Chapter 1 - Welcome...to Jurassica

On a serene afternoon, the sun casts its golden rays over the shimmering waters of the Pacific Northwest, illuminating the rhythmic splashes of the expansive blue ocean. A sense of calm envelops the landscape, with local seagulls gliding effortlessly overhead, their cries echoing in the soft breeze as they search for their next meal. Suddenly, the tranquility shatters as an enigmatic figure streaks across the sky, sending the gulls scattering in a flurry of feathers. With a graceful dive, the creature plunges into the water, reemerging moments later with a silvery fish clutched triumphantly in its grasp.

This remarkable being, though capable of soaring through the air, is not a bird, nor is it a bat, despite its wings crafted from a fine, beige-hued membrane. It is a Pteranodon (ter-An-o-don), a magnificent flying reptile that has long since vanished from our world. Cloaked in glossy black plumage, with tan membranes stretched wide, its wings reveal a deep brown hue on the backside. Its striking blue head is accented by a vivid yellow beak, while a majestic yellow vertical crest, jutting forward boldly, signifies that this Pteranodon is an adult male. After securing its meal, the impressive creature soars back toward its habitat, ready to feast.

The Pteranodon returns to an awe-inspiring realm brimming with a breathtaking array of ecosystems. To the west, ancient forests stand tall, their towering trees whispering secrets of the past; to the north, vast, open plains cradle delicate fern prairies, while arid canyons cut through the landscape in the east. Welcome to Jurassica, a land where the mighty dinosaurs reign supreme! In this primordial paradise, a splendid variety of dinosaurs and other prehistoric beings thrive, remnants of a world long gone yet magically preserved in time.

Among these majestic creatures is a small but spirited dinosaur with an enormous heart. His name is Parker, a delightful bipedal herbivore known as a Parksosaurus (park-sow-Saw-rus). With predominantly light green, scaly skin adorned with a splash of vibrant blue on his underbelly, Parker sports charming rows of spines that trail gracefully from his head to his tail, culminating in a proud beak. His striking light blue eyes glisten with curiosity and warmth, reflecting his delightful personality.

What truly sets Parker apart is his unique sense of style, as he dons a stylish blue denim vest and a cheerful red neckerchief tied neatly around his neck. On this idyllic afternoon, as he leisurely strolls through the fragrant cedar swamp, he hums a cheerful little tune, lost in his thoughts. However, his peaceful reverie is soon interrupted when he spots something peculiar shimmering at a nearby cove at the edge of the swamp, igniting a spark of intrigue within him.

"What in the Mesozoic is that?!" Parker exclaimed, his curiosity piqued. "It doesn't look like anything I've ever encountered in Jurassica."

Feeling a surge of intrigue, Parker decided to venture towards the cove for a closer look. As he approached, his eyes widened at the sight before him. The creature stood at a diminutive height of 5 feet 2 inches, weighing about 103 pounds—a truly bizarre spectacle. It had a delicate frame, radiating an otherworldly charm with its fair skin and a doll-like complexion. Its pale pink lips gently contrasted with a cascade of jaw-length black-blue hair, which bobbed endearingly, falling a few inches above its delicate shoulders.

As Parker knelt to examine the unconscious creature, he noticed the blue amber necklace that adorned its neck, glimmering subtly in the dappled sunlight filtering through the trees. It wore a vibrant blue halter top adorned with striking black stripes along the hem, paired with light blue denim short shorts that hugged its petite form. The blue slip-on shoes completed the unusual ensemble. Clearly, this little anomaly was unlike any creature Parker had ever encountered. The sweet, earthy scent wafting from the creature, however, suggested it belonged to the mammalian family.

"Well, this is a first for me," Parker mused, astonished. "I've never come across a mammal that could rival the size of certain dinosaurs around here."

Realizing that the creature needed help, Parker carefully lifted it in his arms, doing so with a gentle steadiness. Despite the fact that the mammal was taller than him, his saurian strength allowed him to carry the unexpected burden effortlessly. Without haste, he navigated through the lush foliage, making his way back to his hollow tree, nestled comfortably at the island's heart. Though his home was simply a humble sequoia, to Parker, it was the perfect sanctuary.

"Huh," Parker sighed contentedly upon reaching his little hollow tree. "It's Jurassic Fantastic to finally be home!"

With great care, he transported the unconscious creature inside and laid her on a wooden sofa lined with a soft bedding of vibrant green vegetation. Satisfied that she rested peacefully, Parker made his way to the kitchen, seeking a snack for himself and his unexpected guest. Just as he stepped into the kitchen, he heard a soft rustle. The creature began to stir, her stunning deep blue eyes fluttering open as she took in her surroundings.

"W...what happened?" she murmured, sitting up on the sofa, confusion painting her features.

As she glanced around the room, she was enveloped by the eclectic charm of Parker's home—a delightful blend of rustic and primitive elements, highlighted by a sturdy wooden dining table topped with a smooth stone surface, creating an inviting atmosphere. In her daze, she failed to notice Parker reentering the room, carrying a stone bowl brimming with crunchy hazelnuts and fresh juniper berries.

"Oh, you're finally awake!" Parker said, his voice warm with relief. "I was beginning to wonder when—or if—you'd wake up."

Upon catching sight of Parker, the little creature gasped, eyes wide with surprise and a hint of fear, and instinctively ducked behind the sofa. Sensing her trepidation, Parker took a gentle step back, keenly aware he needed to reassure her that he posed no threat. As the tension began to ease, the little dinosaur introduced himself, bridging the gap between them with a tentative smile.

"I'm truly sorry if I startled you," Parker said gently, his voice soothing in the soft morning light. "I noticed you lying unconscious on the sandy shores of Saurus Shores, and I felt compelled to lend a helping hand."

Though initially taken aback by the sound of a small dinosaur speaking, the creature soon sensed the sincerity in Parker's eyes and felt an unexpected urge to approach him, curiosity slowly replacing its apprehension.

"That's alright," the creature replied, gathering its courage as it stepped closer. "I suppose I was just a bit shocked to encounter a creature like you here in this strange place."

"That's a relief to hear," Parker said with a warm smile, his scales shimmering gently in the sunlight. "Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Parker, and I'm a type of plant-eating dinosaur known as a Parksosaurus. Do you, by any chance, have a name?"

"I... I do not know," the mysterious creature admitted, a flicker of confusion crossing its eyes. "For some reason, my memories seem to have slipped away like grains of sand, leaving me adrift."

"Oh, fossils, that's troubling to hear," Parker exclaimed, genuine concern etched on his tiny face. "Do you at least have any inkling of what you are? The scent wafting from you suggests you are a mammal, yet I've never encountered a mammal of your stature here in Jurassica."

"I believe I can shed some light on that," the creature said, its voice steady despite the uncertainty swirling within. "I am what's known as a human being—indeed, a type of mammal, as you've deduced."

"A human being, huh?" Parker replied, tilting his head in fascination. "At least now I have a clearer idea of your species. If only we could uncover the specifics of your identity."

"I know," the young human sighed, a hint of melancholy in her voice. "If only I could piece together the fragments of who I am and where I truly come from."

"Then, until we unveil more about your past," Parker suggested thoughtfully, "why don't we give you a temporary name? Something to call you while we embark on this journey together."

"That sounds like a sensible idea," Amber replied, a slight smile creeping onto her face. "But what name should we choose?"

"How about…," Parker began, his keen eyes catching sight of the striking blue amber necklace that hung around the young lady's neck. "Amber! What do you think of that name?"

"Why... that's perfect!" she exclaimed, her eyes sparkling with delight. "Amber sounds like a beautiful name for me!"

"Alright then, Amber," Parker chuckled, his enthusiasm infectious. "Now that we have that settled, how about I give you a little tour of Jurassica? There's so much to see!"

"You mean spending time with a dinosaur?" Amber said, her voice filled with awe. "I don't want to be a burden to you."

"Relax, it's truly the least I can do," Parker reassured her, his demeanor warm and inviting. "Whenever you're ready, we can set out to explore the wonders of the island together."

Amazed by Parker's unwavering willingness to guide her, Amber followed eagerly as their adventure across the vibrant land of Jurassica began. They ventured into a lush forest, alive with towering conifers and ancient cycads, where the air was thick with the scent of earth and pine. As they meandered through the dense undergrowth, the soothing sound of a nearby stream drew them in, its cool, crystal-clear waters shimmering under the dappled sunlight.

"Looks like a perfect spot to take a break before we continue," Parker suggested, glancing at the flowing water.

"Absolutely, I could use a drink," Amber replied, her eyes sparkling with excitement as she turned toward the stream. "A quick sip sounds delightful."

The pair knelt by the water's edge, lapping up the refreshing liquid before settling into a quiet glen nearby. As they took a moment to catch their breath, they noticed a lively gathering of dinosaurs on the opposite bank, sipping and feeding in the afternoon sun. Among them was a lively flock of swift Nanosaurus (NAN-oh-SORE-us), their emerald bodies adorned with striking brown spots. The males sported faded blue on their faces as they darted gracefully along the fringes, their quick movements a blur of energy.

Nearby, a colossal Stegosaurus (Steg-o-Saw-rus) milled about, its plated, spike-tipped tail held high. This gentle giant was a vivid light green, contrasting beautifully with darker markings across its back and formidable plates. A little further down the bank, beneath the shade of sweeping conifer trees, grazed a magnificent Brontosaurus (Bron-toe-Sore-us), its long neck stretching skyward to feast on the tender cedar leaves. This majestic herbivore flaunted a deep jungle green hue, accented with bold black spots and a soft, grey underbelly that exuded grandeur.

"Wow," Amber breathed, her eyes wide with awe. "I've never seen anything so remarkable in my entire life."

"I guess there aren't many dinosaurs where you come from?" Parker inquired, a knowing smile creeping across his face.

"Only if birds count as dinosaurs," Amber admitted, a hint of laughter in her tone.

"I think they absolutely do," Parker chuckled, delighting in her innocence.

As they relaxed beside the stream, laughter filled the air when, quite unexpectedly, a small primitive bird burst onto the scene. With bright yellow-green eyes sparkling with energy and a playful green scarf fluttering in the breeze, the Avisaurus (ay-vih-sore-us) swooped overhead. Its teal plumage shimmered against the sun, accentuated by elegant purple bands across its tail and wings, while its vibrant teal wing tips added flair to its agile flight. This lively creature, a dear friend of Parker's named Flap, was preoccupied with attempting to catch a hovering dragonfly.

"Hello, delicious!" Flap squawked eagerly, his eyes locked on the insect. "Time for my feast!"

Just as he prepared to snatch the delicate creature, a nearby frog unleashed its lightning-fast tongue, capturing the dragonfly in one swift motion. The startled Avisaurus crashed into the water, sending droplets spraying everywhere. The frog croaked triumphantly, making a hasty retreat as Flap emerged from the stream, feathers dripping and droopy.

"Maybe I should just settle for frog legs instead," Flap sighed dramatically, shaking off the water as he clambered out of the stream to dry off.

Once he regained his composure, Flap fluttered up to a sturdy branch and spotted Parker, a wide grin spreading across his face.

"Hey there, Flap!" Parker called out, waving enthusiastically to his feathered companion.

"Hi, Parker!" Flap replied, his tone cheerful. "What's happening, my down-to-earth buddy?"

"I'm introducing a new friend to the wonders of Jurassica," Parker said, gesturing toward Amber. "This is Amber, and she's joining us on our journey."

"It's a pleasure to meet you," Amber smiled warmly, extending her hand toward the small bird.

"Likewise!" Flap chirped, his excitement evident. "Could I tag along? This stream seems devoid of insects today."

"Of course!" Parker shrugged nonchalantly. "We could definitely use an extra pair of eyes in the sky on our adventure."

"Alright then!" Flap exclaimed, his wings flapping with renewed energy. "Lead the way!"

With Flap enthusiastically joining their ranks, Parker and Amber set off once more, diving into the rich tapestry of life and wonder that was Jurassica, ready for whatever surprises awaited them in this magnificent lost world.
