Chapter 49: The Ghost of the First Blade
As the Primordial Hilt was ejected from the ship's airlock, it didn't drift away. It caught the light of the collapsing star and expanded, becoming a beacon of pure, violet energy that stabilized the gravity-well around the Sol-Invictus. The white marble Library opened like a blooming flower, and the ship was pulled inside a massive, silent hangar.
Inside, the air was still and smelled of ancient parchment and cold steel. There was no noise here—no gravity-shear, no Imperial alarms. Carson led the way off the ramp, his footsteps echoing in the hallowed halls of his ancestors. The walls were lined with millions of crystalline data-rods, each containing the life-work of a Sovereign.
At the end of the main hall stood a statue of a man holding a blade that didn't exist—a hilt of pure light. As Carson approached, the statue's eyes flickered with a faint, emerald glow.
"So," a voice echoed through the hall, sounding like a thousand years of wind. "The line of McCain has returned. But you bring the Void-Poison of the Hegemony within you. You are a tainted vessel, Carson McCain."
The statue didn't move, but a holographic projection of a man appeared—Carson's grandfather, the First Sovereign.
"Grandfather," Carson whispered, falling to one knee. "The people are dying. The Empire has turned the Flow into a cage. I need the 34th Strand. I need the power to break the Sun."
"The 34th Strand is not a power, boy," the Ghost replied, his eyes scanning Carson's corrupted meridians. "It is a sacrifice. To reach the next realm, you must burn away the 'Self.' You must let the Void-Poison consume what remains of your humanity so that only the Saber-Spirit remains. If you do this, you will save your city, but you will never be able to touch another human being without turning them to ash."
Carson looked back at the hangar, where Hobs and the "Broken Gear" soldiers were waiting, their faces filled with hope. He looked at his hands, then back at the Ghost.
"I've lived in the dark my whole life," Carson said, his voice hardening into steel. "If I have to be the fire that burns the Empire, then I don't need a shadow. Give me the Sovereign's Flame."
