Chapter 57 - seasoned with Love

Seasoned With Love

Season 4 – Episode 2: "Small Miracles"

For the first time in weeks…

The restaurant wasn't the loudest place in my life.

The baby was.

I sat on the couch in the apartment above the restaurant, gently rocking the tiny bundle in my arms while soft morning light came through the window.

"Okay," I whispered to him, "you win."

He blinked up at me with those wide curious eyes babies have when they're still trying to figure out the world.

Three months.

My son was three months old.

And somehow my entire life had changed faster than I could keep track of.

Downstairs, I could hear faint kitchen sounds starting.

Marcus was probably already arguing with the espresso machine.

Some traditions never change.

The baby made a soft little noise.

"Are you hungry again?" I asked.

A knock came on the door before I could move.

"Amara?" Rose's voice called softly.

"Come in."

Rose stepped inside carrying a small bag.

Her eyes immediately softened when she saw the baby.

"Well hello there, little boss."

She walked over and gently touched his tiny hand.

"He's getting bigger."

I smiled.

"Every day."

Rose handed me the bag.

"I brought breakfast."

I peeked inside.

Fresh pastries.

Marcus's doing.

"Thank you."

Rose sat beside me.

"How are you really doing?"

I thought about it for a moment.

"Tired."

Rose laughed quietly.

"That's parenthood."

The baby started fussing a little.

Rose gently rocked the bassinet beside us.

"You're doing a great job, you know."

"Some days it doesn't feel like it."

Rose looked at me kindly.

"It never does."

Just then heavy footsteps came pounding up the stairs.

Marcus burst through the door holding a coffee cup.

"Emergency caffeine delivery!"

He stopped mid-step when he saw the baby looking at him.

"Oh wow."

He whispered suddenly.

"Tiny human awake."

Rose shook her head.

"You're ridiculous."

Marcus tiptoed closer like he was approaching a wild animal.

"Good morning, future restaurant owner."

The baby blinked.

Marcus gasped.

"Did you see that?! He looked at me!"

Rose smirked.

"Babies look at everything."

Marcus crouched down.

"No, that was recognition."

I laughed.

"You've met him three times."

Marcus pointed proudly.

"Still counts."

He handed me the coffee.

"Luke made sure you got this."

Rose raised an eyebrow.

"Luke made coffee?"

Marcus shrugged.

"Okay technically he supervised."

That made me smile.

Luke had been busy lately.

The restaurant.

The expansion plans.

The situation with Victoria Hale.

But he still checked on me every day.

Marcus leaned closer to the baby.

"So what's the plan today?"

I shrugged.

"Survive."

Rose nodded.

"Good plan."

Marcus tilted his head.

"You know… eventually you might want to bring him downstairs."

I blinked.

"To the restaurant?"

Marcus grinned.

"Yeah."

Rose nodded thoughtfully.

"He'll grow up around it."

Marcus pointed.

"Exactly. Future chef training starts early."

I looked down at my son.

Tiny fingers wrapped around mine.

"I don't know if I want that life for him."

Rose asked gently,

"What life?"

"The constant stress."

Marcus scratched his head.

"Fair point."

Rose leaned back in her chair.

"But he'll also grow up around love."

Marcus nodded.

"And really good food."

I laughed softly.

That was true.

The baby suddenly let out a tiny squeak.

Marcus gasped again.

"Did he just talk?"

Rose rolled her eyes.

"That was a yawn."

Marcus looked proud anyway.

"Still counts."

Another knock came at the door.

This time slower.

Luke stepped in.

He paused immediately when he saw the baby awake.

"Well."

Marcus whispered,

"Dad energy activated."

Luke walked closer quietly.

"How's he doing?"

I smiled.

"Hungry. Curious. Loud."

Marcus pointed.

"Definitely loud."

Luke gently touched the baby's tiny hand.

The baby grabbed his finger instantly.

Marcus whispered dramatically,

"Bonding moment."

Luke smiled slightly.

"He's strong."

Rose stood.

"I should get back downstairs."

Marcus nodded.

"Coffee crisis waiting."

They headed for the door.

But Marcus stopped before leaving.

"One thing though."

We all looked at him.

"When this kid starts crawling…"

He pointed downstairs.

"We're baby-proofing the entire restaurant."

Luke chuckled.

"Good idea."

Marcus grinned.

"I'm serious. He's basically family now."

After they left, the room grew quiet again.

Luke sat beside me.

For a moment we just watched the baby breathing peacefully.

"You're amazing with him," Luke said.

I looked at him.

"I'm still learning."

Luke nodded.

"That never stops."

I hesitated before asking something that had been on my mind.

"Does it scare you?"

Luke looked surprised.

"What?"

"Raising him around all of this."

The restaurant.

The business battles.

Everything.

Luke thought about it carefully.

"Yes."

I appreciated the honesty.

"But," he continued, "I also think he'll grow up seeing something important."

"What?"

"That people can build something good together."

I looked down at my son again.

His tiny chest rising and falling.

Peaceful.

Safe.

Luke stood after a moment.

"I should head downstairs."

"Busy day?"

"Always."

He paused at the door.

"Bring him down later if you want."

I smiled.

"Maybe."

Luke left quietly.

I sat there for a long time holding the baby.

Listening to the sounds of the restaurant below.

Laughter.

Plates.

Life.

My son stirred again and opened his eyes.

"Looks like you're ready for the world," I whispered.

And for the first time since he was born…

I realized something.

The restaurant wasn't just Luke's dream anymore.

It was part of our family's story now.

And somehow that felt exactly right.
