Chapter 73 - Shadow Desperation

The Ten Families did not sleep peacefully that night.

Valerius had bowed.

Crimson had fallen.

Frostveil had aligned.

And Cael stood as Axis.

Which meant one thing:

If he continued rising, the old world would disappear.

And the first to panic…

Was Noctis.

The Decision in the Dark

Deep beneath their ancestral grounds, within halls untouched by light, the Noctis elders gathered.

The chamber was carved from black stone that absorbed sound.

"The Axis cannot be allowed to consolidate further," one elder whispered.

"He has Valerius recognition and Frostveil loyalty," another replied. "If Helior publicly endorses him next, we lose leverage permanently."

Silence.

Then a colder voice spoke.

"Then we remove what strengthens him."

The room darkened further.

"Not Cael?"

"No. He is watched now. Protected. Expected."

A pause.

"Then who?"

"The Frostveil heiress."

The shadows thickened.

Phase Black: Final Variant

This would not be an arena attempt.

Not a political maneuver.

Not a public confrontation.

This would be an eradication.

They activated an ancient Noctis technique — one never used outside internal purges.

Shadow Burial Formation.

Not assassination.

Erasure.

Target isolated from space, swallowed by layered darkness, existence suppressed.

No evidence.

No war.

No trace.

Frostveil Alone

Selina stood on a high terrace overlooking the academy grounds.

The night air was quiet.

Frost drifted softly around her.

She sensed nothing at first.

Then—

The stars disappeared.

One by one.

Not clouds.

Absence.

The air cooled unnaturally.

Not her frost.

Something else.

Her instincts sharpened.

"Show yourselves," she said calmly.

No response.

The ground beneath her terrace dissolved into shadow.

Darkness surged upward like liquid.

Her frost exploded outward in defense.

Ice spears formed instantly, freezing the air.

But the darkness swallowed them silently.

Then the world went silent.

No sound.

No wind.

No light.

Shadow Burial had activated.

The Trap Closes

Layers of darkness wrapped around her like a coffin.

Her frost aura strained.

Ice cracked under invisible pressure.

This wasn't an attack.

It was suppression.

Isolation.

A whisper echoed:

"You aligned with the Axis."

"You become correction."

Her frost shattered violently, but the shadows reformed.

Selina clenched her fists.

"I am Frostveil!"

Glacial power surged outward in a massive explosion—

And vanished into black.

For the first time—

She felt suffocated.

Axis Responds

Far across the academy grounds—

Crimson threads snapped violently.

Cael stopped mid-step.

His eyes sharpened instantly.

Not anger.

Precision.

The relic shards pulsed without him calling.

The ancient presence beneath the arena stirred again.

"They moved," Cael said quietly.

He didn't run.

He stepped forward once—

And vanished.

Inside the Burial

Selina's frost was weakening.

Shadow Burial tightened.

Her breath grew heavier.

The world narrowed.

Then—

A thin crimson line appeared in the darkness.

Not cutting.

Anchoring.

Another line followed.

Then a third.

The shadows trembled.

A calm voice echoed through the burial chamber.

"You should have learned."

Crimson threads spread like veins across the darkness.

Not attacking.

Stabilizing the suppressed space.

Shadow Burial cracked.

Noctis operatives hidden within the void panicked.

"He entered the formation?!"

"That's impossible—"

Cael stepped fully into the Burial.

Inside their domain.

Untouched.

The darkness tried to swallow him.

It failed.

The Correction

Crimson threads extended outward.

They latched onto the layered shadows.

Not tearing.

Rewriting.

The Burial formation began turning against its creators.

Noctis operatives screamed as their own shadows rejected them.

"You don't erase what stabilizes balance," Cael said quietly.

"You erase instability."

Selina collapsed to one knee as the pressure vanished.

Her frost returned instantly, stabilizing around her.

The shadows imploded.

Silence returned.

The night sky reappeared.

Stars restored.

Public Exposure

But this time—

Cael did not allow it to stay hidden.

Crimson threads surged skyward.

A projection of the Shadow Burial formation manifested above the academy.

Every Ten Family saw it.

Every elder recognized it.

Noctis had violated law.

Attempted eradication of a Great Family heiress.

Helior's staff flared instantly.

Stormveil rose to attention.

Valerius eyes hardened.

Noctis had just isolated themselves completely.

Aftermath

Selina stood slowly.

"You came immediately," she said quietly.

"Yes," Cael replied.

Her frost softened slightly.

"They'll be forced to answer for this."

"Yes."

He turned his gaze toward the distant shadowed territories.

"And this time… correction will not be subtle."
