Seasoned With Love
Season 3 – Episode 9: "The Man Who Knew Luke Before"
Amara's POV
The restaurant felt different after the interview aired.
Not quieter.
Just watched.
Phones kept buzzing all morning.
Reservations went up.
Messages coming in.
Some supportive.
Some curious.
Some… a little too interested.
Marcus walked into the office holding the tablet.
"Okay, good news first."
I looked up.
"I like good news."
"The interview is trending locally."
Rose nodded from the doorway.
"People loved what you said about second chances."
Luke was standing near the window reading emails.
Calm like always.
But I could tell something was on his mind.
Marcus kept scrolling.
"And the bad news?"
Marcus sighed.
"Some business people are asking questions about Luke again."
Rose crossed her arms.
"They were always going to."
Luke finally looked up.
"That's fine."
I studied him.
"You're not worried?"
"I expected it."
Before I could ask more, the front door opened.
And the room shifted.
Not because someone loud walked in.
But because Luke suddenly went very still.
I turned to look.
A man walked in.
Tall.
Sharp suit.
Older than Luke.
Confident in the kind of way that comes from power.
Marcus leaned toward Rose.
"Another suit."
Rose nodded.
"This one feels different."
The man looked around the restaurant once.
Then directly at Luke.
And smiled slightly.
"Well… look at you."
Luke didn't smile back.
"Evan."
I looked at Luke.
"You know him."
The man walked closer.
"Know him?" he said. "We practically built half our careers together."
That got my attention.
Luke's tone stayed calm but careful.
"What are you doing here?"
Evan glanced around the restaurant again.
"Watching the interview made me curious."
Marcus whispered,
"I don't trust curious people in suits."
Rose whispered back,
"Me neither."
Evan looked at me.
"And you must be Amara."
I nodded slowly.
"Yes."
He smiled politely.
"I've heard a lot about you."
Something about the way he said that made me uneasy.
Luke stepped slightly closer to me without even realizing he did it.
Protective.
Evan noticed.
Interesting.
"So," Evan said, "this is the place Luke chose."
Luke's voice lowered slightly.
"Yes."
Evan tilted his head.
"You really left all of it behind for this?"
Marcus spoke up before Luke could answer.
"This 'place' feeds families."
Rose added calmly,
"And changes lives."
Evan looked at them both.
Then back at Luke.
"I can see you've built a loyal team."
Luke didn't react to that.
"What do you want, Evan?"
Straight to the point.
I liked that.
Evan smiled slightly.
"I want to talk."
Luke didn't move.
"About what?"
Evan lowered his voice just a bit.
"About the company."
Marcus whispered,
"Yeah I definitely don't like this guy."
Rose nodded.
I looked at Luke.
"You didn't tell me about him."
Luke answered quietly.
"I was going to."
Evan raised an eyebrow.
"Ah. So she doesn't know everything yet."
Luke's eyes sharpened slightly.
"That's enough."
That was the first time I'd seen Luke's voice carry that edge.
Real edge.
Evan lifted his hands slightly.
"Relax. I'm not here to cause problems."
Marcus muttered,
"That's exactly what people say before causing problems."
Evan ignored him.
"I'm here because the board is watching what you're doing, Luke."
Luke crossed his arms.
"I expected that."
"But now they're interested again."
Luke frowned slightly.
"Interested how?"
Evan glanced at me again.
"Let's just say… some people believe you're wasting your potential."
That word again.
Potential.
Luke's tone was steady.
"I decide what my potential is used for."
Evan studied him carefully.
"You always were stubborn."
Rose leaned slightly toward me and whispered,
"He definitely knew Luke before this version of him."
I nodded.
I could see that too.
Evan stepped closer to Luke.
"They're offering you a chance to come back."
That got everyone's attention.
Marcus blinked.
"Wait what?"
Rose looked surprised too.
"You're serious?"
Luke didn't react right away.
"What kind of offer?"
Evan smiled slightly.
"A very big one."
Silence filled the room.
Then Evan said something that changed everything.
"You could expand this restaurant into something national."
My heart skipped a beat.
Luke didn't look excited.
He looked cautious.
"What's the catch?"
Evan smiled again.
"You come back into leadership."
Marcus shook his head immediately.
"Nope."
Rose muttered,
"That sounds complicated."
I looked at Luke.
He hadn't moved.
Evan continued.
"You'd still keep the restaurant. But your time… your focus… would shift again."
I understood immediately what he was saying.
Luke wouldn't be here like he is now.
Not really.
I asked quietly,
"Why now?"
Evan answered honestly.
"Because Luke is good at building things."
Then he looked directly at Luke.
"And because loyalty is admirable… but influence is powerful."
That sentence hung heavy in the room.
Testing him.
I could feel it.
Luke finally spoke.
"I already chose where my influence goes."
Evan studied him carefully.
"Yes… but have you told Amara everything yet?"
My eyes moved slowly to Luke.
Luke didn't look away from Evan.
But I could tell something had just surfaced.
Something from his past.
Something I didn't fully know yet.
Marcus whispered,
"Oh boy."
Rose folded her arms.
"This just got interesting."
Evan smiled slightly.
"I'll give you time to think."
Luke's answer came quickly.
"I don't need time."
But Evan shook his head.
"You might."
Then he said one last thing before walking toward the door.
"Because the past has a way of catching up, Luke."
The door closed behind him.
And the restaurant felt very quiet again.
I turned to Luke.
Slowly.
"Okay."
Luke looked at me.
"Yes."
"We're going to talk."
Marcus nodded immediately.
"Definitely."
Rose agreed.
"Absolutely."
Luke sighed slightly.
"Yes. We are."
And I had a feeling this conversation was going to reveal a lot more about the man I was about to build a future with.
