Chapter 80: A Will Passed Down Through the Chaos

The Puppeteer's final card.

[Overload Fusion] [Spell: Fusion Summon 1 Fusion Monster from your Extra Deck that lists only Machine monsters as materials, by banishing those Fusion Materials from your field or GY, but they must be DARK Machine monsters.]

Similar in principle to Miracle Fusion — pulling Fusion Materials directly from the Graveyard rather than the hand. The difference was that everything going in had to be DARK attribute.

The activation effect tore open a void above the battlefield. A spiral of black energy punched through the air, and what opened was less like a portal and more like a wound — a hole in the space above them through which nothing but darkness was visible, deep and without edges, bleeding shadow downward onto the field.

"I banish from my Graveyard — Ancient Gear Dark Golem! Ancient Gear Gadjiltron Dragon! Ancient Gear Golem! Ancient Gear Beast!"

Two of those monsters had been on the field tonight. The other two had never appeared in this duel.

Amano understood instantly. "Card Destruction. He discarded them as Fusion Materials."

Rin had read the Card Destruction play entirely wrong from the start.

She'd assumed it was a dig for more Heavy Storm copies — another activation trigger to pull Ancient Gear monsters through Geartown and Castle. That was Bart's documented pattern, the move Rin had already seen him make and catalogued.

The Puppeteer had hidden his actual endgame beneath a layer of Bart's established habits. Card Destruction wasn't filtering for the next big play. It was loading the Graveyard for the one after that. The real card — the dark one, the one that hadn't come from Bart's actual deck — had been waiting to activate from the very beginning. The entire sequence had been misdirection.

"Despair before it! A Fusion that reduces civilization itself to gear and rubble!"

The four Ancient Gear monsters were drawn upward into the void, their EARTH attribute distorting as they went, warping toward DARK as the Overload Fusion's energy processed them.

"Sleeping fear in the ruins of the gears! Rivets for bones! A boiler for a heart! Chaos as its vessel!"

"Four machines become one nameless colossus!"

"FUSION SUMMON — ANCIENT GEAR CHAOS GIANT!!"

[Ancient Gear Chaos Giant] [10-Star / DARK / Machine / Fusion / Effect]

[ATK: 4500 / DEF: 3000]

[Fusion Materials: 4 "Ancient Gear" monsters]

What emerged from the void wasn't built to human scale. The mechanical giant that materialized dwarfed the surrounding club buildings — a figure so massive that looking at it felt like looking at an event rather than a creature. Every surface was dark iron. Every joint ground with the sound of enormous mechanisms under impossible stress.

"Four thousand five hundred." Amano felt the cold sweat before he'd consciously processed the number.

Neo Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon territory. The same ATK range as what Chiaki had fielded. But what Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon didn't have — what made the number on this card something qualitatively different — was the effect text.

[While this card is in the Monster Zone: this card is unaffected by Spell and Trap effects. Your opponent cannot activate monster effects during the Battle Phase.]

Continuous immunity to all Spell and Trap cards. Battle phase effect immunity layered on top.

[This card can attack all monsters your opponent controls once each. If this card attacks a Defense Position monster, inflict piercing battle damage.]

Multi-attack. Piercing damage. The combination of total defensive immunity with the ability to hit everything on the field in a single battle phase.

Both the absolute spear and the absolute shield. In one card.

"This is a problem," Amano said.

An understatement.

Because Rin's field currently held two monsters. The moment Starlight Road resolved, she'd gained Stardust Dragon in addition to Stardust Spark Dragon. That was one extra attack target — and with Ancient Gear Chaos Giant able to hit each monster once, two targets meant two attacks. Two attacks against a life point total that was already sitting at 4300.

If both Stardust monsters went down, the remaining damage would come directly.

"I announce the end of civilization! Entering Battle Phase!"

The Puppeteer's declaration was the opening of something inevitable. Ancient Gear Chaos Giant raised one arm, the limb alone large enough to demolish a building.

"Wait."

Rin's hand moved. The final Set card flipped open.

"That card won't work," the Puppeteer said immediately. "Ancient Gear Chaos Giant is unaffected by Spell and Trap effects. You can't touch it."

"I'm not targeting it. Quick-Play Spell — Mystical Space Typhoon!"

[Mystical Space Typhoon] [Quick-Play Spell: Target 1 Spell/Trap on the field; destroy it.]

"I'm targeting the Field Spell — Geartown!"

The Puppeteer actually laughed.

"You've run out of options and you're destroying my Geartown?! I'd be delighted — that just triggers another Special Summon from my Deck! Go ahead, make my field worse for yourself!"

He was right that Geartown's destruction triggered a free Ancient Gear Special Summon. He was right that this seemed like Rin making a desperate, pointless move under pressure.

What he hadn't noticed was what Rin was doing with her other hand.

Before the typhoon resolved — before Geartown's destruction effect activated — Rin lifted Stardust Dragon's card from the monster zone.

"Chaining to Mystical Space Typhoon — Stardust Dragon's effect."

[Stardust Dragon] [When a card or effect is activated that would destroy a card(s) on the field: You can Tribute this card; negate the activation and destroy it. During the End Phase, if this card negated an effect this way: You can Special Summon this card from the GY.]

Mystical Space Typhoon was activating to destroy a field card. Stardust Dragon's effect triggers on destruction effects targeting field cards. The chain was legal.

"Shine! — 'Majestic Sacrifice'!!"

Stardust Dragon released itself. The typhoon it had been chained to — the one Rin herself had activated — was negated and destroyed.

[Stardust Dragon — Tributed]

[Mystical Space Typhoon — negated and destroyed]

Geartown remained. No destruction. No Ancient Gear Special Summon.

And the field now held only one target.

Stardust Spark Dragon. Alone.

"Brilliant play, senpai," Amano said, and he meant it without reservation.

From an angle that had looked like total defeat — Life Points low, field about to be cleared, a monster with full immunity incoming — Rin had surgically cut the number of attack targets in half. Ancient Gear Chaos Giant could only hit Stardust Spark Dragon now. One attack. Two thousand ATK absorbing forty-five hundred.

Alive. Just.

"But are we actually alive?"

"Battle! Ancient Gear Chaos Giant — 'Chaos Vortex — Billion Ton Drill Cannon'!!"

The arm that descended wasn't swinging. It was drilling, a concentrated spiral of chaos energy forming at the point of impact and compressing until the release point. The kind of force that the attack name promised and the visual delivered.

Stardust Spark Dragon braced — and lasted approximately one frame of contact before the attack simply continued through it.

[Stardust Spark Dragon — destroyed]

The excess force kept moving. The club building behind Rin absorbed the overflow. Roughly half of the structure's upper floors collapsed inward with a sound like the world briefly ending.

"AHHHHHH—!!"

Amano & Rin LP: 4300 -> 1800

The blast itself had centered on Rin. Amano caught the shockwave — flung sideways, the breath knocked clean out of him, rolling across the pavement before stopping.

Rin hadn't been launched. She'd gone to her knees. Both hands on the ground, not quite willing to let the body finish the fall. The star fragments scattered around her — the residual presence of Stardust Dragon's card spirit, the reason she was still conscious — flickered in and out like a signal losing strength.

"You survived that on your card spirit's protection alone," the Puppeteer said. "But the result is clear. You've lost, Rin Seiya."

LP at 1800. Field completely empty. Ancient Gear Chaos Giant standing intact with full immunities and the ability to end everything in one more attack.

Rin wiped the side of her mouth with the back of her hand.

"You caught me off guard. I'll give you that." She looked up. "But it's too early to talk about winning. Stardust Dragon's will is already carrying forward — and what comes next for you is King's Synchro."

She was looking at Amano when she said it.

At this point in a Dark Game, at 1800 LP, with an immune 4500 ATK monster on the field.

Still doing character roleplay.

Amano reached for his deck.

"My turn — draw."
