When I woke up, my wife had already left for work. I got dressed, washed up, and walked around the house. My mother-in-law had also gone out long ago. These two strong, career-oriented women were always so busy.
The one constant was that no matter when I got up, a breakfast was always neatly arranged on the dining table.
I let out a long sigh, feeling grateful in my heart. With a wife like this, what more could a man ask for?
After finishing breakfast and cleaning the dishes, I went out, drove back to my own home. It was always more comfortable in my own little nest than at my mother-in-law's place.
Wang Di had approved three days of leave for me to handle my personal matters. Even though things were already settled, I wasn't foolish enough to rush back to work. Who wouldn't want to slack off a bit when they could?
However, I couldn't just idle completely. Although I hadn't done any housework in recent years and had almost become a domestic invalid, before marriage, I was quite skilled at chores. I just needed to get back into the groove a little, and I could still manage a thing or two.
After giving the house a thorough cleaning, I went out to buy groceries. While my cooking skills couldn't match my mother-in-law's, they could easily surpass most men's. Even though I hadn't been near a stove in many years, I was confident I could whip up a table of delicious dishes.
Just as I placed the four dishes and one soup on the table, my wife returned from work.
"Wow, honey, did you make all this?" My wife stared at the food on the table, her eyes sparkling as she exclaimed in surprise.
"It's just cooking a meal. Is it really that surprising?" I felt a bit exasperated.
My wife nodded vigorously. "Of course it is! I remember the last time I ate your cooking was before we got married. I thought I'd never get to eat your food again in this lifetime."
I tilted my head and thought about it. It seemed true. After marriage, cooking had been entirely my wife's domain. I felt a pang of guilt inwardly, but kept a nonchalant expression on my face. "It's no big deal. Whoever is free can cook from now on. Go wash your hands and eat."
"Okay, honey." My wife agreed, rushed up to me, wrapped her arms around my neck, stood on her tiptoes, gave me a firm kiss, then turned and dashed into the bathroom.
I touched my cheek, smelling the lingering fragrance she left behind, and an inexplicable sense of happiness welled up inside me.
After washing her hands, my wife sat properly at the dining table like a child, waiting for the meal to start.
She devoured the entire table of food like a whirlwind, constantly murmuring about how delicious it was.
"Is it really that exaggerated? If you like it, I'll cook for you every day these next two days," I said casually, though my heart swelled with pride.
"Really?" My wife's eyes lit up. Then she pouted and said, "Good husband, as compensation, I'll give you a big surprise this weekend."
"Alright, I'll wait for your surprise then," I replied offhandedly while clearing the table, urging her, "Go take your nap. I'll wake you up at two on the dot."
"Thanks for the hard work, honey." My wife responded sweetly and went back to the bedroom.
As I washed the dishes, I reminisced about the genuine smile my wife had while eating. I couldn't help but hum a little tune, my body swaying along.
In that moment, I actually had a wish: to be a househusband...
I never really thought that doing housework could feel so fulfilling.
In the evening, I prepared another big table of food. My wife excitedly ate everything clean. I hadn't seen her this happy in a long time.
But tonight, I noticed something strange about my wife. Whenever she had a free moment, she would hold her phone, constantly scrolling through something and typing from time to time. It looked like she was chatting.
My wife never used to do this before. As a workaholic, she would usually look up some materials on the computer after dinner to prepare for the next day's work. She would never waste time on entertainment. Tonight, my wife was acting unusual.
Feeling a bit suspicious, I asked, "Aren't you going to look up materials tonight?"
Holding her phone, my wife answered without looking up, "Work can wait. I have more important things to do."
Although puzzled, I didn't feel it was right to press further. I could only suppress my curiosity and watch TV absentmindedly.
My wife held her phone all night, never letting go, until it was time to sleep.
"What are you doing?" I stared blankly at my wife.
My wife rolled up her own bedding, hugged it to her chest, blinked at me, and said mysteriously, "Let's sleep in separate beds until the weekend, so you don't get any ideas."
"Why?" I asked.
"Ah, good husband, be good. You'll know by the weekend." After saying this, my wife kissed me on the cheek, then carried her bedding to the small bedroom.
I was confused, unable to figure out why she suddenly wanted to sleep separately. I wanted to ask for an explanation, but found the door to the small bedroom was actually locked from the inside.
Annoyed, I patted the door and said angrily, "This is too much, Su Nan."
"Goodnight, honey." My wife only replied with these words, and then there was no further sound.
Helpless, I returned to bed. Checking the time, today was already Wednesday. Since my wife said "by the weekend," I might as well patiently wait two more days. Then I'd find out what trick she was up to.
But now there was a serious problem. Today, seeing my wife enjoy the food so much made me happy, and I drank a few glasses of wine. I originally planned to pull my wife into bed tonight to relieve some tension. Now that I was alone, how was I supposed to solve this?
A thirty-year-old man with a family and responsibilities couldn't possibly resort to taking matters into his own hands, could he? That would be too embarrassing.
Just as I was lying in bed, hormones raging, letting my thoughts run wild, my phone rang. It was a WeChat message.
It was a message from Wang Di. What did this woman want from me in the middle of the night?
Curious, I opened the message. It was just a few short words: *Xiao Liao, don't be too sad. I understand you, sis.*
If I remembered correctly, aside from work-related contact and the occasional fantasy about her mature and curvaceous figure, I didn't really have any personal interactions with this woman. Why would she suddenly show concern for me?
I replied politely: *I'm fine, thank you!*
Just as I was about to turn off my phone, I didn't expect Wang Di to send another message: *Sis has been through it, experienced what you're going through now. I know this feeling isn't easy.*
I originally didn't want to engage with her, but this piqued my curiosity. I replied: *You've been through it?*
Then there was no activity for about ten minutes. I thought she wouldn't reply anymore. Just as I was about to go to sleep, the message alert sounded again.
Wang Di replied: *Yes. I once thought I had a very happy family. I loved my husband very much, loved him so much I would have given my life for him. But one day I discovered I had been living a lie. The husband I thought I knew so well actually had several families, and I was just one of his many women. What's even more tragic is that he never loved me.*
After reading this message, I actually felt some sympathy for Wang Di. Although I was forced to wear the "green hat" (be cheated on), at least I could be sure my wife loved me. Wang Di, on the other hand, had nothing.
For a moment, I didn't know how to reply to her. I just felt my usual perception of her as a busybody had changed somewhat.
