Chapter 50 - The Forest’s Test

The moon rose over the hunting grounds, silver light piercing the thick canopy. Shadows twisted and shifted unnaturally in the fading light. The forest had changed; the opening chaos of the day had given way to a deeper, more sinister challenge. Mana currents flowed in unpredictable patterns, and monsters that had lain dormant now stirred with heightened aggression.

Cael moved calmly, his dark cloak brushing the forest floor. Every step was deliberate. His crimson eyes scanned the subtle glimmers of mana, detecting the faintest shifts in life force and threat potential. His blood hummed beneath his skin, extending invisible threads through the underbrush, probing the air, the earth, and even the forest itself.

Behind him, the Frostveil heiress followed cautiously. Her ice sigils shimmered faintly, reacting to latent threats she could sense but not fully anticipate. Each time danger approached, she glanced at him, expecting acknowledgment or guidance—but there was none. He simply acted before she could even comprehend the threat.

The Families Escalate

The Top Ten Families had grown impatient. Subtle interference had failed to eliminate or significantly hinder the boy, and now they decided that more direct measures were necessary.

Crimson Order: The descendant of the betrayer had begun moving closer to set a personal ambush. He knew subtle attacks would no longer work. His blood-infused mana would be enough to challenge Cael if timed correctly.

Stormveil House: Lightning mages descended from the cliffs, sending arcs of energy toward rival students, hoping to disorient and eliminate them.

Ironheart Union: Heavy defensive constructs were placed along key paths, intending to trap students in lethal choke points.

Noctis Family: Shadow manipulators moved silently, attempting to ambush competitors from blind spots.

Cael detected them all. Threads of his blood moved invisibly, redirecting attacks, neutralizing traps, and subtly manipulating the flow of combat. Students and monsters alike found their movements subtly influenced by him, often without realizing why they were failing or succeeding.

The First Direct Threat

The Frostveil heiress had moved too close to one of the Stormveil mages' lightning arcs, her ice sigils absorbing most of the impact but not completely. The energy scorched her cloak and singed her hair.

Before she could react further, Cael extended crimson threads, manipulating the lightning's trajectory and redirecting it harmlessly into the canopy. The heiress turned, stunned.

"You…" she whispered, her voice trembling. "Again…"

Cael did not pause, did not turn. His eyes glimmered faintly crimson. "Move faster," he said simply.

Her curiosity and admiration deepened. Every intervention was precise, lethal to threats, and entirely indifferent to her presence. She could not understand why someone so powerful would care so little about attention or praise, yet she felt drawn to him more strongly than ever.

Monster Ambush

As they moved deeper into the forest, the organizers triggered a monster ambush. A pack of mana wolves, larger and more vicious than any seen earlier, emerged from the shadows. Their glowing eyes locked onto the nearest competitors, snarling and snapping.

Cael stepped forward, crimson threads snaking invisibly through the air. The wolves lunged, and in a series of movements too fast for the human eye, each wolf was redirected: some slammed into trees, others twisted mid-air to crash into rocks, and the rest were pinned to the ground by subtle manipulations of their blood and lifeforce.

The Frostveil heiress watched, stunned. How… how is he controlling them without even touching them?

Even rival students began to notice. Whispers ran like wildfire:

"It's not magic… it's his blood!"

"No one can move like that without being a master of life itself…"

"Even the top families would hesitate against him."

The Crimson Order Descendant's Ambush

Finally, the descendant of the betrayer struck. He appeared suddenly on a ridge above Cael, summoning a shadow-infused sigil designed to sever Cael's blood manipulation temporarily.

Cael sensed it instantly. Threads of crimson blood snaked outward, neutralizing the attack mid-air. The descendant's sigil rebounded slightly, forcing him to retreat and recast.

"You're predictable," Cael said, voice calm, crimson aura flaring subtly. "Do not test me again."

The descendant's jaw clenched. This boy… he is untouchable. But I will find a way.

He retreated silently, vowing to strike personally at the right moment.

Strategic Saves

Throughout the evening, the Frostveil heiress encountered multiple near-fatal situations.

A hidden trap activated beneath her feet—a mana-constricting root system designed to crush and immobilize. Cael intervened without looking, manipulating the roots to ensnare rival students instead.

A venomous serpent lunged from a shadowed crevice. Crimson threads struck instantly, redirecting the attack without her noticing until it was over.

Another rogue monster, invisible until the last second, tried to pounce. Cael's subtle blood manipulation shifted its trajectory harmlessly, saving her again.

Each time, she could feel the pull of fascination, her admiration growing, yet he remained cold and indifferent. This only fueled her curiosity more.

The Forest's Deadliest Challenge

The final test of the day was a massive mana anomaly in the center of the forest. The ground itself shimmered with unstable energy, and massive boulders hovered mid-air, threatening to fall at any misstep. Monsters were drawn to the anomaly, their aggression amplified.

Cael assessed the situation carefully. Threads of crimson blood spread through the area, manipulating momentum and energy subtly, redirecting falling boulders, controlling monster movements, and creating invisible safety zones for himself and others.

Even the Frostveil heiress, who followed closely, could not match the precision or calm. She realized, with a mixture of awe and frustration, that his power was beyond her comprehension, yet he remained entirely uninterested in her presence.

Tensions Rise

The Top Ten Families had noticed the junior's dominance. His calm precision, unmatched power, and indifference to social dynamics made him a threat to their long-standing hierarchy.

The Crimson Order descendant was seething, planning a personal showdown.

Stormveil House and Ironheart Union quietly recalculated their strategies, realizing subtlety would not suffice.

Even the Frostveil heiress, whose fascination had grown into a quiet obsession, recognized that he was not someone anyone could control or sway easily.

For now, the forest fell into relative quiet as the monsters were cleared, but the tension hung thick in the air. The junior—Cael—was no longer just a competitor. He had become a force that challenged every expectation, every plan, and every elite student in the forest.

Foreshadowing the Next Day

As night fell, the moonlight reflecting off the Frostveil heiress' icy sigils and the faint crimson glow from Cael's aura, it was clear that the coming days would escalate further.

The next stage would bring direct interference from the Top Ten Families.

Rivalries would intensify, particularly between Cael and the Crimson Order descendant.

Monster threats would grow exponentially, with environmental hazards testing every ounce of skill, speed, and strategy.

Yet Cael remained unshaken. His crimson eyes glimmered faintly in the moonlight as he moved forward, threads of blood weaving invisible paths through the forest. He was not concerned with admiration, curiosity, or interference. He was concerned only with survival, dominance, and proving that no force could touch him without consequence.

And somewhere in the shadows, the Frostveil heiress followed, drawn by fascination she could not explain, unaware that the junior who ignored her completely had already become the center of a storm no one could escape.
