Chapter 4 - The Measure of a Blessing

Five currents of impossible light moved beneath the Origin Well, each one cutting a deliberate path through the immense darkness toward the candidates standing along its edge. More than one hundred and fifty thousand spectators watched from the rising tiers of the amphitheater, yet no applause, conversation, or restless movement disturbed the ceremonial ground. The crowd had fallen silent beneath the same instinctive understanding that held Liam Vale motionless in Group Fourteen: whatever approached the first five candidates had existed long before the government surrounded it with platforms, holographic projectors, observation stations, and armed security.

The currents reached the contact plates simultaneously. They did not spill across the boundary like water. Each stream rose in a narrow column, curved toward its chosen candidate, and passed through clothing and flesh without leaving either wet or burned. The five candidates stiffened as their awareness appeared to withdraw from the amphitheater. Their eyes remained open, but none seemed capable of seeing the thousands of people staring back at them.

Only after the Origin Well established the five connections did the government's instruments activate.

Six empty sections appeared within five enormous holograms suspended above the ceremonial field. The displays were duplicated throughout the amphitheater so that even the highest spectators could read them. Smaller versions formed near every candidate group and within the government observation pavilions.

The presiding official stepped forward upon the central platform. "The first five candidates of Group One will serve as the instructional Awakening for today's ceremony," the official announced. "Their readings will demonstrate the information that will be displayed after every successful connection with the Origin Well."

The official raised one hand, and the first section of every hologram brightened.

"Candidate Name will always appear first," the official explained. "The Origin Well recognizes the individual rather than the registration number assigned for the ceremony. Every reading will therefore begin with the candidate's verified legal name."

Liam stared at the blank first section of the nearest hologram. Facility Forty-Seven had spent ten years reducing him to 47-2186, but when his turn arrived, the amphitheater would not see the number stitched into his work clothes. It would see Liam Vale.

The second section illuminated.

"Blessing Name will appear next," the official continued. "The name identifies the unique supernatural authority awakened within the candidate. Similar manifestations do not indicate identical Blessings. Every Blessing possesses its own structure, limitations, Functions, and evolutionary potential."

A third section brightened beneath it.

"Blessing Current Divine Rank will follow the Blessing Name," the official said. "This represents the Blessing's present stage of development at the exact moment the reading is recorded."

The fourth section illuminated.

"Major Functions are the primary supernatural expressions of a Blessing," the official explained. "Every Major Function will be numbered. Functions available at Awakening will display their names. Functions that exist within the Blessing but remain locked will display a single question mark."

The fifth section brightened.

"Minor Functions are supporting expressions, specialized applications, passive traits, or secondary abilities derived from the Blessing's greater structure," the official continued. "They will be numbered and displayed under the same rule. An unlocked Minor Function will be named. A locked Minor Function will remain concealed behind a question mark."

The final section illuminated last.

"Blessing Ceiling represents the highest Divine Rank the Origin Well presently judges the Blessing capable of reaching," the official announced. "A ceiling is not a guarantee of advancement. It is a measurement of potential. Higher ceilings generally correspond with larger and more complex collections of Major and Minor Functions, although the relationship is not absolute. Function count alone does not determine the quality, danger, or future value of a Blessing."

A murmur moved through the amphitheater. Families leaned toward the holograms. Recruiters prepared their slates. Government representatives watched the empty Function sections and the final line with equal intensity.

The first connection intensified.

Transparent rings formed around the candidate standing at Group One, Position One. The rings compressed the air as they expanded, driving dust away from the contact plate in perfect circles. The young man's uniform pressed tightly against his body, and the spectators nearest the ground recoiled when the final ring struck the barrier separating them from the ceremonial field.

His hologram filled from top to bottom.

CANDIDATE NAME: ELIAN MARR

BLESSING NAME: PRESSURE CHOIR

BLESSING CURRENT DIVINE RANK: SEED

MAJOR FUNCTIONS

1. COMPRESSION RING

2. ?

3. ?

4. ?

MINOR FUNCTIONS

1. BREATH RESERVE

2. PRESSURE TOLERANCE

3. ?

BLESSING CEILING: TIDE

The crowd applauded, but the government officials remained seated. Several entered notes into their slates while others studied the controlled symmetry of the compressed air and the number of locked Functions concealed within Elian's Blessing.

The presiding official gestured toward the completed reading. "Candidate Elian Marr's hologram demonstrates the full sequence," the official said. "Four Major Functions and three Minor Functions have been identified within Pressure Choir. One Major Function and two Minor Functions are currently unlocked. The remaining Functions exist, but their names and capabilities will remain concealed until the Blessing develops enough to release them."

The candidate at Position Two awakened next. The pale stone beneath her feet softened without cracking. It moved like dense liquid, rising around the soles of her boots before becoming solid again. The woman's face tightened with panic, but the Origin Well maintained its connection until the transformation ended.

Her hologram appeared.

CANDIDATE NAME: NERA SOL

BLESSING NAME: STONEWAKE

BLESSING CURRENT DIVINE RANK: SEED

MAJOR FUNCTIONS

1. LITHIC SOFTENING

2. ?

3. ?

MINOR FUNCTIONS

1. GROUND SENSE

2. ?

BLESSING CEILING: FLOW

The crowd's response was quieter than it had been for Elian, but the government's reaction was stronger. Analysts inside two observation pavilions stood to obtain a better view of the altered contact plate. Although Stonewake possessed fewer total Functions than Pressure Choir, its ability to change the state of solid material appeared to concern the officials more than the audience understood.

The candidate at Position Three produced no immediate spectacle. His body remained still, and for several seconds, the spectators seemed uncertain whether his Awakening had failed. Then the young man turned sharply toward the eastern tiers and covered both ears. His eyes moved from one distant sound to another, tracking conversations, footsteps, machinery, and heartbeats no ordinary person could have separated across such an enormous space.

His reading appeared above him.

CANDIDATE NAME: ORIN KEEL

BLESSING NAME: FAR ECHO

BLESSING CURRENT DIVINE RANK: SEED

MAJOR FUNCTIONS

1. DISTANT RESONANCE

2. RESONANT TRACE

3. ?

4. ?

5. ?

MINOR FUNCTIONS

1. ACOUSTIC FILTERING

2. VIBRATION SENSE

3. DIRECTIONAL HEARING

4. ?

BLESSING CEILING: DEEP

The amphitheater fell silent again as the significance of the ceiling and Function count reached the audience. What had appeared to be the least impressive Awakening of the first three had revealed the greatest potential so far.

A woman standing beside Liam in Group Fourteen shifted closer to him. Her wristband identified her as Position Sixty-One, placing her immediately before him in their eventual set.

"I wish they would hide the ceiling," the woman whispered, keeping her eyes fixed upon Orin's hologram. "Everyone sees one word and decides they understand the rest of your life."

Liam watched officials gathering near Orin's classification route before answering her. "The spectators decide what they think you should become. The officials decide which doors you are permitted to use afterward."

The woman looked toward the guarded passages. "That was not comforting," she murmured.

"It was not intended to be," Liam replied.

At Position Four, translucent plates formed around a broad-shouldered candidate named Tessa Vey. The plates overlapped from her feet to her head, creating a layered shell that caught the morning light like transparent armor. When one plate struck another, the force traveled through the entire structure and vanished without reaching her body.

Her hologram unfolded.

CANDIDATE NAME: TESSA VEY

BLESSING NAME: LAYERED AEGIS

BLESSING CURRENT DIVINE RANK: SEED

MAJOR FUNCTIONS

1. BASTION PLATES

2. IMPACT REDIRECTION

MINOR FUNCTIONS

1. IMPACT DISPERSION

2. STRUCTURAL AWARENESS

3. PLATE RECALL

4. ?

5. ?

6. ?

BLESSING CEILING: HORIZON

The amphitheater erupted.

Tessa did not celebrate. Her gaze had settled upon the military representatives rising inside the western pavilion. Layered Aegis had revealed seven Major Functions and six Minor Functions, and even with most of them still locked, the government's interest was immediate.

The protective plates vanished, but the fear in Tessa's expression remained.

The current beneath Position Five hesitated.

Unlike the others, it circled beneath the candidate without rising. The young man looked toward the presiding official, but before either could speak, the current surged upward and struck him with enough force to throw his arms wide.

The air around the contact plate distorted. Loose objects lifted from the ground, stopped in midair, and shot outward in different directions. One ceremonial instrument tore free from its mounting and hurtled toward the officials' platform.

Guards raised their weapons.

"Hold your positions," the presiding official ordered. "No one will interrupt an active connection."

The instrument stopped less than a hand's width from the platform. It remained suspended for one breath before reversing direction and slamming into the ground hard enough to split its casing.

The fifth hologram appeared.

CANDIDATE NAME: JOREN PIKE

BLESSING NAME: UNBOUND VECTOR

BLESSING CURRENT DIVINE RANK: SEED

MAJOR FUNCTIONS

1. KINETIC REVERSAL

2. VECTOR ARREST

3. ?

4. ?

9. ?

10. ?

MINOR FUNCTIONS

1. MOMENTUM SENSE

2. DIRECTIONAL ANCHORING

3. FORCE TOLERANCE

4. ?

5. ?

6. ?

7. ?

BLESSING CEILING: PARAGON

The reaction that followed was not immediate applause. Government personnel moved between pavilions, military representatives began issuing orders, and additional guards gathered near the classification passage assigned to Joren. Unbound Vector possessed ten Major Functions and seven Minor Functions, most of which remained locked. The unknown capabilities appeared to concern the officials almost as much as the two Major Functions that had already revealed themselves.

The Origin Well released all five candidates.

Elian remained standing, though his breathing had become unsteady. Nera fell to her knees and stared at the stone beneath her boots. Orin continued covering his ears until a medical attendant secured a dampening device around his head. Tessa allowed herself to be guided away without looking toward the cheering spectators. Joren required four guards, although he offered no resistance.

The holograms remained visible until the five candidates passed beyond the medical enclosure. Then each reading dissolved from the bottom upward, beginning with the Blessing Ceiling and ending with the Candidate Name.

Liam watched the separate passages receive them. Elian and Nera were taken through ordinary classification doors. Orin was escorted toward a secured medical assessment. Military officers waited for Tessa. Joren disappeared behind a reinforced barrier surrounded by armed guards.

The woman at Position Sixty-One followed Liam's gaze. "They have not even spoken to him yet," she said casually, more observation than concern.

Liam watched the reinforced barrier close behind Joren. "They do not need to," he answered. "Seventeen Functions and a Paragon ceiling already said enough."

The presiding official waited until the contact stations had been cleared. "The instructional Awakening is complete," the official announced. "The ceremony will now proceed through the established rotation."

Two sections of the Group One field illuminated.

"Group One, Positions Six through Ten, advance to the Origin Well," the official called.

Five candidates left the preparation area and walked toward the newly emptied contact plates.

"Group One, Positions Eleven through Fifteen, report to preparation," the official continued.

The following five candidates separated from the main formation. Officials scanned their wristbands, verified their identities, and arranged them in numerical order while Positions Six through Ten took their places beside the Well.

The system moved with controlled efficiency. Five candidates awakened while the next five prepared. When the current set completed its readings, medical personnel removed them, the prepared candidates advanced, and another set left the main formation.

Positions Sixteen through Twenty gathered while Eleven through Fifteen awakened. Positions Twenty-One through Twenty-Five prepared while Sixteen through Twenty stood before the Origin Well. The process continued without allowing Group Two to move.

Every hologram displayed the same sequence. Candidate Name. Blessing Name. Blessing Current Divine Rank. Major Functions. Minor Functions. Blessing Ceiling.

Every Function appeared with a number.

Every unlocked Function displayed a name.

Every locked Function displayed only a question mark.

Hours began collecting around the Origin Well.

One candidate produced a spectacular storm of silver sparks but received only three Major Functions, two Minor Functions, and a Blessing Ceiling of Basin. Another candidate whose shadow merely shifted against the direction of the sun possessed nine Major Functions, seven Minor Functions, and a Blessing Ceiling of Celestial.

The correlation between ceiling and Function count became obvious without becoming perfectly predictable. Higher ceilings usually carried broader Function structures, but some Blessings developed through a smaller number of exceptionally powerful authorities. Others possessed longer lists of specialized Minor Functions supporting fewer Major Functions.

Families celebrated, wept, or fell into stunned silence. Recruiters filled their slates. Government officials changed candidate escorts before the newly awakened individuals had fully recovered.

By the time Group One, Positions Ninety-Six through One Hundred, approached the Origin Well, the sun had moved far beyond the highest eastern seats. The final five completed their readings, and the presiding official confirmed that all one hundred candidates in Group One had awakened.

Only then was Group Two called.

The ceremony maintained the same order through the afternoon. Group Two completed all twenty sets before Group Three began. Group Three finished before Group Four moved. Water was distributed among the waiting candidates, and attendants permitted them to sit within their assigned positions whenever their group remained several hours from being called.

Liam used the time to study the reactions that mattered. The crowd valued spectacle. Families watched ceilings. Government officials watched Function totals, unlocked names, and locked question marks.

No pattern connected them perfectly.

The Origin Well gave similar Blessings different ceilings. It revealed quiet abilities with terrifying potential and violent manifestations whose growth would end at lower ranks. Liam could diagnose a machine by isolating the wrong vibration within thousands of moving parts, but the ceremony offered him no dependable sound of failure.

Group Seven produced a Blessing Ceiling of Ascendant. The hologram displayed twelve Major Functions and ten Minor Functions, although only one Major Function and three Minor Functions had unlocked at Seed.

The entire amphitheater rose.

The candidate began crying before the hologram finished displaying the locked Functions. Government personnel surrounded her before the Origin Well released the connection.

The woman at Position Sixty-One watched the escort close around the candidate. "Everyone is cheering for her," she said.

Liam looked toward the sealed transport waiting beyond the classification pavilion. "They are cheering because they do not have to leave through her door," he replied.

As the groups advanced, Liam occasionally saw Marcus within Group Fifteen. Marcus remained at Position Forty-Three, maintaining his usual outward calm while carefully watching each candidate vanish into classification. Several positions beyond him stood a blonde-haired woman Liam did not recognize.

Paisley Vale had noticed Liam again.

From the distance separating Groups Fourteen and Fifteen, the silvery white-haired candidate looked nothing like the brother preserved within her memory. Liam had been eight years old when she last saw him, and Paisley had been ten and a half. The boy she remembered had moved impulsively, clung to her in crowds, and reacted before caution could restrain him.

The stranger in Group Fourteen stood with unnatural control. He protected an injured hand without drawing attention to it and studied guards more often than he studied the holograms. Those details didn't really match what she remembered, but they also didn't feel important enough to dwell on.

That small mismatch was enough to make her look twice, then look away, then look back again.

She had mistaken strangers for Liam before. Not often, but enough that she didn't trust the first impression anymore. So she simply watched a little longer than she meant to, without saying anything.

If the candidate was not Liam, it was just another false alarm.

If he was Liam, then ten years had simply made him harder to recognize.

A few positions away, Marcus noticed Paisley's repeated glances and assumed she was watching a friend or relative. He gave the matter no further thought.

Group Ten finished as the sun began lowering behind the amphitheater. Group Eleven followed. Then Group Twelve entered the rotation, and the waiting candidates rose from the stone as attendants ordered the remaining formations back into place.

By the time Group Thirteen's final set approached the Origin Well, the ceremonial ground had turned gold beneath the descending light. The holograms remained bright above the vast darkness, and the Origin Well continued accepting candidates without any visible sign of exhaustion.

Group Fourteen, Positions One through Five, were moved into preparation.

Liam watched their wristbands being scanned. Position Sixty-One stood beside him with her arms folded tightly across her chest. His own turn would come with Positions Sixty-One through Sixty-Five, the thirteenth set of Group Fourteen. Twelve sets still separated him from the Well.

Across the adjacent formation, Paisley looked toward him again, briefly, before officials shifted the line and broke her view.

The five currents surrounding Group Thirteen's final candidates withdrew into the Origin Well. Their holograms faded, and medical teams led them away from the contact stations.

The presiding official waited until the final candidate crossed into classification. Then his voice carried across the amphitheater.

"Group Thirteen is complete," the official announced.

The preparation gates before Group Fourteen opened.

The first five position markers illuminated.

"Group Fourteen, Positions One through Five, advance to the Origin Well," the official called.
