Chapter 50 - The Bloodhunt Begins

The night did not remain quiet for long.

High above the Bloodheart valley, storm clouds began gathering like dark mountains drifting across the sky. The moon faded behind them, leaving the land beneath in a dim red twilight cast by the countless lanterns burning across the vampire city.

Wind swept down from the eastern mountains.

Cold.

Sharp.

Carrying with it a scent that most of the people inside Bloodheart castle could not recognize.

But Kael could.

And so could Ashfang.

The wolf's head lifted slowly as they stood together on the western battlement of the castle walls. His golden eyes narrowed toward the distant darkness beyond the valley.

The wind shifted again.

Ashfang's lips pulled back slightly.

"Blood," the wolf growled.

Kael didn't answer immediately.

Because he could feel it too.

Not through smell.

Through the system.

---

The crimson subsystem pulsed beneath his chest again.

The sensation had grown stronger since the council meeting earlier that evening. At first it had been faint—like a quiet ripple moving across a still lake.

Now it felt like waves crashing against stone.

Kael closed his eyes.

The system responded instantly.

---

[Subsystem Active: Crimson Authority]

[Blood Sense Engaged]

[Signal Expansion Detected]

---

Darkness flooded his mind.

Then the threads appeared.

Thin crimson strands stretching outward from his awareness, spreading across the valley and into the distant forests.

Each thread represented a mark.

Each mark represented something under a controller's authority.

The signals multiplied.

Five.

Ten.

Twenty.

Then they exploded outward like a spreading wildfire.

Hundreds.

Kael's eyes snapped open.

Ashfang immediately stepped closer.

"What see?"

Kael's voice remained calm.

But his eyes had hardened.

"They're coming."

---

Behind them, the battlement door slammed open.

Izazel strode onto the wall with the confident stride of someone who had grown up surrounded by war.

His crimson cloak snapped sharply in the wind as he approached.

"I felt the ripple."

Kael didn't turn.

"You would."

Izazel followed his gaze toward the eastern mountains.

"What do you see?"

Kael answered quietly.

"An army."

---

The word carried weight.

Izazel didn't laugh.

He didn't question it.

Instead, he leaned against the stone wall and crossed his arms.

"How large?"

Kael closed his eyes again.

The threads expanded further.

Signals moved through forests.

Across hills.

Through the narrow mountain pass that formed the eastern entrance to Bloodheart territory.

More.

More.

More.

When Kael opened his eyes again…

There was no doubt.

"Hundreds of beasts."

A pause.

"Multiple controllers."

Izazel exhaled slowly.

"…Good."

Kael glanced at him.

"You call that good?"

Izazel smiled faintly.

"I call it honest."

The prince turned toward the castle behind them.

"The Crimson Cull has finally decided to stop testing us."

His voice grew sharper.

"And start fighting."

---

Inside the castle, the war bells began to ring.

Deep bronze bells hung along the fortress towers, their sound rolling across the valley like thunder as Bloodheart soldiers rushed to their posts.

Torches flared to life along the outer walls.

Gates slammed shut.

Archers filled the watchtowers.

The quiet elegance of vampire nobility vanished in moments, replaced by something far more ancient.

Preparation.

War.

Kael watched the transformation silently.

He had seen soldiers before.

Bandits.

Slave traders.

Hunters.

But this was different.

Bloodheart warriors moved with terrifying discipline.

No panic.

No shouting.

Only swift, precise movement.

Within minutes, the castle had become a fortress.

---

Dormon Bloodheart stepped onto the battlement.

The ancient vampire lord wore armor now.

Black metal etched with thin crimson lines that pulsed faintly with blood magic.

His presence alone seemed to steady the soldiers nearby.

"What do we face?"

Kael answered.

"The Crimson Cull."

Dormon's eyes shifted eastward.

"Yes."

"I suspected as much."

Izazel gestured toward the mountains.

"They've sent beasts."

Dormon nodded.

"They always do."

His voice remained calm.

"The controllers will follow behind them."

Kael frowned slightly.

"They use beasts as the first wave."

"Correct."

Dormon placed both hands on the battlement stone.

"Marked beasts are expendable."

His crimson eyes darkened slightly.

"They send them to weaken defenses."

Kael nodded slowly.

"That matches what I'm sensing."

---

The wind shifted again.

This time stronger.

And with it came a sound.

Low.

Distant.

But unmistakable.

A howl.

Then another.

And another.

The forests beyond the eastern pass erupted with noise.

Roars.

Growls.

Shrieks.

Hundreds of beasts answering a silent command.

Ashfang's ears flattened slightly.

"Many hunters."

Kael's expression didn't change.

"Yes."

---

Then something happened that none of the Bloodheart soldiers expected.

Kael stepped forward.

Not toward the castle.

Toward the wall.

Toward the battlefield.

Dormon watched him carefully.

"You intend to fight."

Kael answered simply.

"Yes."

Izazel smirked slightly.

"Good."

Kael closed his eyes once more.

But this time he didn't reach for the crimson subsystem.

He reached for something older.

Something that had been quiet since they entered the Bloodheart valley.

The Vermin Network.

---

[Vermin System Active]

[Territory Link Reestablished]

[Network Synchronization Initiated]

---

Far away.

Deep within the forests surrounding Bloodheart territory…

Something stirred.

Rats emerged from tunnels.

Insects crawled from bark and stone.

Serpents lifted their heads from beneath fallen leaves.

The network awakened slowly.

Thousands of tiny lives responding to the silent call of their sovereign.

The ground itself seemed to breathe.

Izazel felt it first.

His eyes widened slightly.

"…What is that?"

Kael didn't answer.

Because the system was still expanding.

---

The network spread across the valley floor.

Across fields.

Across rivers.

Across hidden caves and root systems.

Creatures moved.

Listening.

Watching.

Waiting.

Then the interface flickered again.

---

[Territory Expansion Detected]

[Vermin Authority Strengthening]

[Domain Resonance Increasing]

---

Kael exhaled slowly.

The connection felt stronger here.

Stronger than it had felt in Libertas.

Dormon noticed immediately.

"Your authority grows."

Kael nodded.

"Territory."

Dormon smiled faintly.

"Yes."

The ancient vampire lord understood immediately.

"The larger the domain…"

Kael finished the sentence quietly.

"…the stronger the sovereign."

---

Below the castle walls, the first shadows emerged from the forest.

Wolves.

Dozens of them.

Their eyes glowed crimson beneath the storm-dark sky.

More shapes followed.

Massive bears.

Serpents.

Boars.

All marked.

All controlled.

The beasts did not charge immediately.

They spread outward instead.

Forming a wide arc across the valley.

Encircling the fortress.

Ashfang growled low in his throat.

"Too many."

Kael remained calm.

"Yes."

Then he spoke softly.

"Good."

Izazel raised an eyebrow.

"You're enjoying this."

Kael's eyes gleamed faintly in the torchlight.

"No."

He looked toward the army gathering below.

"I'm learning."

---

The system pulsed again.

A new notification flickered across his vision.

---

[New Domain Condition Detected]

[Large-Scale Conflict Zone]

[Authority Amplification Possible]

---

Kael understood immediately.

War zones strengthened authority.

Conflict generated control opportunities.

The battlefield itself became part of the system.

He smiled slightly.

Very slightly.

Izazel noticed.

"That look worries me."

Kael glanced at him.

"You wanted honest war."

Izazel chuckled.

"Yes."

Kael looked back toward the approaching beasts.

"Well."

The first wolves began moving forward.

Slow.

Measured.

Eyes burning red.

Behind them, larger creatures pushed through the trees.

Hundreds now.

The valley floor trembled under their combined movement.

Archers along the walls drew their bows.

Bloodheart soldiers tightened their grips on spears.

Dormon raised one hand.

"Wait."

The army held.

The beasts continued advancing.

Closer.

Closer.

Closer.

Then Kael stepped onto the edge of the battlement.

And spoke one word.

"Rise."

---

Across the valley floor…

The ground exploded.

Rats surged from tunnels like living waves.

Serpents erupted from beneath rocks.

Insects filled the air in dark clouds.

Thousands.

No.

Tens of thousands.

The vermin network flooded the battlefield.

The Bloodheart soldiers stared in stunned silence.

Izazel burst into laughter.

"Oh."

His eyes gleamed with excitement.

"This is going to be fun."

Below the castle walls…

The vermin army met the marked beasts head-on.

And the first battle of the Crimson War began.
