Chapter 22 - A Hero's Fall

~o----------o~

The flames consuming Cheapsake burned against her skin, their relentless heat making every breath sting with smoke and ash. All around her, soldiers fought desperately to keep the fire from spreading deeper into the port city, their shouted orders nearly drowned out by the roar of collapsing buildings.

Then came the clash of blades, followed by the sharp cracks of revolvers cutting through the chaos.

Her eyes were drawn toward the source. Through the veil of smoke, Cody and Dwayne stood locked in combat. Every collision of their blades erupted in brilliant bursts of magic, illuminating the burning streets before fading beneath the inferno's orange glow. Shockwaves rippled across the shattered docks with each strike, scattering embers into the night as neither man gave an inch.

Another flash of magic illuminated the street, and that was when she saw them.

Luke's burned corpse lay motionless amid the wreckage while Julianne's hand protruded from beneath a mound of shattered rubble. Beside them, Meika clung desperately to Luke's lifeless hand, even as HATE clawed relentlessly at her own mind.

She moved toward the child anyway.

"Do not be afraid, little one," she whispered, brushing soot from Meika's face. "Cody will come back for you."

The child didn't respond. Her fingers remained locked around Luke's hand, refusing to let go no matter how gently they were pried away.

Another shockwave rolled through the street, lurching the ground beneath her knees as burning debris crashed around them. She instinctively threw herself over Meika, shielding the little girl from splintered timber and falling embers while the battle crept ever closer.

She couldn't stay here, yet she couldn't bring herself to leave the child.

Then, through the smoke, a familiar figure emerged.

Cody.

His uniform was scorched black, the fabric of his coat burned away in places until the protective vest beneath was plainly visible. Every movement carried the strain of a man who had already given more than his body should have allowed, yet his attention never left the child.

With a sweep of his hand, gravity surged through the smoke, hurling an unseen pursuer backward just long enough to clear a path. Cody crossed the ruined street with desperate urgency, dropping to one knee beside Meika without ever noticing the pair of hands that had been shielding her only moments before.

She stepped back without a word, allowing the smoke to swallow her once again.

Hidden behind its veil, she watched Cody carefully loosen Meika's grip on Luke's lifeless hand before lifting the unconscious girl into his arms. Despite the inferno raging around him, his touch remained impossibly gentle, as though he feared that even the slightest carelessness would shatter what little she had left.

Without looking back, he disappeared into the burning streets.

Moments later, Dwayne emerged from the haze, following at an unhurried pace as the flames seemed to part before him.

She remained hidden behind the smoke, scarcely daring to breathe as the inferno swallowed them both. Only flashes of blue gravity and crimson flame betrayed where they had gone, each collision shaking the ruined streets hard enough to send loose masonry tumbling from fractured buildings.

Soon she could no longer make out their movements, only the violence of their magic.

The sharp crack of a revolver echoed across the harbor before another explosion shook the ground beneath her feet. Fire burst skyward while a wave of distorted stone rippled through the street, scattering debris in every direction.

She searched the smoke for any sign of Meika but found only fire and drifting ash.

Then Dwayne's voice carried clearly through the burning air.

"She will not escape what is coming, Rivera."

The words settled over her with a weight that had nothing to do with the smoke.

Escape?

He wasn't talking about the fire.

Another surge of flame answered whatever Cody had done beyond the veil, forcing her to shield her face as burning embers drifted past like dying stars. Though the duel continued somewhere beyond her sight, it no longer felt like two men fighting. It felt as though the city itself was being torn apart around them.

Then another voice broke through the chaos.

"Aid the General!"

Federal soldiers poured into the district from every direction, their silhouettes emerging through the haze as riflemen and battlemages rushed toward the center of the destruction. Orders rang out in rapid succession while luminous binding arrays spread across the broken streets, weaving through rubble and scorched stone until the thunder of magic finally began to subside.

Through the thinning smoke, she caught one final glimpse.

Cody staggered as soldiers rushed to support him, his burned uniform barely holding together. Meika had already been carried farther behind the line, surrounded by medics shielding her from the devastation. Across from them, Dwayne stood motionless within a lattice of binding light, offering no resistance as he watched the scene unfold.

"This does not change what she has already seen."

His words lingered long after the flames began to die.

Around her, soldiers celebrated the capture, relief spreading through exhausted voices as the battle finally came to an end. She couldn't join them. Her eyes remained fixed on the place where Meika had disappeared, and for reasons she couldn't explain, Dwayne's final words unsettled her far more than his defeat reassured her.

Silence gradually settled over the ruined street as soldiers lowered their weapons. Some embraced one another in exhausted relief while others hurried toward the wounded, calling for medics as the binding arrays continued to hum beneath the rubble.

The battle was over.

It should have felt like a victory.

Instead, her gaze drifted across the blackened remains of Cheapsake. Homes had become ash, families wandered the streets calling names that would never be answered, Luke still lay where he had fallen, and Julianne had yet to be pulled from the wreckage.

Is this victory?

The thought struck so suddenly that she recoiled from it.

No.

It wasn't hers.

She knew that.

Yet it lingered. One man captured.

Hundreds dead.

Tell me which one matters more.

Her hands trembled as the familiar pressure coiled around her thoughts like unseen fingers.

It had never spoken so clearly before.

She squeezed her eyes shut, forcing herself to breathe through the smoke.

"No..."

The whisper barely escaped her lips.

When she opened her eyes again, the city hadn't changed. The dead remained where they had fallen. The child had been saved. Their Republic had won.

Why, then, did it feel as though something far more important had been lost?
