Chapter 24 - Chapter 24_ The Envelope

Elena stared at the envelope long after the man disappeared.

The café suddenly felt different.

Too loud.

Too crowded.

Too small.

Her heart was still racing.

*If you stay with him, you're going to end up exactly like Victoria.*

The words echoed inside her head.

Again and again.

Slowly, she reached for the envelope.

For a second she considered throwing it away.

Leaving.

Pretending none of this had happened.

But she already knew she wouldn't.

Curiosity had gotten her into this mess.

And curiosity wasn't about to leave now.

Taking a steadying breath, she opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

Nothing else.

No letter.

No explanation.

Just a photograph.

Elena pulled it out.

Then froze.

It was Victoria.

But not the Victoria she had seen in old magazine articles.

Not the smiling woman standing beside Adrian.

This Victoria looked worried.

Afraid.

She was getting into a car.

Looking over her shoulder.

As though she knew someone was watching her.

Elena's stomach twisted.

She turned the photograph over.

There was handwriting on the back.

Only four words.

**She knew the truth.**

A chill ran through her body.

The truth about what?

Her phone rang.

Adrian.

For a moment she considered ignoring it.

Then she answered.

"Hello?"

"Where are you?"

His voice was sharper this time.

Less patient.

Less calm.

"I'm still at the café."

A pause.

Then:

"Stay there."

Immediately, Elena frowned.

"Why?"

"Adrian?"

"I'll explain when I get there."

The line went dead.

Elena stared at her phone.

That wasn't reassuring.

Not even slightly.

---

Twenty-five minutes later, Adrian arrived.

He wasn't alone.

Daniel was with him.

The moment they entered the café, Elena knew something was wrong.

Neither man looked relaxed.

Neither man looked relieved.

If anything, they looked worried.

Very worried.

Adrian reached her table first.

His eyes moved quickly over her.

Checking.

Making sure she was unharmed.

Only then did he sit down.

"What happened?" Elena asked.

Daniel exchanged a glance with Adrian.

Neither seemed eager to answer.

That immediately irritated her.

"Can everyone stop doing that?"

Adrian frowned.

"Doing what?"

"Looking at each other instead of talking."

Daniel actually had the decency to look guilty.

Adrian did not.

Finally, Elena placed the photograph on the table.

Both men went still.

Daniel swore quietly.

Adrian's expression hardened instantly.

"You opened the envelope."

"Of course I opened the envelope."

"What else was inside?"

"Nothing."

Adrian picked up the photograph.

His jaw clenched.

Hard.

Elena had never seen him react this strongly to anything.

Not even the messages.

Not even the black car.

This was different.

"Where did you get this?" Daniel asked.

"A man gave it to me."

"What man?"

"I don't know."

That answer frustrated everyone.

Especially Elena.

The mysterious stranger had appeared out of nowhere and vanished just as quickly.

It made no sense.

None of it did.

---

Back at the apartment that evening, Elena couldn't stop thinking.

Victoria.

The photograph.

The warning.

The envelope.

Something connected all of it.

She just couldn't see how.

As she stood by the window, lost in thought, Adrian entered the room.

For a few moments neither spoke.

Then Adrian surprised her.

"Victoria was afraid before she died."

Elena turned sharply.

"What?"

He stood near the doorway.

His expression unreadable.

"She never told me why."

The admission seemed to cost him something.

"She started cancelling meetings."

His voice remained low.

"She stopped going places alone."

Elena's heartbeat quickened.

"Did she tell anyone?"

"No."

The answer came immediately.

"At least... not that I know of."

The room fell silent.

Then a terrible possibility entered Elena's mind.

"What if she found something?"

Adrian didn't respond.

But the look in his eyes told her he had wondered the same thing for years.

---

That night, long after Adrian had gone to his study, Elena sat on the edge of her bed.

The photograph rested beside her.

She turned it over again.

And again.

And again.

Until finally she noticed something.

A tiny detail she had missed before.

In the corner of the image.

Barely visible.

A reflection in the car window.

A man's face.

Small.

Blurred.

But recognizable.

Elena's breath caught.

She had seen him before.

Not in the black car.

Not in the old photographs.

At Volkov Industries.

Inside Adrian's company.

Someone connected to Adrian's inner circle.

Someone much closer than they realized.

And suddenly the mystery became far more dangerous.

Because the enemy wasn't watching from outside anymore.

The enemy was already inside.
