Seasoned With Love
Season 4 – Episode 4: "The Moment That Shook Him"
Amara's POV
Dinner rush was in full swing.
The restaurant was buzzing the way it always did when everything worked just right—plates moving, laughter at the tables, Marcus narrating his espresso machine like it was a professional athlete.
And right in the middle of it all…
My baby was asleep in the small bassinet Carl had set up beside the host stand.
Marcus had insisted on calling it "the executive crib."
Rose had told him to stop talking.
Carl had quietly built it anyway.
I checked on the baby between tables. His tiny chest rose and fell peacefully.
Marcus leaned over the counter and whispered like a spy.
"Status report?"
"Sleeping," I said.
Marcus nodded seriously.
"Excellent. Tiny boss conserving energy."
Luke came out of the kitchen carrying two plates.
He glanced toward the bassinet automatically.
He had been doing that all evening.
Checking.
Watching.
Making sure everything was okay.
Rose noticed it too.
"Luke," she said calmly, "table four."
Luke nodded and delivered the food.
But as he passed the bassinet he paused again.
Just a quick glance.
Then back to work.
The evening kept moving.
Orders.
Laughter.
The comfortable rhythm of a busy restaurant.
Then suddenly.
The baby coughed.
A small sound.
But sharp.
My head snapped toward the bassinet.
Marcus froze mid-sentence.
The baby coughed again.
Luke was already moving.
He reached the bassinet before I did.
"Amara."
His voice was tight.
The baby's face had turned a little red.
He made a strange choking sound.
Marcus whispered,
"Oh no."
My heart dropped.
I lifted him carefully.
"It's okay, sweetheart…"
But he coughed again, harder.
Luke's calm vanished instantly.
"Is he breathing?"
"Yes—"
"Are you sure?"
"Yes, Luke."
But Luke was already pacing beside me.
"We need a doctor."
Rose stepped closer.
"Luke, relax—"
"No."
His voice was sharp now.
Too sharp.
Carl looked concerned.
"It's probably just milk or saliva."
Luke shook his head.
"No, that's not normal."
The baby suddenly let out a loud cry.
Then another.
Then he started breathing normally again.
Just crying.
Loud and strong.
Marcus exhaled dramatically.
"Oh thank goodness."
I gently rocked him.
"It's okay… it's okay."
Within seconds the coughing stopped.
The baby calmed down.
His tiny fingers grabbed my shirt.
Everything was normal again.
But Luke was still tense.
Still scanning the baby's face.
"You're sure he's okay?"
"Yes," I said softly.
Rose placed a hand on Luke's shoulder.
"He's fine."
Luke ran a hand through his hair.
The restaurant slowly returned to normal around us.
Customers went back to eating.
Marcus whispered to Carl,
"I aged five years."
Carl nodded.
"Same."
After a few minutes I carried the baby upstairs to settle him.
When I came back down…
Luke was outside.
Standing alone near the back alley door.
Rose noticed it too.
"I'll handle the floor," she said quietly.
Then she stepped outside.
Luke was leaning against the brick wall, staring at the ground.
Rose crossed her arms.
"You scared the customers."
Luke didn't answer.
Rose softened her voice slightly.
"You scared yourself too."
Luke finally spoke.
"He stopped breathing for a second."
Rose shook her head gently.
"He coughed."
Luke looked frustrated.
"That's not the point."
Rose studied him carefully.
"What is the point?"
Luke exhaled slowly.
"I couldn't think."
Rose nodded.
"I noticed."
Luke leaned back against the wall.
"I've dealt with investors, lawsuits, business collapses… but that?"
He shook his head.
"That terrified me."
Rose said quietly,
"Because you care."
Luke looked at her.
"Of course I care."
Rose gave him a knowing look.
"No."
She stepped closer.
"You're attached."
Luke frowned.
"That's different."
Rose smiled slightly.
"No, it's not."
Luke stared down the alley for a long moment.
Finally he admitted something quietly.
"I didn't expect it."
"What?"
"This feeling."
Rose leaned against the wall beside him.
"Luke… you look at that baby like he already belongs to you."
Luke didn't answer.
Rose continued gently.
"And you look at Amara the same way."
Luke rubbed the back of his neck.
"That's complicated."
Rose laughed softly.
"No, it's actually very simple."
Luke glanced at her.
"You're falling in love with them."
Luke went quiet.
The city lights flickered around them.
The sounds of the restaurant drifted through the back door.
Rose pushed away from the wall.
"You can deny it if you want."
Luke asked quietly,
"What if I'm not ready for that?"
Rose smiled.
"Too late."
She started walking back inside.
But before she reached the door she added one last thing.
"Just don't run from it."
Luke stood there alone for a while longer.
Thinking.
Inside the restaurant Marcus was explaining something loudly about baby safety regulations.
Carl was pretending to understand.
And upstairs…
Amara was rocking the baby back to sleep.
Luke finally stepped back inside.
He looked toward the stairs.
And for the first time…
He realized something Rose already knew.
He wasn't just protecting the restaurant anymore.
He was protecting a family.
