Chapter 16 - The Gates of Stone River

The first rays of dawn crept across the eastern horizon, washing the vast plains outside Stone River City in a soft golden glow. Overnight dew still clung to the grass, sparkling like scattered jewels beneath the morning light. The countless campfires that had burned throughout the night had dwindled into thin streams of smoke, while travelers emerged from their tents one after another, stretching stiff limbs and preparing for another day on the road.

Unlike the peaceful atmosphere of the previous evening, the plain was already alive with activity. Merchants secured cargo onto wagons, mercenaries inspected their weapons, and Spirit Beasts harnessed to heavy carriages snorted impatiently as their handlers tightened leather straps. Every traveler shared the same destination.

Stone River City.

The towering fortress dominated the landscape, its colossal walls rising from the earth like an extension of the surrounding mountains. In the pale light of dawn, the gray stone carried a solemn grandeur that made the city appear eternal. Massive banners embroidered with the emblem of a silver river flowing beneath a black mountain fluttered atop the battlements, catching the morning breeze.

Zion stood quietly beside the carriage, his eyes fixed on those walls.

Yesterday they had seemed distant.

Now...

They filled nearly half the horizon.

No matter how much he looked, his mind struggled to accept that people had built something so enormous.

Behind him, Kellan yawned loudly as he wandered over with a wooden cup of steaming tea.

"I don't think I'll ever get used to seeing that."

He tilted his head back, trying to find the top of the nearest watchtower.

"Blue Star Village's entire watchtower could fit inside one of those gates."

Mira smiled as she finished rolling up her blanket.

"That's because you're comparing a village to one of the largest cities in this region."

Captain Roran emerged from beside the horses after checking their harnesses one final time.

"The city has stood for more than eight hundred years."

He rested a hand against one of the carriage wheels before looking toward the distant walls.

"Each generation repaired it, expanded it, and strengthened it."

His gaze lingered on the fortress for a moment.

"It wasn't built in a single lifetime."

"It was built by many."

Zion quietly absorbed those words.

A forge was passed from master to apprentice.

A village survived because each generation left something behind for the next.

Perhaps...

Cities grew the same way.

One stone at a time.

One generation after another.

---

As the sun climbed higher, a deep horn echoed from the direction of the city.

The sound rolled across the plains like distant thunder.

Every conversation seemed to pause for a heartbeat.

Then the waiting camps burst into motion.

"The gates are opening!"

"Move the wagons!"

"Hurry before the inspection lines get longer!"

Within moments, hundreds of travelers began making their way toward the enormous entrance.

The previously quiet plain transformed into a slow-moving river of people.

Captain Roran climbed onto the driver's seat.

"We're leaving."

The horned horses pulled the carriage into the growing procession.

From above, the line must have resembled a great serpent winding across the grasslands. Merchant caravans, lone cultivators, nobles, mercenaries, hunters, craftsmen, scholars, and ordinary villagers all merged into a single queue.

For the first time since leaving Blue Star Village...

Zion realized just how many people lived in this world.

The closer they drew to the city, the more details became visible.

The outer wall was even more imposing than it had appeared from afar. Its weathered stones were each taller than a grown man, fitted together with such precision that scarcely a crack could be seen between them. Moss and climbing vines softened parts of the ancient structure, but nothing could diminish its overwhelming presence.

The gate itself was colossal.

Two immense doors reinforced with black iron stood fully open, each easily large enough for six merchant wagons to pass side by side.

Above the entrance hung a polished stone tablet engraved with elegant characters.

Stone River City.

The inscription radiated a faint pressure that Zion could somehow feel despite standing hundreds of meters away.

He frowned slightly.

"Captain..."

"Why does that writing feel..."

"...heavy?"

Captain Roran followed his gaze and smiled.

"You noticed."

"It isn't ordinary ink."

"The characters were carved by a Heaven Realm cultivator more than two centuries ago."

Kellan blinked.

"They're still affecting people after two hundred years?"

Captain Roran nodded.

"True experts leave traces of themselves upon the world."

"The stronger the cultivator..."

"...the longer those traces endure."

Zion couldn't help staring at the inscription again.

Someone had written those words centuries ago...

Yet their will still lingered.

For the first time, the Heaven Realm no longer sounded like a distant title.

It felt...

Real.

---

The line slowed as it approached the gates.

Now Zion could clearly see dozens of armored guards stationed along the entrance.

Every one of them stood perfectly still, clad in dark steel armor engraved with the city's emblem. Long spears rested upright in their hands, while sharp eyes carefully observed every traveler entering Stone River City.

There was no shouting.

No disorder.

Everyone waited their turn.

Even powerful cultivators remained surprisingly patient.

Kellan leaned closer to Captain Roran.

"I thought cultivators hated following rules."

Captain Roran chuckled softly.

"They do."

"So why is everyone behaving?"

"Because these rules are backed by strength."

He gestured subtly toward the walls.

"Look carefully."

Zion raised his eyes.

Only then did he notice them.

Figures.

Silent silhouettes stood atop the massive battlements every few dozen meters. Most wore long robes instead of armor, and unlike the ordinary guards below, they carried no visible weapons.

Yet...

Even from this distance...

Zion felt a faint pressure emanating from them.

It was nothing like Captain Roran's controlled aura.

It was deeper.

Sharper.

Like countless unsheathed blades quietly watching the world below.

Captain Roran lowered his voice.

"Those aren't ordinary guards."

"They're cultivators assigned to protect Stone River City."

"If anyone causes trouble here..."

"They won't leave alive."

Kellan immediately sat up straighter.

"...I suddenly respect rules a lot more."

Captain Roran laughed.

"A wise decision."

---

The line moved steadily forward.

From a distance, the entrance had appeared chaotic, but as the carriage drew closer, Zion realized everything was governed by an invisible order. Travelers were divided into separate queues. Merchant caravans carrying large amounts of cargo occupied the widest lane. Individuals and small groups entered through narrower passages, while another lane was reserved exclusively for city officials and military patrols.

Not a single person attempted to cut in line.

Not because they were polite.

Because no one dared.

Two guards dragged a middle-aged man away from the entrance as Zion watched.

"I've already paid the entrance tax!" the man shouted. "This is unfair!"

The captain of the gate guards remained unmoved.

"You attempted to bribe a city official."

"I... I only offered a gift!"

"The punishment remains the same."

Without another word, the guards escorted the struggling man toward a stone building built against the city wall.

His cries gradually faded into the distance.

Kellan quietly swallowed.

"...I don't think he's coming back anytime soon."

Captain Roran shook his head.

"Stone River City has little patience for corruption."

"The laws here exist to protect millions of people."

"If they become negotiable..."

"...the city won't survive."

Mira glanced toward the disappearing man before lowering her voice.

"So even cultivators obey the law?"

Captain Roran smiled faintly.

"They obey..."

"...until they're strong enough to ignore it."

The answer carried an uncomfortable truth.

Zion silently stored those words away.

Strength granted freedom.

But it also determined whose rules mattered.

---

As they continued forward, the scale of the city became even more overwhelming.

The gates were so large that several fully loaded caravans passed through at the same time without slowing one another down. Above them, enormous chains thicker than tree trunks disappeared into the walls, connected to mechanisms capable of opening or sealing the gates.

Zion couldn't help looking upward.

The walls stretched so high that the guards walking along the battlements looked no larger than insects.

"What are you looking at?"

Captain Roran asked.

"The walls."

"They're impossible to climb."

Captain Roran nodded approvingly.

"That's the idea."

He pointed toward the smooth stone.

"Notice the surface."

Zion narrowed his eyes.

The lower portion of the wall had almost no handholds. Every stone had been polished until it was nearly smooth.

"No footholds."

Captain Roran smiled.

"And beneath the stone..."

"...are defensive formations."

Kellan frowned.

"Formations?"

"They are arrays created by Formation Masters."

"They can strengthen walls, conceal cities, trap enemies, or unleash attacks powerful enough to kill cultivators."

Mira's eyes brightened immediately.

"So Formation Masters are another profession?"

"One of the most respected."

Captain Roran nodded.

"An outstanding Formation Master can protect an entire city."

"And an outstanding Alchemist can keep an entire army alive."

He paused before adding,

"A great Blacksmith can forge weapons that change the outcome of wars."

Zion instinctively lowered his eyes.

Blacksmith.

The familiar word stirred something inside him.

He had spent most of his life shaping ordinary iron.

Now...

He was discovering that smiths in this world forged far more than farming tools.

Captain Roran noticed the thoughtful look on Zion's face but chose not to interrupt him.

---

The carriage finally reached the inspection area.

Unlike the simple wooden checkpoints outside Blue Star Village, this one resembled a fortress in its own right.

Rows of guards stood behind long stone tables while clerks dressed in blue robes recorded names onto bamboo slips. Beside them, several cultivators wearing silver badges quietly observed every traveler passing through.

Nothing escaped their attention.

One merchant's wagon was searched from front to back.

Another traveler was asked to open every bag he carried.

A young cultivator attempted to conceal a dagger inside his boot.

The moment he reached the inspection table, one of the silver-badged officials calmly looked at him.

"The dagger."

The young man froze.

"...How did you..."

"Remove it."

Without arguing, the cultivator slowly pulled the hidden weapon from his boot.

The official merely nodded.

"Declare concealed weapons next time."

"You may proceed."

Kellan leaned toward Captain Roran.

"They knew without looking."

Captain Roran answered quietly.

"Perception."

"Cultivators with sufficiently refined Origin Essence can sense far more than ordinary eyes."

Zion frowned.

"So eventually..."

"...people won't be able to hide anything?"

Captain Roran chuckled.

"You'd be surprised."

"The stronger people become..."

"...the better they become at hiding."

---

Soon...

It was their turn.

The carriage rolled to a stop before one of the inspection tables.

A broad-shouldered guard stepped forward.

His armor was noticeably finer than that of the others, and a bronze badge rested upon his chest.

"Purpose of entry?"

Captain Roran produced a small jade token from inside his robe.

"Escort mission."

"Three successful candidates for Star Realm Academy."

The guard accepted the token and examined it carefully.

His expression changed almost immediately.

He straightened and returned it with both hands.

"My apologies, Captain Roran."

"Your identity has been verified."

He turned toward Zion, Mira and Kellan.

"Names."

One by one, they answered.

The clerk beside him quickly recorded everything onto a bamboo register.

"Origin?"

"Blue Star Village."

The clerk's brush paused for the briefest moment before continuing.

Apparently...

Blue Star Village meant very little in a place like this.

After recording the final name, the guard looked toward the carriage.

"Any forbidden items?"

Captain Roran answered calmly.

"None."

"We're carrying ordinary supplies, beast materials, and one registered Peak Origin Rank Spirit Beast Origin Core."

The guard nodded without surprise.

"Inspection."

Immediately, two guards climbed into the carriage.

They searched with remarkable efficiency, opening crates, examining sacks of supplies, and checking beneath the seats.

Within moments, they climbed back down.

"Clear."

The broad-shouldered guard stamped the travel document with a heavy bronze seal.

"You may enter."

Kellan let out a quiet sigh of relief.

"That's easier than I expected."

Captain Roran smiled.

"That's because we had nothing to hide."

---

Just as he picked up the reins...

A sudden commotion erupted several lines away.

"Stop him!"

A sharp cry echoed across the checkpoint.

Every conversation instantly ceased.

A lean figure burst from the crowd at astonishing speed, shoving merchants aside as he sprinted toward the open gate.

His clothes were stained with blood.

Something wrapped in black cloth was clutched tightly beneath one arm.

"After him!"

More than a dozen guards moved simultaneously.

Before the fleeing man had taken ten more steps...

One of the silver-badged cultivators standing near the checkpoint finally moved.

No...

He simply pointed a finger.

A streak of pale blue Origin Essence shot through the air.

Crack!

The ground beneath the fugitive's feet exploded.

The man lost his balance and crashed violently onto the stone road.

Before he could stand again, four guards were already upon him, pinning him to the ground.

The black cloth slipped from his grasp.

A small wooden box tumbled across the road before finally stopping.

Every guard who saw it changed expression.

Even the silver-badged cultivator frowned.

The box...

Was cracked.

And from the narrow gap...

A faint thread of crimson mist slowly escaped.

Captain Roran's relaxed expression disappeared.

"...Interesting."

Zion looked toward him.

"What is it?"

Captain Roran didn't answer immediately.

His eyes remained fixed on the sealed box.

After several moments, he spoke in a voice barely above a whisper.

"...Whatever is sealed inside... should never have reached Stone River City."

The surrounding guards quickly surrounded the box instead of touching it.

Even the cultivator who had stopped the fugitive chose not to approach immediately.

For the first time since arriving...

Zion saw uncertainty on the faces of Stone River City's defenders.

And somehow...

That unsettled him far more than the battle with the Crimson Fang Wolf.

---

Silence settled over the checkpoint.

Not the ordinary silence of people waiting their turn.

This was different.

It spread through the crowd like an invisible wave.

The guards who had rushed to restrain the fugitive no longer looked at the man struggling beneath them.

Every pair of eyes had shifted toward the small wooden box lying upon the stone road.

A faint ribbon of crimson mist continued to seep through the narrow crack running across its surface.

It drifted lazily into the air before dissolving.

No one stepped closer.

Even the surrounding merchants instinctively guided their wagons farther away, while several Spirit Beasts grew increasingly restless, pawing at the ground and releasing uneasy cries.

Zion frowned.

The mist looked harmless.

Yet the reaction of everyone around him suggested otherwise.

Captain Roran's gaze never left the box.

"Stay inside the carriage."

His voice remained calm.

But Zion had learned enough during the journey to recognize the warning hidden beneath those words.

Something was wrong.

Very wrong.

The silver-badged cultivator slowly approached.

Unlike the ordinary guards, he didn't rush.

Each step was measured.

Careful.

When he stopped three meters from the box, he raised one hand.

Soft blue Origin Essence gathered around his fingers.

Instead of touching the box directly, he extended the Origin Essence toward it like invisible threads.

The instant the energy came into contact with the wooden surface...

Crack!

The entire box trembled violently.

The crimson mist surged outward.

A sharp, mournful scream echoed from inside.

It lasted only a heartbeat.

Yet every person present heard it clearly.

The silver-badged cultivator's pupils contracted.

He immediately withdrew his Origin Essence.

"No one touch it!"

His voice thundered across the checkpoint.

The command carried Origin Essence.

Even the distant travelers heard it.

Within moments, dozens more guards surrounded the area, forcing everyone back.

"What happened?"

"What's inside?"

"Is it some kind of treasure?"

Whispers spread rapidly through the waiting crowd.

Captain Roran quietly shook his head.

"No."

"If it were treasure..."

"...they wouldn't look frightened."

Zion noticed something else.

The man who had tried to flee...

Had stopped struggling.

Instead...

He began laughing.

A low, broken laugh escaped from his lips despite the guards pinning him to the ground.

"You found it..."

"...too late..."

One of the guards struck him across the face.

"Silence!"

Blood trickled from the corner of the man's mouth.

Yet he continued smiling.

"You don't understand..."

"...it has already awakened..."

The checkpoint fell deathly still.

Even the guards restraining him exchanged uneasy glances.

The silver-badged cultivator's expression darkened.

"Seal his mouth."

Immediately, one of the guards stuffed cloth between the prisoner's teeth.

Captain Roran narrowed his eyes.

"...Awakened?"

Before Zion could ask what that meant...

A powerful pressure descended from above.

Boom!

The air itself seemed to grow heavier.

Everyone instinctively looked toward the city walls.

A figure wearing deep blue robes had appeared atop the battlements.

No one had seen him arrive.

One moment...

The wall had been empty.

The next...

He was standing there.

His long sleeves fluttered gently in the morning breeze as he looked down at the checkpoint below.

The moment Captain Roran saw him, his expression became solemn.

"An Earth Realm expert..."

Captain Roran's eyes narrowed.

"No..."

He drew in a slow breath.

"Far stronger than an ordinary Earth Realm cultivator."

The blue-robed elder took a single step forward.

He didn't jump.

He simply stepped into empty air.

The surrounding crowd gasped.

Instead of falling...

The elder descended slowly, as though invisible stairs supported every footstep.

Within seconds, he landed beside the damaged wooden box.

The guards immediately bowed.

"Greetings, Commander"

The Commander acknowledged them with a slight nod before directing his attention toward the cracked container.

His calm eyes narrowed.

"...Who transported this?"

The captured man only laughed through the cloth stuffed into his mouth.

The Commander sighed softly.

"What a troublesome morning."

Without another word, he produced a small jade seal from his sleeve.

The seal floated into the air above the box.

Golden symbols emerged one after another, forming a glowing cage around the escaping crimson mist.

The strange scream that had echoed moments ago vanished instantly.

The pressure surrounding the box disappeared.

Only then did everyone release the breath they had been holding.

The Commander turned toward the silver-badged cultivator.

"Continue with the Investigation"

"Yes, Commander!"

TheCommander raised his hand.

A silver ring on his finger flashed with faint light.

Space itself seemed to ripple.

The cracked wooden box vanished without a trace.

Zion's eyes widened.

"...It disappeared."

Kellan rubbed his own eyes as if doubting what he had seen.

"Where did it go?"

Even Mira looked stunned.

Captain Roran smiled faintly.

"A Spatial Storage Artifact."

"A treasure capable of storing objects in a separate space."

"One day, when you become stronger, you'll probably own one yourselves."

As if nothing had happened.

The checkpoint slowly came back to life.

Merchants resumed moving.

Guards reopened the inspection lanes.

People whispered among themselves, but no one dared ask questions aloud.

Captain Roran finally picked up the reins.

"We're leaving."

The carriage rolled through the enormous gates.

As Zion crossed beneath the towering archway of Stone River City, he couldn't stop thinking about the prisoner's final words.

"It has already awakened..."

He didn't know what had been inside that box.

But somehow...

He felt that this mysterious incident...

Was only the beginning.

_ _ _

The enormous gates stood open before them.

As the carriage rolled beneath the ancient archway, Zion instinctively looked up.

The stone above him was covered with countless battle scars left behind over centuries.

Beyond the gate...

A completely different world unfolded.

Endless streets stretched into the distance.

Spirit lamps still glowed despite the daylight.

Vendors shouted from both sides of the avenue.

Cultivators hurried through the crowds.

Strange beasts pulled luxurious carriages.

Towers pierced the clouds.

Zion slowly tightened his grip on New Dawn.

Blue Star Village was behind him.

Stone River City...

was only the beginning.
