Chapter 3: The Voice of the Void
Zion woke before dawn, as he always did.
The smithy was unnaturally quiet.
There was no familiar shuffle of Granny Iya's feet. No gruff complaints about the fire refusing to catch. No sudden smack on the back of his head for standing incorrectly.
Only silence.
He remained seated on the narrow bed behind the workshop, staring at the wooden rafters overhead.
For a long moment, he listened.
Nothing.
The ring of keys lay beside him where he had placed them the night before. They didn't shine or pulse with hidden power. They were simply iron keys.
Ordinary.
Yet they felt heavier than any hammer he had ever lifted.
Zion let out a slow breath before climbing to his feet.
He washed his face in the small basin before beginning the morning routine that had become second nature over the years.
Sweep the ashes.
Arrange the tools.
Open the shutters.
Prepare the forge.
His hands moved automatically, but his heart refused to follow.
Outside, Blue Star looked exactly as it always had.
Morning mist drifted through the quiet streets while thin trails of smoke rose from nearby chimneys. Birds chirped lazily beneath the pale dawn sky, completely unaware that today was unlike every day before it.
Today...
Zion had turned sixteen.
On Blue Star, everyone knew what that meant.
Awakening Day.
Some spent their childhood dreaming of this moment, hoping to awaken extraordinary talents that would change their destiny.
Others feared it, terrified they would awaken with nothing remarkable and spend the rest of their lives as ordinary people.
As for Zion...
He simply didn't know what awaited him.
Almost unconsciously, his fingers brushed against the small bundle hidden beneath his shirt.
The Veil.
Even through several layers of cloth, the black metal remained unnaturally cold.
It was still there.
Exactly where Granny Iya had told him to keep it.
He closed his eyes briefly.
"Just one more ordinary morning..."
The thought lingered for only a heartbeat before he opened his eyes again.
Whatever happened today...
The forge still needed lighting.
He knelt before the furnace, arranged fresh charcoal, and worked the bellows.
Moments later, orange flames flickered to life.
Warmth slowly filled the workshop.
The familiar rhythm of crackling fire steadied his breathing.
For a brief moment...
Everything felt normal.
Then a voice echoed inside his mind.
"Zion."
His hand froze on the bellows.
The forge continued to crackle as though nothing had happened. Flames danced across the charcoal, filling the workshop with familiar warmth. Yet his heartbeat thundered in his ears.
The voice hadn't come from outside.
It had spoken directly into his mind.
It wasn't Granny Iya's voice.
It wasn't anyone's.
It was vast. Ancient. Calm in the way an endless ocean was calm, and indifferent in the way the night sky ignored the lives beneath it.
You have reached the required age.
A chill ran down Zion's spine.
"What...?"
The word barely escaped his lips.
Before he could gather another thought, his vision rippled.
A black panel unfolded above the anvil without making the slightest sound. It wasn't made of wood, stone, metal, or glass.
It simply existed.
A sheet of absolute darkness suspended in midair, swallowing every trace of light around it.
Golden letters slowly appeared across its surface.

Zion stared at the panel without blinking.
Everyone in Blue Star knew about the Awakening Panel.
Children spoke about it with excitement.
Adults remembered it with pride... or regret.
Yet no one had ever described what it truly felt like.
It wasn't merely a notification.
It felt as though an incomprehensibly ancient existence had finally turned its attention toward him after ignoring him his entire life.
His grip tightened around the bellows until his knuckles turned white.
"Independent Trial..." he murmured.
"So... I'm alone?"
The answer came immediately.
Transportation will begin.
Panic surged through him.
"W-Wait!"
He stumbled backward, nearly knocking over a stool.
"I'm not ready!"
The Veil hidden beneath his shirt suddenly turned ice cold.
It wasn't ordinary cold.
It pierced through flesh and settled deep within his bones.
For the first time since Granny Iya had entrusted it to him...
The Veil moved.
Not physically.
It felt as though something wrapped tightly around his existence was slowly beginning to loosen.
The workshop darkened.
The fire dimmed.
Even the air became strangely heavy.
A low hum echoed through the forge, so faint it was almost impossible to hear.
The world itself seemed to stretch.
Instinctively, Zion reached for the anvil.
His hand passed straight through solid steel.
His pupils shrank.
"What...?"
The walls of the smithy blurred.
The workshop twisted like paint being dragged across a canvas.
Outside, the streets of Blue Star dissolved into streaks of fading light before disappearing completely.
Everything vanished.
The warmth.
The scent of charcoal.
The morning sky.
The forge that had been his home.
Darkness swallowed it all.
...
When Zion opened his eyes again, he stood within an endless black void.
There was no sky.
No earth.
No stars.
No direction.
His feet felt solid ground beneath them, yet nothing existed where the ground should have been.
The air was perfectly still.
Even silence felt heavy.
Floating before him, the Awakening Panel remained unchanged.
"So..."
He slowly tightened his fists.
"This is the trial."
His voice echoed once before the darkness swallowed the sound.
An uneasy feeling settled over him.
The void wasn't empty.
Something was there.
Watching.
Waiting.
Without thinking, Zion pressed a hand against his chest.
The Veil remained hidden beneath his shirt.
Cold.
Silent.
Present.
Yet despite carrying it, he had never felt so exposed.
Then the voice returned.
Trial begins.
The words did not appear on the panel.
They echoed throughout the endless darkness itself.
A thin line of pale white light suddenly split the void.
It widened slowly, like a wound opening in reality.
Something was coming.
