still. "And if you act?" Xu Yang's fingers tightened against the roof tiles. "Then someone may notice me." He looked toward the fields again. "That's the part I don't like. If it was only me, I could take the risk. But if I move too quickly, they'll know something unusual is here. Then they'll start watching the village more closely."
Qing Li folded his arms and studied him. "So you're not worried about being seen yourself." Xu Yang glanced at him. "I'm worried about what happens after I'm seen." Qing Li's expression changed slightly. "That's a better answer." Xu Yang frowned. "You sound like you're grading me." "Maybe I am." "Then give me a passing mark and stop talking." Qing Li gave a quiet laugh. "You're getting impatient again." Xu Yang's ears flattened. "Because there is a fire." Yan Luo finally looked at him. "Then decide." Xu Yang took one slow breath and stepped closer to the edge. "I'll put it out without letting anyone see me." Qing Li's eyes flickered with approval. "At least you're thinking before moving."
Xu Yang turned toward the eastern fields. A small flame danced along the edge of a wheat patch. The dry grass around it was already starting to catch, and thin smoke was drifting toward the village. Xu Yang watched it for a moment. It was too small to be an accident. "That's deliberate," he said quietly. Yan Luo nodded. "Most likely." Xu Yang's fingers tightened inside his sleeves. "Then I'll keep it small." Before either of them could say anything, he shifted into his cat form and jumped from the roof.He landed softly on the dirt path and lowered himself at once. His ears moved as he watched the nearby villagers. No one had noticed.
Xu Yang moved through the grass, keeping close to the ground until he reached the wheat field. The flames were slowly spreading. He stretched out one paw and pushed the loose embers toward the bare ground. One spark suddenly jumped toward the dry wheat. Xu Yang moved quickly and pressed it into the dirt with his paw. His tail flicked once. "Not today!" he muttered.
A gust of wind suddenly pushed the flames toward him. Xu Yang jumped back, his fur rising along his back. He stared at the fire with clear irritation. "Of course." He lowered himself again and moved closer. With a small push of his power, he guided the burning grass toward a shallow ditch at the edge of the field. The flames followed the movement and quickly weakened. Xu Yang kept his eyes on the last few embers until they finally died."Be careful!" Yan Luo's voice came softly from behind him. Xu Yang turned. Yan Luo stood near the edge of the field, partly hidden by the morning mist. "Do not act in haste. Let the threads reveal themselves."
Xu Yang looked back at the dead flames. "They nearly revealed themselves by burning down the village." Yan Luo's expression remained calm. "That is why you must watch closely." Qing Li appeared beside him, his long silver hair moving lightly in the wind. His eyes rested on Xu Yang. "You move carefully." Xu Yang looked at him. "That's usually considered a good thing." "It is." Qing Li paused. "You just hesitated before the last ember." Xu Yang's eyes narrowed. "You noticed that?" "I notice you." Xu Yang went still for a moment, then looked away. "That's becoming a problem."
Qing Li laughed, but Xu Yang's attention returned to the field. He could feel the threads of fate twisting around him, adjusting and probing. Even this small fire had been enough to pull him into action. "Better hesitant than dead." Xu Yang said evenly, flexing his claws into the dirt. Yan Luo stepped closer. "Patience is not hesitation. But even the most careful creature can be caught by curiosity or pride. Watch yourself." Xu Yang swallowed hard. He could feel it now. The pressure was faint, but it was there. Something was watching how he reacted.
The three of them stood near the edge of the field, each watching a different part of the village. Xu Yang remained low in his cat form. Qing Li stood a few steps behind him, calm but alert. Yan Luo watched the roads and rooftops, his expression unreadable. For a moment, none of them spoke. Then Xu Yang glanced at them. "Do you two always stand around watching me like this?" Qing Li answered first. "Only when you give us a reason." Xu Yang's ears flattened. "I didn't ask for one." "You didn't have to." Qing Li said.
Yan Luo's lips curved slightly at the exchange, but he said nothing."You have not yet realized the full weight of your presence," Yan Luo continued. "Not in this village, not in this life. But you will." Qing Li's silver eyes flicked toward him. "And when he does?" Yan Luo's gaze darkened faintly. "Then he will see the rules. And the consequences of breaking them." Xu Yang looked between them. "You both make everything sound worse than it needs to be." Qing Li glanced at him. "Because you keep hoping it isn't."
Xu Yang sighed. "I liked it better when the only problem was the fire."The wind shifted again, carrying the faint smell of incense, smoke, and something older, colder, an intangible pressure pressing on the village, nudging the unseen threads into movement. Xu Yang crouched low, ready to act, sensing that this minor test was only the beginning. "Next time," Yan Luo murmured, his voice drifting like a shadow, "you may not have the luxury of subtlety."
The three of them one hidden, one observing, one guiding stood as the village awoke around them, the sun creeping higher, shadows stretching long across the dirt paths. And somewhere, far beyond the treeline, threads of fate stretched across the sky, waiting to snap.
