Chapter 9 - The Weight of the Ring(SERA POV)

The air in the living room seemed to thicken, pressing against my skin like a physical weight. Every tick of the grandfather clock in the corner sounded unnervingly loud, a rhythmic intrusion into the fragile silence Lorenzo and I shared. He stood before me, his presence imposing, his eyes cool, guarded, and unreadable fixed upon mine.

I could see the subtle shift in his posture, the way his jaw tightened ever so slightly, as if he were parsing through the layers of my request. I had asked him, with as much courage as I could muster, "We know you and Eirlys hate us... but can we just be good with each other, like support each other, as we are going to be a family...?"

The tension was electric, a dormant storm waiting for a reason to break. Lorenzo looked at me then, his gaze heavy with the weight of our fractured history. It was a look that seemed to dissect my intent, stripping away the royal protocol to see if there was any sincerity beneath.

Before he could offer a response, be it a scathing dismissal or a begrudging nod of acceptance, the heavy oak doors groaned on their hinges and burst open.

My parents swept into the room, a flurry of royal concern and frantic energy. My mother's eyes darted between us, her sharp gaze analyzing our faces before it snagged on the fine fabric of the coat I still held—Lorenzo's coat, draped over my arm. A knowing, playful light flickered in her eyes, and I felt the heat rise from my collar, painting my cheeks a frantic crimson. I looked away, desperately trying to mask my embarrassment.

"Oh, my children, are you okay? Are you hurt, Prince Lorenzo?" my mother asked, her eyes darting between us.

Lorenzo straightened, his voice as smooth and polished as marble. "No one got hurt, Queen of the South."

It was a practiced deception, a lie so elegant it felt like truth. We stood there, unified in our silence regarding the true horrors of the day, the hidden transformation of Eirlys and the impossible healing of my arm.

"Oh, I am glad, no one got hurt, dear," my mother sighed, finally settling onto the sofa with an air of relief. My father followed, his regal posture relaxing as he took his seat.

"Take good care of yourselves," he added, his voice steady.

"Yes, Father," I murmured.

"Yes, King of the South," Lorenzo echoed.

The synchronization of our voices felt like a jarring reminder of the charade we were now forced to play. A fresh wave of heat climbed up my neck, and I moved quickly to retreat. I pressed the coat into Lorenzo's hands, my fingers brushing against the cool, dark fabric. "I will go to my room," I stammered, bowing quickly to him and my parents. "I just remembered I have some work to finish."

I practically fled the room, my footsteps muffled by the velvet rugs, until I reached the sanctuary of my quarters, right next to Eirlys's door.

Inside, I wasted no time. I crossed to my desk and retrieved the girdle pouch, the weight of the ring inside it feeling heavier than usual. I locked the door, sliding the bolt home with a satisfying click, and slipped the ring onto my finger.

The world tilted on its axis.

A sharp, searing sting exploded behind my eyes, white-hot and agonizing. I gasped, stumbling backward as the floor beneath me seemed to liquefy. I squeezed my eyes shut, my breath catching in my throat, only to open them a heartbeat later to a sight that defied reality.

The familiar walls of my room were gone. I was standing upon an endless expanse of swirling, ethereal clouds, the sky above a shifting canvas of twilight colors. Ahead, framed by the vastness, stood a massive, weathered stone circle. And there, standing in the center, was Helena.

"Helena?" I breathed, my voice sounding thin and hollow in the vast, silent space.

"Sera. It's an urgent matter. The other creatures, they are going to be awakened in a short time," she said, her voice resonating in my very marrow.

"Oh," I said, my confusion mounting. "So, do I have to do something?"

"Yes," she replied, her tone sharpening to a razor's edge. "I need you to learn your powers now. You must awaken them, and you must learn to control them. You must master this before the snakes are imprisoned by someone else. You are their ruler, Sera."

"What? Fine, but how will I awaken my powers? And control them?" I asked, my heart hammering against my ribs.

Helena's gaze intensified, her posture radiating a dangerous, ancient power. "That is why I summoned you here. You will of course have to practice it, just like I will instruct you, Sera. So, look closely."

And little did I know, I would become completely different.....
