By the time night fully settled over the village, the decision had already been made.
No arguments lingered. No jokes softened it. It wasn't excitement that sealed it, but practicality, clear, unavoidable, almost dull in its certainty. Mina would be the one to advance.
She was already the strongest among them in terms of raw battlefield presence. Three-peak soldier–rank undead, control refined through real combat, instincts sharpened by pain and near-death. Even without a captain's body, she had held lines others couldn't. Giving her the rank wasn't favoritism.
It was common sense.
They agreed quietly, the decision settling without argument as the lamps burned low and cast long, tired shadows across the room. Outside, the village had finally gone still. Doors were closed, fires banked, and even the distant murmur of voices had faded. Only the soft night wind slipped through repaired walls and narrow gaps, carrying with it the calm that came after too many hard days.
"We'll do it before dawn," Arin said. "Near Mina's hut."
Victor nodded. "Good call, with fewer people awake, there's less chance of… complications."
No one said what kind.
Upgrades had a way of drawing attention. Mana didn't like to be subtle.
Mina sat with her knees pulled close, fingers interlaced, eyes bright but unfocused. She wasn't afraid, not really, but something restless stirred beneath her skin.
"I'm excited," she said suddenly. "I really am."
Raul glanced at her. "About the power?"
She shook her head. "About father's expression."
That earned a small smile from Victor.
"I want to see his face when he realizes I'm Captain Rank," Mina continued. "Like him."
Raul snorted. "I'm looking forward to that too. He'll pretend to be calm for exactly three seconds."
Victor stood, stretching his shoulders. "Enough imagining expressions. We need rest. Before dawn means before dawn."
"I don't think I'll be able to sleep," Mina admitted.
Arin exhaled through his nose. "Yeah, same."
Raul shrugged. "I'll close my eyes anyway. That counts."
They tried to sleep for some time, getting as much rest as they could.
The hours that followed passed strangely. Time felt thicker, heavier, as if the night itself sensed that something was about to change. Mina lay on the fourth bed in their hut, staring up at the ceiling, breathing slowly and steadily. Her thoughts drifted through past battles, moments she'd nearly failed, mistakes she still remembered, the memory of her shield arm once giving out under too much force.
She flexed her fingers.
Soon, she would step into something new.
Victor was awake before dawn, already moving as he nudged the others up.
They gathered without words. The village slept, unaware. Lamps were shuttered. Fires reduced to embers. The sky was deep indigo, stars fading slowly as the horizon threatened morning.
Mina's hut stood at the edge of the village, modest and quiet. Inside, it smelled faintly of dried herbs and metal oil. She lit a single lamp and set it aside.
She stood there by herself, thoughts steady, the world narrowed to the moment.
In the center of the room, feet bare against the wooden floor, shoulders squared.
Raul leaned against the wall. Victor stood with his arms crossed. Arin faced her directly.
She took a breath.
Then another.
"Ready?" Arin asked.
Raul and Victor straightened instinctively, as if bracing for impact.
"I'm born ready," Mina said.
Raul gave her a thumbs-up. Victor followed, more solemn.
Arin nodded once.
The panel unfolded in front of him, familiar and heavy.

Arin stared at it longer than necessary.
He looked at Mina again.
She met his gaze without hesitation. Her eyes were steady, bright, unwavering.
"Upgrade Rank to Captain," Arin said.
The confirmation came instantly.
Command confirmed. 1000 Lord Coins consumed.
The air shifted.
Not violently. Not explosively.
It was subtle, like pressure changing before a storm. Light bent inward, invisible but present, as if the space around Mina had decided she was its center now.
Mana gathered.
It didn't slam into her.
It flowed.
Warmth spread from her chest outward, slow and deliberate. It reached her limbs, her spine, her head. It felt… right. Like something long waiting had finally arrived.
Mina exhaled without realizing she'd been holding her breath.
No pain followed.
No screaming, no collapse.
Just a deep, encompassing warmth that sank into her bones, into places she hadn't known were empty.
Her heartbeat steadied.
Her breathing slowed.
Arin watched carefully, senses stretched thin. He saw the change not as light, but as alignment, her posture subtly adjusting, muscles settling, balance refining itself without effort.
Five minutes passed.
They felt longer.
Then the mana faded, not abruptly, but like a tide receding after reaching its mark.
Mina opened her eyes.
Something was different.
Not obvious and flashy. But undeniable.
She straightened, rolling her shoulders once. Power moved with her, not resisting, not surging out of control. It obeyed.
"Wow," she said softly. Then louder, smiling, "That felt… awesome."
Victor blinked. "That's it?"
"It looks like it," Arin replied.
Mina pulled up her own status panel, eyes scanning. Then she laughed, short, breathless, disbelieving.
"I'm Captain Rank," she said. "I really am."
Raul grinned. "Congrats."
"Well," Arin said, releasing a breath he hadn't realized he was holding, "good thing nothing exploded."
Victor frowned. "Honestly, I was expecting more spectacle."
Arin shot him a look. "You wanted her hut to collapse?"
"I wanted glowing runes," Victor defended himself. "Maybe some thunder."
Mina chuckled. "It was kind of ordinary."
"That's a good thing," Arin said.
She tilted her head. "Yeah… but I was also looking forward to the flashy stuff."
Arin sighed. "Let's sit down first. Then we'll see what actually changed."
The lamp flickered softly as dawn crept closer outside.
Mina sat, still smiling faintly, hands resting on her knees. She felt solid yet grounded. Like the world fit her better now.
She reached Captain rank, not because she'd asked for it, but because she was strong enough to deserve it.
And the day hadn't even begun yet.
