The first rumors did not arrive in Konoha through the front gate.
They never did.
They came through coded messages. A merchant's ledger with one line written in a particular shade of ink. A patrol report that contained three meaningless numbers which, when rearranged, described an entirely different event. A missing-nin's corpse found along a border route with a sealing tag hidden beneath the tongue. A hawk returning from the war front. A messenger who never officially existed.
And, most importantly, the private networks of the great clans.
By the time an ordinary shinobi heard whispers about the battle involving Kyro, Miku, and the dragon, the people who actually mattered had already begun discussing it.
Konoha
Uchiha District
Night had settled over the village.
The Uchiha district was unusually quiet. Lanterns illuminated the broad streets surrounding the clan compound, their warm light reflecting from polished wooden buildings and the distinctive red-and-white Uchiha fan symbols displayed throughout the district. The air smelled of woodsmoke and distant cooking fires, but inside one of the clan's meeting houses the atmosphere was colder.
Several men sat in silence.
They were not young academy students. They were not ordinary chunin. These were experienced Uchiha shinobi, men who had survived battlefields, awakened the Sharingan, and understood exactly what a creature capable of fighting an S-rank shinobi represented.
At the center of the room sat a senior Uchiha officer. An intelligence scroll rested before him. He slowly unrolled it.
"The report has been independently verified."
Nobody spoke.
"Kyro was attacked."
A few pairs of eyes narrowed.
"By whom?"
"Orochimaru."
That produced a reaction.
One of the older Uchiha frowned. "Orochimaru attacked him personally?"
"Apparently."
"Then why is Orochimaru still alive?"
A pause.
"Because he escaped."
The room became quieter. That answer alone told them something important. Orochimaru was not a man who willingly retreated, not when there was something worth obtaining.
The senior officer tapped the scroll. "The battle involved Kyro, his fae companion, and the dragon summon."
That word changed the atmosphere.
Dragon.
Several Sharingan eyes shifted toward the speaker.
"Repeat that."
"The dragon."
"No." The Uchiha man's voice hardened. "Repeat the *description."
The intelligence officer glanced down. "Large western-style dragon. Red coloration. Enormous physical strength. High resistance to conventional attacks. Capable of flight. Regenerative capabilities. Produces extremely powerful fire-based techniques."
A younger Uchiha leaned forward. "How powerful?"
"We don't know."
"That's not an answer."
"The report describes one of its techniques as capable of turning an area hundreds of meters ahead of it into molten slag."
Silence.
Someone slowly exhaled. Another Uchiha leaned back. "That sounds exaggerated."
"It did." The officer produced another scroll and placed it down. "Until we received confirmation from two separate battlefield observers. They both described the same phenomenon."
The room remained silent. One of the Uchiha stared at the scroll. Then he smiled faintly, not with amusement, but with interest.
"So." His Sharingan activated. Three tomoe rotated slowly. "A creature capable of producing fire on that scale… is wandering around our world."
The Uchiha had always possessed a complicated relationship with fire.
Fire was not simply another elemental nature transformation to them. It was tradition. Identity. The symbol of their clan itself was associated with the fan that represented their ability to create and manipulate flame. The Fire Release: Great Fireball Technique was practically synonymous with the Uchiha, a rite of passage, a technique taught to young clan members, a demonstration of control, a symbol of adulthood.
And because of that, the idea of a living creature capable of producing fire vastly beyond conventional Fire Release naturally attracted attention.
Not admiration.
Not friendship.
Potential.
"What exactly is known about the dragon's flames?"
"Unknown."
"Color?"
"Red."
"Temperature?"
"Unknown."
"Chakra nature?"
Another pause.
"That is the interesting part." The senior intelligence officer's expression became serious. "According to the reports, the dragon's fire does not behave entirely like ordinary Katon."
Several Uchiha exchanged looks.
"Explain."
"Observers reported that it appeared to melt stone almost immediately. There were also descriptions of the flames continuing to burn through structures after the initial impact."
One of the older shinobi folded his arms. "That could simply mean an extremely powerful fire technique."
"Possibly."
"Or?"
The officer looked directly at him. "Something else."
Nobody spoke for several seconds. The possibility hung in the room.
Something else.
A different energy system.
A summon whose physiology naturally produced an extraordinary form of fire.
Or perhaps… a biological ability that shinobi could study.
One Uchiha's eyes narrowed. "If the creature can produce that kind of fire naturally…" He glanced toward the clan crest hanging on the wall. "…then its bloodline could be valuable."
The statement was blunt.
Another Uchiha immediately answered. "Assuming it has anything resembling a bloodline."
"Everything has a mechanism."
"Not necessarily one we understand."
"Which is precisely why it should be studied."
That word again.
Studied.
Not killed.
Not worshipped.
Studied.
The Uchiha were proud, but they were not foolish. They understood power. And the more experienced among them understood something else: power they did not understand was dangerous. Power they could understand… could potentially become theirs.
The Political Problem
One of the senior clan members finally spoke. "This is irrelevant."
Several heads turned.
He continued calmly. "Kyro is already considered an S-rank threat. Orochimaru attacked him and nearly died. The dragon defeated Manda. The fae reportedly manipulated the battlefield itself." His eyes hardened. "Why are we discussing how to acquire their techniques?"
Nobody answered immediately.
He looked around the room. "Because some of you are forgetting what the village is." His voice became colder. "We are at war."
That changed things.
Konoha was not merely a village. It was a military state surrounded by enemies. Every new weapon mattered. Every new technique mattered. Every unusual bloodline mattered. And the Uchiha knew this better than most. Their clan had been born from warfare. They had fought the Senju. They had helped establish Konoha. They had served as one of the village's primary military forces for generations. Their Sharingan made them exceptional combatants.
But even among the Uchiha, there were those who understood that their position inside Konoha was no longer what it had once been. The political atmosphere had become increasingly complicated. The police force remained under Uchiha control, yet trust between the clan and the village leadership was not absolute. There were whispers. Private disagreements. Political frustrations. Concerns about how the clan was perceived.
And beneath all of it sat one uncomfortable truth.
The Uchiha wanted to remain powerful.
Not merely respected.
Powerful.
If Kyro possessed something capable of producing a new form of fire… the clan would naturally wonder whether it could benefit them.
One particularly ambitious Uchiha finally said what several others were thinking. "If the dragon can be captured…"
The room became still.
"…we should study it."
The senior officer stared at him. "And how exactly do you propose capturing a creature that has survived battles against the Third Raikage?"
The ambitious Uchiha's expression tightened. He didn't answer. Because there was no good answer. The Third Raikage's reputation was legendary. If Kyro's dragon had fought against that monster and survived, then capturing it would not be a simple shinobi operation. It would require preparation. Sealing specialists. Sensory shinobi. Multiple Sharingan users. Perhaps even cooperation between clans. And most importantly… a plan designed specifically around the dragon.
One of the Uchiha elders slowly shook his head. "We are not sending our clan into a suicidal operation because some of you are fascinated by fire."
The ambitious shinobi lowered his eyes. "But…"
"No." The elder's Sharingan appeared, three tomoe, calm and absolute. "If the Hokage decides the creature must be dealt with, then the clan will obey the village's orders. But we will not throw Uchiha lives away chasing a rumor."
That was the difference between ambition and experience. The younger shinobi reluctantly nodded.

Elsewhere in the District
Not every Uchiha meeting was so restrained.
In another building, several younger elite shinobi had gathered privately. Their conversation was quieter. More speculative.
One of them drew a rough diagram on parchment, a dragon with wings, horns, and a massive mouth.
"Imagine it." His eyes gleamed. "If its fire is naturally produced rather than shaped entirely through chakra…"
Another Uchiha looked at the drawing. "We could learn something."
"Exactly."
"From what?"
"The mechanism." He tapped the drawing. "The chakra network of the creature. Its organs. Its relationship with fire. Its summoning contract." His expression became increasingly fascinated. "If the dragon's body possesses an organ responsible for producing that fire, imagine what could be learned."
Another Uchiha frowned. "You're talking like Orochimaru."
The room went quiet.
The first Uchiha's smile disappeared. "Careful."
The second didn't back down. "Orochimaru is exactly the sort of person who would dissect something simply because he could."
"I said study."
"You said organ."
A tense silence followed.
Then an older Uchiha interrupted. "Enough."
Everyone looked toward him. His expression was severe. "Do not confuse curiosity with wisdom." He looked at the drawing. "The dragon is not a laboratory specimen." A pause. "At least not yet."
Several eyes widened slightly.
The older Uchiha folded his arms. "If Orochimaru truly possesses a sample of the creature's body…" His gaze hardened. "…then the situation is already more serious than you realize."
The Hokage's Office
Elsewhere, another report reached Hiruzen Sarutobi.
The Third Hokage sat behind his desk, pipe resting between his fingers. The room was quiet. Several ANBU stood nearby.
Hiruzen slowly read the report. His expression remained calm, but his eyes became heavier with every line.
Orochimaru.
Kyro.
Miku.
Dreadbringer.
Manda.
Another battle.
Another escalation.
Hiruzen lowered the scroll. "So it continues."
One ANBU nodded. "Yes, Lord Hokage."
Hiruzen looked toward the window. Konoha's lights glittered beneath the night sky. The village appeared peaceful. But beneath that peace… every major clan was moving.
The Hyūga would have their own questions.
The Nara would already be analyzing the strategic implications.
The Aburame would be interested in the biological possibilities.
The Yamanaka would wonder about the mental nature of Miku's illusions.
The sealing specialists would be interested in the dragon.
And the Uchiha…
Hiruzen sighed quietly. "The Uchiha will want to know what makes its flames different."
The ANBU did not answer. They didn't need to.
Hiruzen knew his clans. He knew his village. And he knew that the greatest danger was not always an enemy attacking Konoha. Sometimes… it was what people *inside* Konoha decided they wanted.
He looked down at the report again. At the very bottom was a single sentence:
Orochimaru escaped with biological material believed to originate from the dragon.
Hiruzen's expression darkened. "Find out what he took."
"Yes, Lord Hokage."
"And…" Hiruzen paused. "Do not let Danzō move without my knowledge."
The ANBU hesitated, then bowed. "Understood."
The room became silent again.
Outside, the village continued sleeping—unaware that another invisible battle had already begun. Not between shinobi. Not between villages. But between those who wanted to understand Kyro… those who wanted to control him… and those who were beginning to wonder whether the dragon at his side could become something far more valuable than an enemy.
A weapon.
A source of power.
A new form of fire.
And somewhere deep beneath the village, behind sealed doors and hidden corridors, a Root operative was already carrying a report toward Danzō.
The dragon's name was written at the top.
Dreadbringer.
And beneath it:
Potential strategic value: EXTREME.
