Chapter 16 - Awakening

What Iria didn't know was that Riven was also lying in a hospital bed at that very moment.

Naturally, he couldn't answer the call.

The chaos didn't finally end until four or five in the morning.

That night, Magic City's hospitals were overwhelmed, with injured people being sent in one after another.

At Magic City People's First Hospital, inside a single-patient ward, Uncle Corin, Aunt Liora, and Lyra were all present.

All three of them were asleep.

Uncle Corin and Aunt Liora sat on the sofa, Aunt Liora leaning against Uncle Corin's shoulder as they slept. Lyra was slumped over at Kael's bedside, asleep as well, faint tear marks still visible at the corners of her eyes—she had clearly been crying.

As for why they were here—

After the Magic Abyss incident was resolved, the authorities had notified Uncle Corin's family.

When they heard Kael had been injured and hospitalized, Father Orion and Mother Faye nearly fainted on the spot.

Only after being reassured repeatedly did they rush to the hospital. Upon learning that Kael's life was no longer in danger, they finally breathed a sigh of relief.

They also expressed their heartfelt thanks to Lin Dawei, who stayed only briefly before leaving.

As for why only Uncle Corin, Aunt Liora, and Lyra remained—

Father Orion and Mother Faye were elderly, so Uncle Corin asked Uncle Darius to send them home. With Kael out of danger, there was no need for so many people to keep vigil at the hospital.

The two elders had been reluctant to leave, but after much persuasion, they finally went home unwillingly.

When the first rays of morning sunlight streamed through the window, Kael slowly opened his tightly shut eyes.

After adjusting to the brightness, he took in his surroundings.

The smell of disinfectant told him immediately where he was.

Seeing the Poké Balls on the bedside table, he finally relaxed.

Good… Corviknight is fine.

He'd known the night before that Corviknight had been injured as well. Facing two Skarmory, getting hurt had been unavoidable.

As if sensing his thoughts, one of the Poké Balls trembled slightly in response.

Kael chuckled softly.

He then turned his head and saw Lyra still asleep beside the bed. He didn't wake her, but when he noticed the tear stains at the corner of her eyes, his heart tightened.

She was the little sister he'd doted on since childhood. He hated seeing her cry.

Creak—

The door opened. Uncle Corin and Aunt Liora walked in carrying breakfast.

They immediately put the food down when they saw Kael awake.

"Kael, you're awake! That's wonderful. You really scared us last night," Uncle Corin said.

"Yes, it was far too dangerous," Aunt Liora added.

Hearing their concern warmed Kael's heart. Just as he was about to speak, a clear, excited voice rang out—

"Brother!"

Before he could react, Lyra had already thrown herself into his arms.

"Wuwuwu… Brother, I was so scared. I thought I'd never see you again…" she sobbed.

Kael froze for a moment, then gently patted her back.

"Good girl, don't cry. Brother's fine. Last night was just a small accident. I promise it won't happen again."

Gradually, Lyra stopped crying, though she still clung tightly to him.

After a while, she looked up at him with tear-filled eyes.

Kael sat up slightly and wiped her tears away with a soft smile.

"Alright. Let's make a pinky promise—one hundred years, no breaking it."

He hooked his little finger.

Lyra smiled through her tears and hooked hers with his.

"Mm!"

"Pinky swear, one hundred years, no breaking it."

Uncle Corin and Aunt Liora could only smile helplessly.

Looks like this daughter really wasn't coming back anymore.

"Alright, Lyra, don't disturb your brother now," Aunt Liora said gently.

"Mm!" Lyra nodded happily.

"Go wash up," Uncle Corin added. "Look at your face—you're like a little kitten."

"Ah!" Lyra yelped and hurried to the bathroom.

"This girl is always so reckless. Not ladylike at all," Aunt Liora sighed.

Uncle Corin and Kael exchanged strange looks.

Aunt Liora looked gentle and elegant now, but when she was young, she'd been just like Lyra.

Noticing their looks, Aunt Liora snapped, "Uncle Corin, what kind of look is that?!"

Since Kael was injured, she spared him.

Kael immediately shrank back and shot Uncle Corin a good luck look before turning away and pretending to study Corviknight's Poké Ball intently.

Uncle Corin sighed internally and hurried to placate his wife—otherwise, he'd be sleeping on the sofa tonight.

At the same time, at Chunfeng High School—

In Class 1, Grade 11, Professor Alderon closed her lesson plan and said, "Aria, Elayne, come with me. Everyone else, class dismissed."

She picked up her materials and left.

Aria and Elayne exchanged puzzled looks, then followed her.

Drake glanced curiously at his deskmate.

"Milo, did you get any message? Why did Iron Rod Yam call Elayne and Aria?"

"How would I know?" Milo replied irritably. "Probably something about studying."

"I'll just ask them later," Drake shrugged, then started chatting with Milo about last night's Magic Abyss incident.

After all, in Magic City, there was hardly anyone who didn't know about it.
