Arabelle found out that the curse her mother is under is from a black witch. Her mother encountered the witch back when she was younger. That witch fell in love with her father back then. However, he chose her mother instead of her. The woman couldn't accept her defeat and ended up cursing both of them. It happened way back before she and Amie were born. Although the curse took effect the moment Amie was born. Their father got into an accident and died while their mother seems to be constantly sick.
It seems like a normal occurrence during her mom's time. Many families seem to have knowledge about the occult and witchcraft. Even her grandma seems to know some spells and curses. Although she never used curses to get back at the people who wronged her. She believes in karma and that should be more than enough.
