Chapter 61 - Seasoned with love

🍽️ Seasoned with Love

Season 4, Episode 6 — "Lines You Don't Cross… Until You Do"

The hallway creak didn't go unnoticed this time.

Amara's eyes flicked toward the door.

Luke followed her gaze.

Silence.

Heavy.

Aware.

"Did you hear that?" she whispered.

Luke nodded slowly, his jaw tightening just a bit.

"Yeah."

For a second, neither of them moved.

That fragile moment they'd been holding…

It didn't break.

But it changed.

Luke let go of her hand reluctantly.

"I'll check it out," he said.

Amara hesitated, then nodded.

"Okay."

He stepped toward the door, opening it carefully.

The hallway was empty.

Or at least… it looked that way.

But just around the corner

Rose stood still, back pressed lightly against the wall, breath controlled.

Waiting.

Listening.

Luke stepped out fully now, scanning the hallway.

Nothing.

He frowned.

Behind him, Amara shifted, gently laying the baby down in the crib.

Her movements were quieter now. More cautious.

Like instinct was telling her something had changed.

Luke came back in, closing the door halfway.

"Probably nothing," he said.

But his tone didn't fully believe that.

Amara looked at him.

"You don't sound convinced."

"I'm not," he admitted.

A pause.

Then

He exhaled.

Shook it off.

Or at least tried to.

"Where were we?" he asked, softer now.

Amara didn't answer right away.

She walked back toward him slowly.

Measured.

"You were about to stop running," she said.

Luke let out a small breath.

"Right."

Now they were close again.

Not as unaware as before.

But maybe more intentional.

"You sure you're ready for that?" she asked.

Not teasing.

Not challenging.

Just… real.

Luke didn't hesitate this time.

"Yeah."

And this time

When he reached for her

There was no pause.

His hand came up gently, brushing against her arm first.

Giving her time.

A choice.

She didn't pull away.

That was all it took.

His fingers slid up, resting lightly at her waist.

Careful.

Respectful.

But steady.

Amara's breath hitched.

Just slightly.

"Luke…" she started.

But whatever she was going to say—

Didn't come out.

Because he stepped closer.

And this time…

She met him halfway.

The space between them disappeared.

And just like that

The tension that had been building for weeks

Finally snapped.

Their lips met.

Soft at first.

Testing.

Like neither of them wanted to rush it.

But then

It deepened.

Not out of urgency.

But out of something that had been held back too long.

Amara's hand came up, resting lightly against his chest.

And Luke

Yeah.

He felt that.

Every bit of it.

For a moment

Nothing else existed.

Not the restaurant.

Not the pressure.

Not the past.

Just them.

And then

The baby stirred.

They pulled apart instantly.

Not dramatically.

But just enough to breathe again.

To think.

Amara turned slightly, instinct kicking in.

But the baby settled almost immediately.

She let out a small breath.

Then turned back to Luke.

Neither of them spoke right away.

Because what do you even say after that?

Luke ran a hand through his hair, a quiet, almost disbelieving laugh escaping him.

"Well…"

Amara raised an eyebrow, though her lips were still slightly parted.

"That's all you've got?"

He shook his head.

"No. I just"

He looked at her.

Really looked at her.

"I've wanted to do that for a while."

Amara crossed her arms lightly, but there was no real defense behind it.

"I figured."

"Oh, you figured?"

She gave him a look.

"You're not exactly subtle, Luke."

He smirked slightly.

"Good to know."

But then

The weight of it came back.

Because this?

This wasn't small.

"We can't pretend that didn't just happen," he said.

Amara shook her head.

"We're not."

Another pause.

"But we also can't let it mess everything up," she added.

Luke's expression shifted.

"That's not what I want."

"Me neither," she said quietly.

Their eyes locked again.

And this time

It wasn't about tension.

It was about understanding.

"We take it slow," Amara said.

"Slow," Luke agreed.

"And we keep the kitchen… the kitchen."

He nodded.

"Professional."

She gave him a look.

"You think you can manage that?"

He smirked.

"Yeah. I've got discipline."

She laughed softly.

"Sure you do."

And just like that

They had something.

Undefined.

Unspoken.

But real.

Downstairs

Rose finally moved.

Her heels clicked softly against the floor as she walked back into the kitchen.

Empty now.

Dark.

She flipped on a light.

The room didn't feel the same.

Not anymore.

She leaned against the counter, arms crossed, replaying what she'd seen.

What she'd heard.

Her jaw tightened.

"So that's what we're doing now…" she muttered.

Rose wasn't stupid.

She knew exactly what that moment upstairs meant.

It wasn't just a kiss.

It was a shift.

And if there was one thing Rose didn't like

It was losing control of the situation.

Her eyes moved slowly across the kitchen.

Thinking.

Planning.

"Alright…" she said quietly.

A slow smile crept onto her face.

But it wasn't playful.

Not this time.

"If that's the game…"

She pushed herself off the counter.

"Let's play."

🌅 The Next Morning

The kitchen was alive again.

Orders flying.

Pans clanging.

Voices sharp and focused.

Amara stood at the prep station, completely locked in.

Professional.

Calm.

Like nothing had changed.

Luke moved across the line like usual.

Calling orders.

Checking plates.

Focused.

But every now and then

Their eyes met.

Just for a second.

And that second?

Said everything.

Rose noticed.

Of course she did.

She watched the timing.

The glances.

The energy.

Subtle.

But not invisible.

And Rose?

She had always been good at reading people.

Too good.

She stepped up beside Luke suddenly.

Close.

Closer than necessary.

"Careful," she said casually, adjusting a plate in front of him.

"You're slipping."

Luke frowned slightly.

"I've got it."

Rose leaned in just a little more.

Lowering her voice.

"Do you?"

That got his attention.

He turned to look at her.

And for a split second

Something passed between them.

A challenge.

Then she smiled.

Like nothing happened.

And walked away.

Luke watched her go.

His jaw tight.

Across the kitchen,

Amara saw it.

And just like that,

The calm?

Didn't feel so calm anymore.
