Chapter 20 - Chapter 20 - The Exam That Rewards Understanding

Jin landed softly.

Not because the ground was kind, but because he made it so.

Cold stone pressed under his boots, damp and uneven, surrounded by broken pillars and half-swallowed ruins. Fog drifted low across the terrain, carrying the faint smell of metal and old blood.

This place wasn't meant to feel alive.

It was meant to consume.

His exam watch vibrated once and unfolded a translucent display.

Jin scanned the list.

"…So higher risk, higher pay," he said quietly.

Inside his mind, his own voice replied lazily.

At least they're honest about it.

A faint holographic map hovered above the watch. Colored zones marked monster density, and at the very center—

A sealed area, marked only as Restricted Zone.

No explanation.

No description.

Jin glanced at it for half a second.

Then looked away.

"Center zones are always annoying," he muttered. "I'll pretend it doesn't exist."

First PointsThe fog shifted.

An E-rank beast burst forward—wolf-shaped, bone-spined, all instinct and hunger.

Jin didn't even sigh this time.

One step.

One slash.

The creature collapsed before it understood what happened.

E-RANK KILL +10 pts

CURRENT POINTS: 10

Jin blinked at the update.

"…Ten points," he said. "I've been tipped better."

He moved on.

Another E-rank.

Then two more.

A small D-rank goblin pack tried to ambush him from broken cover.

They failed.

Quietly.

Efficiently.

Jin wiped his blade clean and tilted his head.

"So far this feels less like an exam," he said aloud, "and more like pest control."

Inside his mind:

Careful. Exams get offended when you underestimate them.

Korea WatchesFar above Seoul, inside the Hunter Association Headquarters, Stage 3 feeds bloomed across the wall like a living map.

Points jumped.

Ranks shifted.

Candidates rose and fell in real time.

Busan's flame-user burned through C-ranks for steady gains.

Daegu's twin-blade prodigy hunted B-ranks cleanly, methodical and ruthless.

Incheon's spear-user avoided combat entirely, choosing optimal routes.

Strong strategies.

Strong minds.

Vice Dean Yoon Seolhwa of Eclipse Sovereign watched quietly, emerald eyes sharp.

"This year's batch is good," she said.

Chief Examiner Kang Ara of Drakeheart Citadel smirked. "Good is common."

The main screen subtly zoomed toward Seoul.

Toward Jin.

Director Seo Tae-hyun of Skyfall Institute narrowed his eyes.

"He's not chasing points," he said.

Master Instructor Baek Do-jin of Mirage Crown Academy smiled faintly.

"He's chasing efficiency."

Rankings UpdateJin's watch vibrated again.

LIVE RANKING UPDATE — SEOUL REGION

A list unfolded.

1) Kang Minjae — 3,200 pts

2) Aira — 3,050 pts

3) Choi Yuseong — 2,740 pts

Jin — 70 pts

Jin stared at his position.

Then at the top.

Then back at his points.

"…Wow," he said sincerely. "They're really committed."

Inside his mind:

Low-tier farming. Safe. Predictable. Effective.

He exhaled and looked at the map again.

The yellow zone.

B-Rank Density

Jin stepped into the B-rank zone.

The change was immediate.

The fog thinned, but the air grew heavier. The ground was no longer uneven rubble—it was scarred, cracked, and stained in places that told stories without words. The silence here wasn't empty.

It was cautious.

His exam watch vibrated lightly.

B-RANK DENSITY ZONE CONFIRMED

Jin glanced at the map once more, confirming his position, then nodded to himself.

"Alright," he said calmly. "Let's make this worth the risk."

Inside his mind, his own voice replied lazily.

About time. Ten-point monsters were starting to feel insulting.

The First HundredA shape burst from behind a broken wall—a B-rank lizard-type monster, thick scales layered like armor, claws scraping stone as it lunged.

Jin didn't retreat.

He stepped forward.

The exchange lasted three seconds.

One deflection.

One sidestep.

One clean strike through the throat.

The creature collapsed without ceremony.

B-RANK KILL +100 pts

CURRENT POINTS: 170

Jin glanced at the number and nodded approvingly.

"That's more like it."

He moved deeper.

Method Over SpeedJin didn't charge blindly.

He followed paths where monster density overlapped. He positioned himself so noise carried just far enough to draw attention—but not enough to overwhelm.

One monster at a time.

Two, at most.

A B-rank boar fell with its momentum used against it.

A stone-skinned hound shattered when Jin drove force into the seam beneath its jaw.

A winged predator dropped after Jin severed the muscles controlling its flight.

Each fight was clean.

Each kill deliberate.

His watch ticked upward steadily.

Jin exhaled slowly between encounters, never rushing, never slowing too much.

"This exam is surprisingly reasonable," he muttered.

"Violent, but reasonable."

Inside his mind:

You're saying that while standing in a pile of corpses.

Perspective.

Headquarters — Interest SharpensAt the Hunter Association Headquarters, the Seoul feed was no longer a side screen.

It was centered.

Points climbed steadily beside Jin's name—not explosive, but relentless.

Vice Dean Yoon Seolhwa of Eclipse Sovereign leaned forward slightly, emerald eyes focused.

"He's not chasing kills," she said. "He's controlling flow."

Chief Examiner Kang Ara smiled faintly.

"That's how veterans hunt," she replied. "Not students."

Director Seo Tae-hyun of Skyfall Institute watched Jin's movement pattern.

"He's minimizing damage taken," he said. "This is long-term efficiency."

Master Instructor Baek Do-jin of Mirage Crown Academy nodded once.

"And confidence," he murmured. "Only someone confident chooses the B-rank layer this early."

Rankings Begin to MoveJin's watch vibrated again.

LIVE RANKING UPDATE — SEOUL REGION

The list shifted.

1) Kang Minjae — 3,400 pts

2) Aira — 3,280 pts

3) Choi Yuseong — 2,950 pts

7) Jin — 1,270 pts

Jin raised an eyebrow.

"Oh," he said. "I exist now."

Inside his mind:

Still behind. But now the slope's steep.

He looked at the map again.

Still in the B-rank zone.

Still plenty of targets.

"Let's keep going," he said lightly. "I'm warming up."

The Grind That Isn't BoringThe next hour passed in focused rhythm.

B-rank monsters were stronger. Smarter. Less predictable.

But Jin adapted faster.

He lured a pair of armored beasts into narrow terrain and dismantled them one by one.

He let a fast predator overextend, then ended the fight with a single precise cut.

He used terrain, timing, and patience.

No flashy skills.

No reckless bursts of power.

Just understanding.

His points climbed.

By the time Jin paused to wipe his blade clean, his watch vibrated again.

Jin blinked.

"…Huh."

He glanced at the rankings.

The Board ShiftsSEOUL REGION — LIVE RANKINGS

1) Aira —- 3700

2) Kang Minjae — 3,600 pts

3) Jin — 3,020 pts

Jin stared at his position for a moment.

Then smiled faintly.

"Third place," he said. "That was quicker than expected."

Inside his mind:

Now they'll start looking at me.

As if responding to the thought—

something shifted.

The air changed.

The Ceiling Appears jin felt it before he saw it.

Pressure.

Not overwhelming.

But unmistakable.

From between jagged stone pillars, a tall figure emerged.

Sickle-like limbs.

Hardened carapace.

Eyes sharp with predatory intelligence.

His exam watch updated softly.

A-RANK MONSTER DETECTED

Jin's expression didn't change.

But his attention sharpened completely.

"…So that's the top," he murmured.

Inside his mind:

Highest tier in the exam. Two hundred points.

Reasonable.

The A-rank monster didn't rush.

It observed.

Measured.

Then struck.

The first clash rang like steel on steel, force traveling up Jin's arms.

He slid back half a step.

Not because he had to.

Because it told him something.

"Oh," Jin said quietly, eyes bright.

"You're serious."

He smiled.

Not cocky.

Interested.

"This exam keeps getting better."

Headquarters — SilenceAt the Hunter Association, the room had gone still.

The Seoul feed zoomed automatically.

Vice Dean Yoon Seolhwa rose from her seat.

"He reached three thousand in B-rank alone."

Kang Ara's smile thinned, eyes sharp.

"And now he's testing the ceiling."

Director Seo Tae-hyun watched without blinking.

"If he kills it," he said quietly,

"the exam changes."

Master Instructor Baek Do-jin folded his hands.

"And if he keeps killing them," he added softly,

"something else will respond."
