Morning at the Sanctuary began with frost.
The first light of day slipped across the outer fields, turning the thin layer of ice on the grass into scattered shards of silver. Smoke curled upward from the chimneys of the inner buildings while workers moved slowly along the perimeter walls beginning their daily inspections.
The cold had settled in again overnight.
Winter was not finished yet.
Near the center courtyard beneath the Great Tree, three people stood waiting.
Marie shifted her weight slightly and pulled her coat tighter around her shoulders.
"I still think this is cheating," she said.
Penelope laughed softly.
"It's not cheating."
"It's definitely cheating," Marie insisted. "People are supposed to drive places."
Silas leaned against the railing beside them, arms folded.
"People used to drive places," he corrected.
Marie glanced at him.
"You're enjoying this."
Silas shrugged.
"A little."
He looked toward the far side of the courtyard where Shane approached across the frozen ground.
The builders scattered nearby barely looked up.
Most of them had grown used to strange things happening around the Sanctuary.
Shane stopped a few steps away from the group.
"You ready?" he asked.
Marie raised a hand.
"Before we do this, I have one question."
Shane waited.
"How exactly does this work?"
Silas grinned.
"Teleportation."
Marie gave him a look.
"Very helpful."
Shane chuckled quietly.
"It's not exactly teleportation."
Penelope tilted her head.
"What is it then?"
Shane glanced toward the Great Tree rising behind them.
"Shortcuts."
Marie blinked.
"That sounds suspicious."
"It should," Shane said.
Silas pushed off the railing.
"So we're going to Western New York?"
Shane nodded.
"Hugo's network is expanding faster than expected."
Penelope smiled.
"That's good news."
"Yes," Shane said. "But it means they need more structure."
Silas cracked his knuckles slightly.
"That's why we're going."
Marie glanced between them.
"You two are way too calm about this."
Shane stepped forward.
"The corridor's stable."
Marie squinted at him.
"You say that like you've done this a hundred times."
"Not quite."
Silas laughed.
"Good enough for me."
Shane shook his head slightly and lifted one hand.
The air around them changed.
Not dramatically.
Just a subtle tightening, like the moment before a storm when the wind holds its breath.
The ground beneath their feet hummed faintly.
Marie looked down.
"Okay that part feels weird."
Penelope took a slow breath.
Silas just watched Shane.
A thin ripple of violet light spread outward across the frozen ground.
The courtyard blurred.
Not vanishing.
Just folding slightly.
Like the world had become a map and someone had pressed two distant points together.
Marie blinked.
The Sanctuary disappeared.
Cold air rushed around them again.
But it smelled different.
The ground beneath their boots was no longer packed courtyard soil.
It was snow.
Real snow.
Deep and untouched except for a narrow path cutting through the trees nearby.
Marie stared.
"Okay."
She turned slowly in a circle.
"Okay that was definitely cheating."
Silas grinned.
"Western New York."
The forest around them stretched tall and quiet beneath a gray winter sky. Pine branches sagged under fresh snowfall, and the distant sound of a chainsaw echoed faintly somewhere beyond the ridge.
Penelope brushed a few flakes from her coat.
"That was smoother than I expected."
Shane lowered his hand.
The faint ripple in the air faded instantly.
Silas looked around.
"We're close to Hugo?"
Shane nodded toward the narrow road ahead.
"Half a mile."
Marie pointed at the sky.
"Can you do that again?"
Shane laughed.
"Not immediately."
Silas smirked.
"Focus pool?"
Shane raised an eyebrow.
"You've been talking to Saul."
Silas shrugged.
"He likes explaining things."
Penelope looked down the road.
"Well," she said. "Let's go meet the neighbors."
Shane nodded once.
"I'll check on you in a few days."
Marie blinked.
"You're not staying?"
Shane shook his head.
"Too many places to watch."
Silas extended his hand.
Shane shook it firmly.
"Keep them alive," Silas said.
Shane smiled faintly.
"That's usually the goal."
Marie waved as he stepped back.
"Thanks for the ride."
Shane raised two fingers in a casual salute.
The air rippled again.
Then he was gone.
Marie stared at the empty space.
"Okay."
She turned toward Silas and Penelope.
"Now that was cheating."
Silas laughed.
"Come on."
They followed the snow-covered road through the forest.
After a few minutes the sound of engines and voices began drifting through the trees.
The Western New York frontier.
⸻
The clearing ahead had once been a small logging yard.
Now it looked like the center of a frontier town.
Stacks of cut timber lined the edges of the field.
Two watchtowers stood at opposite ends of the clearing overlooking the road.
A dozen people moved between buildings carrying tools, lumber, and crates of supplies.
At the center of the yard Hugo stood beside a long worktable studying a map with Mike and Jason.
Jason looked up first.
He blinked.
"Well I'll be damned."
Hugo turned.
For a moment he simply stared.
Then he laughed.
"You took the shortcut."
Silas nodded.
"Seemed faster."
Hugo walked forward and clasped his forearm.
"Good to see you."
Marie looked around the clearing.
"This place got busy."
Mike chuckled.
"You should've seen it two weeks ago."
Jason pointed toward the watchtowers.
"Trade routes opened faster than expected."
Penelope stepped closer to the map table.
"What do you need?"
Hugo tapped three locations on the map.
"Coordination."
Silas leaned over the table.
"Show me."
Marie crossed her arms and looked around the clearing again.
Workers moved steadily between buildings.
Carts rolled along the snow-packed roads.
Smoke rose from a large cookhouse near the edge of the yard.
It felt less like a camp and more like a small town.
Hugo glanced at her.
"You settling in alright?"
Marie nodded.
"Yeah."
She watched a group of builders reinforcing the base of one watchtower.
"Looks like you're building something real here."
Hugo followed her gaze.
"That's the idea."
Silas straightened slightly over the map.
"So where do we start?"
Jason tapped the northern road.
"Salt shipments."
Mike pointed east.
"Dairy routes."
Penelope added quietly.
"And communication."
Hugo smiled.
"Exactly."
Around them the clearing buzzed with quiet activity.
Workers hauling timber.
Guards rotating watch along the towers.
New roads forming through the snow.
The frontier network was growing.
And with three more builders now standing at the map table—
it was about to grow faster.
