Chapter 189: A War Without Smoke
Penny and Sheldon couldn't understand it yet.
To them, it was nothing more than a spectacular social disaster.
But in reality, the clash would end up nudging them a little closer together.
Penny would gradually learn to respect rules more.
And Sheldon, almost without realizing it, would become a little less rigid.
So, in a way, it was good news stacked on top of more good news.
Over the following days, Ethan's enthusiasm for America's Next Top Model began to fade noticeably.
Once he caught that familiar scent of manipulation and emotional conditioning, he found it difficult to keep watching. It stirred up memories he'd rather leave buried.
He could no longer instinctively identify with the cold-faced judges who held everyone's fate in their hands.
Instead, he found himself sympathizing with the contestants—the women constantly molded by rules, pushed forward by pressure, and tossed around by their emotions.
Howard and Raj, on the other hand, showed no signs of losing interest.
The only difference was that they had long since stopped caring about the show itself.
"According to triangulation," Howard declared solemnly, holding up a sheet of paper covered in lines and calculations, "we've basically narrowed down the filming location."
"It's somewhere on Manhattan's Upper East Side, near Central Park."
"Our margin of error is less than three square miles."
Raj added thoughtfully,
"Although it could also be somewhere in the Hudson Valley in upstate New York."
Ethan looked at the two of them in confusion.
"...What exactly are you trying to do?"
Howard's eyes lit up.
"First we pinpoint the exact location..."
Then he turned to Ethan with an excited grin.
"So... you guys want to come with us?"
"Come with you... for what?"
Leonard already had a very bad feeling.
Raj answered as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.
"To party with beautiful women, of course."
Leonard rejected the idea without hesitation.
"Have you lost your mind?"
"You won't even get through the front gate."
"You probably won't even be allowed near the place."
Howard waved dismissively.
"People said the same thing about Armstrong."
"And then he walked on the moon."
"No one ever said that to Armstrong," Sheldon corrected from the side.
"Sending a man to the Moon required the combined efforts of the United States over the course of an entire decade."
Howard gathered up his papers and proudly announced,
"My fellow Americans..."
"Before this year is over..."
"...we will send Howard Wolowitz to the side of a supermodel."
Raj calmly added the finishing blow.
"And years later, many people will insist it never happened."
Ethan finally couldn't help asking,
"Let's say you somehow make it inside."
"Then what?"
"Just so you can post a picture online?"
"Anything is possible!" Howard declared, throwing his hand into the air.
"Just do it!"
Well...
People always seemed to put in extraordinary effort whenever they were about to do something either incredibly stupid...
...or spectacularly reckless.
Then again...
Who knew?
Maybe they'd actually pull it off.
---
Meanwhile, the cold war between Sheldon and Penny was escalating rapidly.
Thanks to Leonard's "live reports from the front lines," Ethan received battlefield updates almost every day.
Round One: The Cheesecake Factory
That evening, the usual group of five went to the Cheesecake Factory for dinner.
Penny expertly took everyone's order...
Except Sheldon's.
Just as she turned to leave, Sheldon stopped her.
"Excuse me."
"You forgot my Barbecue Bacon Cheeseburger."
"Barbecue sauce, bacon, and cheese on the side."
Penny blinked innocently.
"Oh..."
"Didn't I tell you?"
"You've been banned from the Cheesecake Factory."
"...Why?"
She shrugged.
"Because you struck out."
"Strike One for walking through the door."
"Strike Two for sitting down."
"And Strike Three..."
"...because I don't like your attitude."
...
It turned out Penny had seriously underestimated Sheldon's ability to file complaints.
In the end, after the restaurant manager stepped in, Penny was forced to take his order and personally serve his meal.
She set the plate in front of him with complete sincerity.
"Enjoy."
Then she leaned in slightly and added in a low voice,
"If you dare."
Sheldon stared at the burger, caught in an intense battle between logic and appetite.
In the end...
He decided the risk wasn't worth taking.
Round One:
Winner—Penny.
Damage dealt to Sheldon: One cheeseburger.
Round Two: The Internet War
That night, Penny returned to her apartment only to discover that no matter what she did, she couldn't connect to the internet.
Instead, a prerecorded video appeared on her screen.
Sheldon sat squarely in the center of the frame, speaking with all the solemnity of a public service announcement.
"Your days of freeloading off my Wi-Fi are over."
"If you want internet access, open your own account and pay for it yourself."
"...Or apologize."
The moment the video ended, Penny exploded.
"Oh, it's war!"
Howard immediately puffed out his chest.
"I can get your internet back."
After a few quick keystrokes, he cracked the system and restored the Wi-Fi password.
Everyone was just about to celebrate—
When a second prerecorded video automatically popped onto the screen.
Sheldon's face appeared once again.
"As punishment for this act of retaliation..."
"...each of you receives one additional strike."
The living room fell into dead silence.
A few seconds later...
Every pair of eyes slowly turned toward Howard.
"Thanks a lot, Howard."
"Real hero."
"Nicely done."
Round Two:
Winner—Sheldon.
Damage dealt to Penny: Loss of internet access.
Bonus Effect: One strike applied to every innocent bystander.
---
Round Three: Laundry Night
Saturday.
8:15 p.m.
Sheldon's sacred Laundry Night.
Half an hour before he arrived, Penny went downstairs and occupied every washing machine in the laundry room.
The instant Sheldon walked in...
He froze.
It was as though he'd just witnessed the apocalypse.
"Oh," Penny said innocently, spreading her hands.
"Looks like every machine's taken."
"I guess you'll just have to do your laundry another night."
"But if I choose another night..." Sheldon replied gravely, "...then it won't be Laundry Night."
"Because deep in my heart..."
"Laundry Night is Saturday evening."
That single sentence struck directly at the core of his soul.
Unable to contain himself, Sheldon declared,
"Woman..."
"You are challenging someone vastly more intelligent than you."
Penny snorted.
"Then your superior intellect can go to hell."
---
An hour later...
Penny returned to collect her laundry.
Every last piece of clothing was gone.
She stormed upstairs and pounded on Sheldon's door.
"Sheldon!"
"Where are my clothes?"
Calmly, Sheldon led her to the window and pointed outside.
"I happened to be admiring the scenery..."
"...when I noticed a brassiere."
Penny followed his finger.
Her bra.
Her T-shirts.
Her skirts.
Every single item of clothing now hung from the telephone wires outside like colorful flags fluttering proudly in the breeze.
"What the hell?!"
"How did you even get my clothes onto the telephone lines?!"
Sheldon smiled with unmistakable satisfaction.
"Once you truly understand the laws of physics, Penny..."
"...anything is possible."
He considered it for a moment before adding thoughtfully,
"May I also say..."
"'Mwahahaha.'"
---
By now Leonard couldn't take it anymore.
From beginning to end, he'd been firmly on Penny's side.
Yet the harder he tried to mediate...
The worse the war became.
Ethan, meanwhile, mostly remained silent, only occasionally speaking in Sheldon's defense.
Objectively speaking...
Penny had been the one crossing Sheldon's boundaries over and over.
She touched his onion ring.
She stole his designated seat.
She tampered with his hamburger.
And finally...
She deliberately sabotaged Laundry Night.
Sheldon's counterattacks escalated accordingly.
He banned Penny from the apartment.
He cut off her internet.
And finally...
He crossed his own moral line by hanging her clothes from telephone wires.
You could almost say that, in that final act...
Sheldon had managed to outgrow even himself.
Ethan decided the war had gone on long enough.
The solution was simple.
If a problem couldn't be solved on its current level...
Raise it to a higher one.
So Leonard taught Penny the ultimate strategy:
Call his mother.
---
It wasn't long before Sheldon received the phone call.
He began explaining why he "had to stand by his principles."
Halfway through...
His confidence started wavering.
A few sentences later...
He sounded distinctly aggrieved.
"It's not fair..."
"Why should I apologize?"
"I don't think Jesus is concerned with something this trivial..."
Then came several minutes of complete silence...
...while his mother thoroughly carpet-bombed him from Texas.
Eventually, Sheldon's voice softened.
"...All right."
"I was wrong."
"You're right."
"I suppose I can't actually know what Jesus is thinking."
"...Goodbye."
---
Later that evening...
Sheldon stood outside Penny's apartment, holding a laundry basket filled with neatly folded clothes.
Across the hallway, Ethan and Leonard watched the scene unfold from their apartment doorway.
When Penny opened the door, Sheldon took a deep breath.
"Penny..."
"I sincerely apologize for everything I've done."
"Here are your clothes."
"I have reset your strike count to zero..."
"...and officially rescinded your ban from my apartment."
Penny accepted the basket before cautiously asking,
"So..."
"Does that mean I can sit wherever I want?"
Sheldon's eyelids twitched violently.
His face visibly spasmed.
Penny immediately waved both hands.
"Forget I said that!"
"Forget it!"
"That part isn't important."
She set the basket down and dusted off her hands.
"Sheldon..."
"You've been incredibly generous."
"I really appreciate it."
"...Thank you," Sheldon replied.
"Good night, Sheldon."
Penny started closing the door.
"Penny..."
Sheldon called out.
She paused.
"What is it?"
He looked at her for a long moment before finally saying,
"...You win."
"Thanks."
Then, with complete sincerity, Sheldon added,
"You should remember..."
"With great power comes great responsibility."
Penny nodded solemnly.
"Got it."
The next second, they both turned around simultaneously and returned to their own apartments.
Watching the entire exchange, Ethan couldn't suppress a smile.
Peace was never something that simply happened.
It demanded compromise.
Sacrifice.
And, occasionally...
The timely intervention of a mother from Texas.
---
On the very night that peace was finally restored between Sheldon and Penny...
Howard and Raj stood outside the mansion they had spent weeks tracking down.
With solemn determination, they rang the doorbell.
And somehow...
They actually managed to bluff their way inside.
Yet neither of them ever spoke about that successful adventure afterward.
And from that day forward...
Howard never again mentioned finding "the future Mrs. Howard Wolowitz."
