Chapter 27 - Chapter 27: A castle to the west.

That night, Caspian slept near the fire.

The flames crackled softly in the spherical coral chamber, casting warm orange light across the curved walls. Outside, beyond the coral tower, the dark ocean had returned completely, swallowing the crimson labyrinth beneath a silent, endless tide.

But here, high above the waterline, the world felt strangely peaceful.

Caspian lay on the rough coral floor with his back against the wall, the gentle warmth of the fire radiating across the polished plates of his armor. The Moonlight Crown Armor naturally retained heat, creating a comfortable cocoon that slowly lulled him toward sleep.

Across the fire, Alice slept inside her sleeping bag.

She had wrapped herself tightly inside the strange Memory, only her head visible above the padded rim. Her breathing was slow and steady, her expression completely relaxed.

She looked like a normal girl going to camp outside.

And for the first time since arriving in this terrible world—

Caspian dreamed.

Sleep here was usually empty.

But that night, something stirred inside his mind.

His dream began in darkness.

A vast, silent void stretched endlessly in every direction.

Floating in the center of that void was the Stargaze.

The compass rotated slowly in the air, its metallic surface glowing faintly with silver light. The arrow trembled softly, as if reacting to invisible currents.

Then it moved.

Click.

The sound echoed through the void.

The arrow rotated slightly.

Click.

Another adjustment.

Again.

Click.

Each movement rang through the emptiness like the ticking of some enormous cosmic clock.

The arrow continued turning, little by little.

West.

Southwest.

West again.

Finally—

It stopped.

CLACK.

The sound was louder this time.

Final.

And the vision changed.

Suddenly Caspian stood above a ruined city.

Massive walls of ancient stone surrounded it completely, rising high into the gray sky like the defenses of some forgotten kingdom. The walls were scarred and weathered by time, but they remained unbroken.

Inside the city, the streets twisted in narrow, chaotic patterns.

Monsters wandered those streets.

Dozens of them.

Shadowy shapes prowled through broken houses and collapsed towers. Strange creatures crawled across rooftops or stalked silently through alleyways.

The city was dangerous.

Overwhelmingly dangerous.

Yet at its center—

There was something else.

A hill rose above the ruined districts.

And on top of that hill stood a castle.

The structure was magnificent.

Tall stone towers reached toward the sky. Thick defensive walls surrounded a vast courtyard.

But what truly caught Caspian's attention was this:

There were no monsters inside the castle.

Instead—

There were people.

Dozens of them.

Awakened for sure.

They moved along the battlements, guarded the gates, gathered in the courtyard. Some carried weapons, others spoke quietly in groups.

It was a refuge.

A sanctuary.

A place where humans had survived.

Caspian tried to focus, trying to see more.

For a brief moment—

He thought he saw something else.

Something important.

But before he could understand what it was—

The dream shattered.

Caspian woke up.

The coral chamber returned.

The fire had burned low during the night, glowing red beneath soft layers of ash.

Morning light filtered faintly through the openings in the coral sphere.

For a moment, Caspian simply sat there.

The dream lingered in his mind.

Fragments of it felt important.

But the final detail…

The one thing he had almost seen—

Was gone.

Like a word on the tip of his tongue that refused to form.

Alice stirred inside her sleeping bag.

A few minutes later they shared breakfast — a luxury in a place like this.

Cooked crab meat from yesterday's hunt.

Salty, filling, surprisingly good.

Once they finished eating, Caspian cleared his throat.

"I had a dream."

Alice looked up immediately.

"Here?"

"Yes."

Her eyes widened slightly.

That was rare.

He continued.

"There is a safe place to the west."

She leaned forward.

"A ruined city surrounded by walls… and at the center of it, a castle full of people."

Hope flickered in her expression.

Before they departed, Alice opened the small algae pouch where they had been storing the Soul Shards gathered from their kills.

Sixteen small crystalline fragments glittered in her hands.

She looked at him.

"Should we split them fifty–fifty?"

Caspian summoned his runes.

---

[Moonlight Fragments: 171]

---

He didn't need them.

He closed the runes and shook his head.

"You should keep them."

Alice blinked.

"What?"

"You'll need them more than me. Your army consumes resources."

She stared at the shards for a moment before sighing.

"Why did my Aspect have to be literal pay-to-play…"

Still, she nodded gratefully and took the shards.

With their supplies gathered and the water below finally receding, they descended the coral tower and resumed their march.

This time—

They moved faster.

The promise of a refuge gave them direction.

Hope.

The crimson labyrinth passed more quickly beneath their feet.

More Carapace Scavengers appeared along the way.

More fights.

More shattered shells.

More pools of glowing azure blood.

After Alice's soldiers finished killing one particularly large scavenger, she examined the Soul Shard in her hand thoughtfully.

Then she glanced at Caspian.

"These are Awakened Beasts."

He nodded.

"And we're just Sleepers."

She gestured toward the battlefield behind them.

"A normal Sleeper shouldn't be able to kill even one of these."

She looked back at him.

"And yet we've killed at least two dozen."

Her gaze narrowed slightly.

"I can do it because of my army."

She pointed at him.

"But you?"

"How are you killing them by just smashing their heads?"

Caspian smiled faintly.

"I might be stronger than most."

He tapped the silver plates of his armor.

"And I have sturdy equipment."

Alice stared at him for a few seconds.

Then she sighed.

"That explanation feels incomplete."

They continued walking.

Velpam appeared beside Caspian shortly afterward.

The shadow's voice was unusually serious.

"That's the problem."

Caspian didn't look at him.

"You've only fought creatures weaker than you."

Velpam crossed his arms.

"You rely on raw power."

"And armor."

"And luck."

Caspian remained silent.

"Someday" Velpam continued softly "you will meet something equal to you."

"Or stronger."

"And when that happens…"

"You won't know what to do."

The shadow looked toward the horizon.

"You know nothing about the world beyond your pond."

Caspian frowned.

Velpam wasn't wrong.

He had simply overwhelmed everything so far.

What if that stopped working?

Velpam noticed the doubt.

A smile slowly appeared.

"You know…"

"I could teach you."

Caspian glanced at him.

Velpam's eyes gleamed.

"I am different from you."

"I have experience."

"I understand combat."

"There are many things I could teach you."

He leaned closer.

"But there is one thing I cannot give you."

Caspian raised an eyebrow.

"Your will."

The word felt strangely heavy.

"If we fought right now" Velpam continued calmly "I would win."

"Not just because I am more skilled, even though i am."

"Not just because my Aspect is more suited for combat."

He tapped Caspian's chest lightly.

"My will is stronger."

Caspian frowned and talked in low voice.

"What do you mean?"

Velpam chuckled softly.

"Your will is simple."

"Go back home."

"Return to your parents."

"Live peacefully."

He shook his head.

"Such a weak will."

Caspian stiffened.

"If you achieve that goal… what then?"

Silence.

Velpam smiled wider.

"Exactly."

"Your will ends there."

He leaned closer, whispering.

"I could take your place."

Caspian froze.

"I'm not like you."

"If you let me control the body…"

"I could solve everything."

Velpam extended his hand.

"You could sleep peacefully in your soul."

"I would fight."

"I would survive."

"And when it's all over…"

"You would wake up at home."

"Already an Awakened, just image the proud face of dad."

The offer lingered heavily.

Caspian hesitated.

Maybe…

Maybe Velpam was right.

Up ahead, he heard the heartbeats of several scavengers.

Three of them.

He exhaled slowly.

"Two minutes."

Velpam's grin widened instantly.

"Oh?"

He extended his hand eagerly.

"Is it finally my turn?"

Caspian grabbed it.

The world shifted.

Shadow and master swapped places.

Velpam stood in control.

He turned back toward Alice.

"Hey!"

She looked up from examining the bodies of two scavengers.

"There are more ahead."

He smiled brightly.

"I'll take care of them."

Alice nodded.

"If it gets dangerous, call us."

Caspian? laughed softly.

"It won't be necessary."

He ran forward.

Soon he reached the clearing.

Three scavengers fought viciously over a half-rotted carcass.

Velpam stepped into the open.

"Let me show you true potential, murderer."

His armor shimmered.

The Moonlight Crown Armor shifted shape.

Heavy plates melted away into a lighter, elegant garment designed for speed.

The first scavenger noticed him and charged, after being beaten by its kin, it was hungry.

Velpam summoned the Blood Pond.

Transcendent blood rose into the air.

It solidified into a crimson sword.

The creature's pincers snapped toward him—

But before they could touch him—

The two crescent moons on the crown expanded and shot forward.

SHRRK.

Both pincers were severed at the elbows.

Velpam leapt.

One perfect slash.

The scavenger's head separated cleanly from its body.

Azure blood erupted into the air.

The crescents shrank and returned to the crown.

The remaining two creatures rushed him simultaneously.

Velpam smiled.

He ran toward them.

At the last second—

He slid beneath their bodies.

His blood sword split into a curved double blade.

One sweeping motion.

SHRRAAACK.

All sixteen legs fell away at once.

The creatures collapsed.

Velpam stood and turned around to them.

Jumped.

The double blade split into two piercing swords.

Two simultaneous thrusts.

Both skulls were pierced cleanly.

The scavengers died instantly.

Velpam landed lightly on the ground.

Right on time.

---

[Your shadow grows deeper.]

[And so your Moonlight grows brighter.]

---

Velpam laughed.

"Oh this is going to be fun."

Velpam smiled when he felt being pulled back inside their souls.

And Caspian remained on the Battlefield.
