Chapter 1 - Bound by Duty

Keylin was the daughter of Cabriana, who was born on July 12, 2008, when her mother was just 16 years old. Keylin's father went missing on the day she was born. Her life took a turn for the worse when her mother married Tyson Andrewson, her stepfather, who had two twin daughters, Mindy and Emily.

One morning, Keylin woke up in her small basement room, gazing out the window at the beautiful view of children going to school, taxis honking, and happy families in the park. Her eyes then fell upon her own house, where there was no warmth or happiness. In the dining room, Cabriana and Tyson were having a heated argument.

"Where were you last night?" Cabriana demanded.

"Working," Tyson replied. "And I told you I would have a night shift."

"Oh, is that so?" Cabriana shot back. "Then how did you get a red lipstick stain on your shirt? Do I look like a fool to you?"

Tyson sneered. "You know what? Yes, I wasn't at work last night. And what are you going to do about it? Nothing, because without me, you're nothing. You can't tell me what to do or ask me where I was because I'm the man of this house, and you should know your place, woman."

Tyson took a beer and went outside, calling someone while Cabriana fell to her knees, crying and feeling like a shadow to her husband.

"What have I done to deserve this life?" she lamented. "Is it because I got married too early or because I disappointed my parents by getting pregnant at a young age?"

As Cabriana cried, Keylin came downstairs, wearing old and smelly clothes that she hadn't had time to wash. She approached her mother, confused and anxious.

"Mother, are you okay?" Keylin asked.

"Why are you asking?" Cabriana snapped. "You're the reason I'm in this situation."

"What do you mean I'm the reason for all of this?" Keylin asked, tears welling up in her eyes.

"When I got pregnant with you at a young age, my life became upside down," Cabriana said. "I lost everything I had – my family, my parents, and my dignity. It's all your fault."

"No, mom," Keylin retorted, crying. "You're the one who did this to yourself. Where was I when you met my dad? Where was I when you decided to...?"

Before Keylin could finish her sentence, a hard slap silenced her. Cabriana glared at her.

"Don't you dare finish that sentence with your rotten and smelly mouth!" she shouted.

The scene fell silent as Keylin walked away, holding her cheek as someone was shouting for her . She went upstairs to Emily's room, where her stepsister was getting ready for school.

"Keylin," Emily said, looking at her with disdain. "Yes Emily," Keylin replied ."How many times do I have to tell you not to call me by my name? You should call me 'madam' or 'mam.'"

"I'm sorry, mam," Keylin said meekly. "You were saying?"

"I'm having a sleepover with my friend on Sunday, and I want you to wash my clothes and especially my favorite dress and bed sheets," Emily ordered.

"Okay, but I..." Keylin started to say.

"No 'buts,'" Emily cut her off. "Just do as I say, or else I'll make you and your mother live on the streets. Are we clear?"

"Yes, mam," Keylin replied, walking out of the room to make breakfast for her stepfather and stepsisters.

As she cooked, Keylin wondered, "Oh Lord, why do I deserve this life? Why do they hate me so much? Was my mother right that I'm the reason for all of this?"

Unexpectedly, Mindy walked into the kitchen. "Yes, you deserve this life, and you will suffer until you die."

Keylin remained silent, continuing to fry eggs and bacon for her stepfamily. After serving them, she did the chores while her mother washed her husband's shirts with lipstick stains.

When Keylin took out the trash, she saw new neighbors moving in. Her eyes met the gaze of the neighbor's son, and they exchanged waves and smiles. Keylin went back inside, and her mother asked her what took her so long.

Keylin looked at her mother angrily without saying a word and went upstairs to her basement room. She took a broken piece of mirror and examined her reflection, unsure if she was pretty or not. She gazed out the window and saw the boy again, fixing his bicycle. Their eyes met, and the boy called her over.

Keylin quickly fixed her hair and wore a beautiful dress that her grandmother had given her. She went outside without her mother seeing her.

"Hey," Keylin greeted shyly.

"Hi, I'm Kelvin," the boy replied with a smile. "And you are...?"

"I'm Keylin," she said, feeling a sense of nervousness.

"Wow, our names are almost the same," Kelvin said, chuckling. "By the way, I just saw your beautiful face staring at the window, and I decided to call you out."

Keylin blushed. "Did you just say I'm beautiful?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

"Yeah, that's what I just said," Kelvin replied, his smile growing wider. "You look lovely today."

Keylin's heart skipped a beat. No one had ever called her beautiful before. "Oh, thank you," she said, feeling a surge of confidence. "I never thought I look pretty because the people I live with always give me opposite of good compliments, even my mother herself."

"Your life must be tough," Kelvin said sympathetically. "But at least you have someone by your side now."

Keylin smiled, feeling a sense of hope. "Yeah, I guess you're right."

Kelvin introduced Keylin to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Peterson. They welcomed her warmly and invited her to stay for dinner. Over dinner, Keylin felt like she was part of a real family for the first time in her life.

After the dinner Kelvin took keylin out and both had a Chat . " so what do you think of my parents?",Kelvin asked . "

"They were nice and kind ", and thank you for inviting me over I really appreciate it ", said Keylin. Than they both hugged each other. And keylin went to her way home with a smile wide like she longed waited for this moment.

As keylin entered the house then , she went to her basement . As she was putting back her dress in the her old box full of memories where her life was full of happiness, she saw a photo of her mother at a stage singing. She then remembered that her grandmother said her mother was a beautiful singer in her school. Keylin suddenly had an Idea that she should start writing her own songs.

At night when her step family were having dinner while she was standing waiting them to finish then eat the left overs .Then after dinner she washes the dishes as she sings in a low voice as her family was sleeping , warming up her voice.

When she was done , she went to her basement .tired she throwed her self in the old rusty bed , she then slept .

In the morning she woke up and as regulary she made breakfast , washed Emily's dress and sheets. After all the chores she quickly went to her room and took a paper and a pen and started writing her song . Her idea was to write about her life and her emotions . She than sang her song in the sad motion with her beautiful voice. As she was singing she then spotted Kelvin looking at her in the window than he called her over.

Then Keylin went to Kelvin and greeted with her beautiful smile."goodmorning Kelvin ", Keylin greeted. " Hi Keylin, I just saw you in your window singing then I' decided to call you over" ,said kelvin. Then keylin says; " well I was singing the song that I wrote , I just wanted to do something since I'm a good for nothing in the house ." Well can I hear your song " said Kelvin. Then shyly keylin started to sing her song and than when she was done Kelvin was amazed as his tears were welling down knowledging what Keylin has been through in her life . Then Kelvin said ;" Wow that was beautiful. " You think so ? Well thank you " Keylin replied " . You know what can we go to my room ?."Kelvin said. Keylin agreed and they went inside to Kelvin's room and he took his phone and his ringlight. Then Kelvin said " . I'm kinda an influencer so I use all these stuff, right now I want to make a video of you singing so people can hear your beautiful voice and talent . He than sat Keylin down and made videos as keylin sang her song and they posted on Kelvin's tiktok account. Are you sure people will love my song?." Keylin asked" . Yes of course your amazing and your going to get famous .For now let go have some ice cream ."said kelvin ".Then they went for an ice cream and went to the park and sat there to watch the sunset. As they were sitting there, they talked about their life , their wishes and cracked jocks as they laughed together. You know what I've never felt like this before, thank you. "Keylin said".your welcome it's also kinda nice having you ." Kelvin replied".Then they both looked at each other. Kelvin leaned closer to Keylin as he was about to kiss her . Then Keylin's heart skipped a beat and Kelvin holded her hand and they both kissed under the sunset. After that Kelvin confesed that he like Keylin and want to spend the rest of his life with her . Then they went back to their houses .where have you been ?." Emily asked "

Chapter 2: The Mask Falls

"Where have you been?" Emily repeated, her voice cutting through the quiet hallway like a blade. She was standing at the top of the basement stairs, her arms crossed and a look of pure malice on her face.

Keylin froze, her heart still racing from the kiss at the sunset. "I—I was just at the park, mam," she whispered, reverting to the submissive tone she used to survive.

Emily stepped closer, sniffing the air. "You smell like expensive cologne and... vanilla? And why are you wearing that dress?" Before Keylin could answer, Emily snatched the phone out of her own pocket. "My friends just sent me a link. A TikTok from the new boy next door—Kelvin. The boy I was planning to invite to my party."

Emily turned the screen around. It was the video Kelvin had posted. Keylin looked radiant, her voice soaring with emotion. The caption read: Found a hidden gem next door. Isn't she beautiful?

"You think you're a star now?" Emily hissed, her face turning red. "You're a servant, Keylin. And Kelvin? He's just using you for views. He'd never actually want someone like you."

The Confrontation at the Door

The next afternoon, a knock sounded at the front door. Emily rushed to open it, wearing her most expensive outfit and a fake, sugary smile. She expected to see Kelvin coming to apologize for his "mistake" with the help.

"Kelvin! I was just about to come over and—"

Kelvin stood on the porch, but he wasn't smiling at Emily. He looked past her into the house. "Is Keylin here? We were supposed to go over some new lyrics today."

Emily's smile dropped. "Keylin is busy doing the laundry, Kelvin. Besides, you don't want to hang out with her. She's... troubled. My parents only keep her here out of charity. She's not who you think she is."

The Choice

At that moment, Keylin appeared behind Emily, holding a heavy basket of wet sheets. Her eyes were red from crying, but when she saw Kelvin, she stood a little taller.

"Keylin, put those down," Kelvin said firmly, stepping over the threshold.

"Excuse me?" Emily barked. "She has work to do. And stay out of our house!"

Kelvin didn't budge. He looked Emily dead in the eye. "I've seen how you treat her, Emily. I've heard the way you talk to her from my window. You call yourself a 'madam,' but you're just a bully. You have everything—the clothes, the room, the parents—but Keylin has something you'll never have."

"And what's that?" Emily sneered.

"A soul," Kelvin replied. He reached out and took the heavy basket from Keylin's hands, dropping it on the floor. "Keylin, you don't have to stay here and be their shadow. Your voice is going viral. People are already asking who you are. You're not 'good for nothing.' You're everything."

Emily stood frozen in shock as Kelvin took Keylin's hand. For the first time in her life, Keylin didn't look at the floor. She looked at her stepsister—not with hate, but with pity.

"The laundry can wait, Emily," Keylin said, her voice steady and clear. "I have a song to finish."

As they walked out the door together, leaving Emily fuming in the hallway, Keylin felt the weight of her "duty" finally begin to lift.

Chapter 3: The Price of a Dream

The house was suffocatingly quiet until the front door slammed open. Keylin walked in, still glowing from her afternoon with Kelvin, only to find her mother, Cabriana, sitting at the kitchen table. In front of her was Tyson's phone, glowing with the video of Keylin singing.

"So," Cabriana said, her voice trembling with a mixture of anger and something that looked like grief. "This is what you've been doing? While I'm scrubbing floors and taking insults from your stepfather, you're out there making a fool of us on the internet?"

"I'm not making a fool of anyone, Mom," Keylin said, her heart hammering. "I'm singing. Just like you used to."

The mention of the past made Cabriana flinch. She stood up, her eyes flashing. "Don't you dare compare yourself to me! I had a future until you happened. And now you're hanging around that boy next door? Emily is hysterical. She says you're trying to steal her life."

"I'm not stealing anything," Keylin argued, finding a spark of courage she never knew she had. "Kelvin believes in me. He says I have a talent that can get us out of here."

"There is no 'out of here' for people like us, Keylin!" Cabriana shouted, her voice breaking. "You're bound to this life, just like I am. Now, go to the basement and stay there until I say otherwise."

The Viral Spark

Keylin retreated to the basement, but she didn't cry. Instead, she checked the comments on the video Kelvin had posted. It had exploded. Thousands of people were praising her voice, calling her "The Basement Angel."

Suddenly, a notification popped up. It was a message from a local music producer who had seen the video. He wanted Keylin to come to his studio to record a professional demo.

The Escape

That night, Keylin packed her few belongings into the old memory box—the photo of her mother singing, her grandmother's dress, and her notebook of songs. She knew that if she stayed, Tyson and Emily would eventually find a way to crush her spirit completely.

She climbed out of the basement window, the cool night air hitting her face. Kelvin was waiting by the fence, his bicycle ready.

"You sure about this?" he whispered, reaching out to take her hand.

"I have to," Keylin replied, looking back at the dark, silent house. "If I stay, I'll end up like my mother—hating the world because I was too afraid to live in it."

The Confrontation at the Gate

Just as they were about to leave, the porch light flickered on. Tyson walked out, looking disheveled and angry.

"Where do you think you're going, girl?" he bellowed. "You've got chores to do, and Emily's room is a mess."

Kelvin stepped in front of Keylin. "She's not your servant anymore, Mr. Andrewson. And she's definitely not your shadow."

Tyson lunged forward, but Kelvin didn't flinch. He held up his phone, which was currently recording a Live stream. "Careful," Kelvin said calmly. "There are ten thousand people watching this right now. You want the whole world to see how you treat your family?"

Tyson stopped in his tracks, his face turning a sickly pale color. He was a man who cared deeply about his reputation in the neighborhood. He snarled, looking at Keylin with pure loathing. "Fine. Go. But don't you come crawling back when you fail."

"I won't be coming back," Keylin said, her voice echoing through the night. "Because for the first time, I'm not bound by duty. I'm bound by my own heart."

Chapter 4: The Echo of the Past

Two weeks after Keylin left, the Andrewson household was a storm of bitter silence. Emily was furious because her follower count had dropped after Kelvin's followers found out how she treated Keylin. Tyson was constantly on edge, fearful that more "Live" videos would expose his behavior.

But Cabriana was the one most affected. She sat in Keylin's empty basement room, holding the photo of herself on stage. For years, she had looked at that photo with resentment, blaming Keylin for the end of her dreams. Now, she saw her daughter's face on every billboard and social media feed.

Keylin's first single, Bound by Duty, had hit number one on the viral charts.

The Studio Reunion

Keylin was at the recording studio, wearing a simple but elegant outfit Kelvin had helped her pick. She looked healthy, happy, and—for the first time—free.

"Someone is here to see you," Kelvin whispered, touching her shoulder. He looked worried. "I can tell them to go away if you're not ready."

Keylin turned around. Standing in the doorway of the high-tech studio was Cabriana. She looked small, stripped of her anger, and her eyes were red from crying.

"Keylin," her mother whispered. "I heard the song. I heard the lyrics about... the basement. About the lipstick stains. About the silence."

Keylin stood her ground. "I didn't write it to hurt you, Mom. I wrote it to survive."

"I know," Cabriana choked out. She stepped forward, reaching out a trembling hand. "I realized that for seventeen years, I was punishing you because I was too weak to leave Tyson. I let him treat you like a servant because it was easier than admitting I had failed myself. You didn't ruin my life, Keylin. I did. And then I tried to ruin yours."

The Turning Point

Keylin looked at her mother. The "duty" she had felt to take the abuse for her mother's sake was gone. But a new feeling took its place: a choice.

"I'm moving into an apartment next week," Keylin said quietly. "Kelvin's parents are helping me with the legal side of my contracts. I'm never going back to that house, and I'm never calling Tyson my family again."

Cabriana nodded, tears streaming down her face. "I left him this morning. I have nowhere to go, and I don't expect you to take me in... I just wanted you to know that you were right. You are beautiful. And you can sing."

Keylin took a deep breath. She wasn't ready to forgive everything yet, but she wasn't the girl in the basement anymore. She was the one with the power now.

"Sit down, Mom," Keylin said, gesturing to the producer's couch. "Listen to the bridge of the song. I want to know if you remember how to harmonize."

Chapter 5: The Grand Finale

Six months later, the city was buzzing. Neon lights flashed outside the Grand Theatre: KEYLIN: THE BOUND BY DUTY TOUR — SOLD OUT.

Inside the dressing room, Keylin looked at herself in a full-length mirror. She wasn't wearing the old, smelly clothes anymore. She wore a gown that shimmered like starlight, and her hair was styled to perfection. Kelvin stood behind her, leaning against the doorframe with a proud smile.

"Ready?" he asked. "The livestream has over a million people waiting."

"I'm ready," Keylin said, her voice no longer a whisper. "But I have one thing to do first."

The Final Confrontation

Outside the stage door, two people were arguing with the security guards: Emily and Tyson. They looked desperate. Since Keylin had left, Tyson had lost his job due to the public outcry over his behavior, and Emily had been shunned by her peers. They weren't there to apologize; they were there to ask for money.

Keylin walked out to meet them.

"Keylin! Honey!" Tyson shouted, trying to sound fatherly. "We're so proud of you. We were thinking, since we're family, you could help us with the mortgage..."

Emily pushed forward. "And I need a shoutout on your page, Keylin. It's the least you can do after I let you live in our house for all those years."

Keylin looked at them—really looked at them. For the first time, she didn't feel afraid. She didn't feel "bound" by them at all.

"You didn't 'let' me live there," Keylin said calmly. "You trapped me there. You took my mother's spirit and tried to take mine. But look at me now." She turned to the security guard. "Please escort them out. They aren't on the list."

As they were led away, screaming about "loyalty," Keylin felt the final thread of her old life snap. It didn't hurt; it felt like breathing for the first time.

The Performance

Keylin walked onto the stage. The roar of the crowd was deafening. In the front row sat her mother, Cabriana, who was now six months sober and working as a vocal coach at Keylin's studio. They shared a nod—a silent pact that the cycle of pain ended here.

Keylin grabbed the microphone and looked into the camera, knowing the whole world was watching.

"This song," she told the audience, "is for anyone living in a basement—whether it's a real room or just a place in your mind where people tell you that you aren't enough. You aren't bound by what they say. You are bound only by how loud you are willing to sing."

As she hit the first note, Kelvin watched from the wings, recording the moment that would change music history. Keylin wasn't just a girl with a sad story anymore. She was a queen.
