They pushed past the second floor. They were swarming the third.
"Silas, blast them back!" I yelled, my arm burning from cranking the lever.
"I'm out of mana!" he screamed. "I need a potion!"
"We don't have potions!"
The lead Hobgoblin lunged at us. I swung my fire axe, catching it in the chest, but the force of the blow knocked me backwards. We were losing ground. There were too many of them.
Then, a sweet, sickly smell filled the air.
I looked down the stairs. The pumpkins.
They had swelled to the size of beach balls. They were vibrating so hard they blurred. The leading Hobgoblin stepped on a vine.
Click.
It wasn't a click of a machine. It was the click of a trigger.
"Cover your ears!" I dove behind the sofa.
BOOM.
It wasn't a firecracker. It was a depth charge. The explosion shook the entire building. Orange slime and pumpkin guts sprayed the walls. The shockwave blew the windows out of the third-floor landing.
