"RUN! We can't win this. Fighting it will only exhaust us!" Arin's voice cut through the silence like a blade.
Raul didn't argue. "This time, I agree. Let's fucking run."
Victor was already moving, shield strapped tight, hammer clutched in his fist. "FULL SPEED AHEAD!"
They bolted through the shattered doorway, boots pounding against cracked stone. The ruins blurred around them, broken walls, hollow windows, statues frozen in grim silence. Except they weren't silent anymore.
The first statue, the swordsman, followed, its purple eyes burning like ghostfire. Its stone feet slammed against the ground with a sound like grinding bones. And then, as they ran, the others moved.
One by one, statues turned their heads. Cracks crawled across their bodies like veins. Purple light flared in hollow eyes. And then they ran.
Knights with swords. Archers with stone bows. Mages with staffs frozen mid-chant. All moving. All chasing.
Victor's breath hitched. "Oh, hell no—"
"Don't look back!" Raul snarled, his voice sharp, ragged. "Just run!"
They ran like demons, lungs burning, hearts pounding. The sound of pursuit was deafening, stone feet slamming, grinding, cracking. Shadows twisted across shattered streets, crawling like ink. The statues moved wrong, jerky, unnatural, but fast. Too fast even.
"Five, six, seven of them," Arin hissed, glancing back, his stomach knotting, "They're closing in!"
Victor roared, hammer swinging as one statue lunged too close. The impact was thunder, stone shattering in a spray of shards. But even as the fragments scattered, they twitched, crawled, pulled together.
"FUCK!" Victor cursed, voice cracking. "They all just don't die!"
"Then stop hitting them!" Raul barked. "Run!"
They ran.
The ruins stretched endlessly, streets twisting like veins, shadows pooling like blood. And then, through the gloom, they saw it.
The temple.
It loomed in the distance, vast and jagged, its spires clawing at the sky. Its gates yawned like the mouth of a beast, black and hollow. The only building untouched by time. Intact. Waiting.
Arin's breath tore from his lungs. "Should we try going there?"
Raul snarled, his voice sharp, ragged. "What difference would it make?"
"It's the only building that's whole!" Arin shot back. "Maybe we can hide!"
Raul exhaled slowly. "Sure. Let's give it a try."
Victor didn't wait. "MOVE!"
They ran harder, faster, lungs screaming, legs burning. The statues chased like predators, their purple eyes blazing, their stone bodies cracking with every step. The sound was wrong, grinding, scraping, pounding, like death crawling on stone feet.
The temple loomed closer. Its gates towered above them, carved with symbols that burned faintly in the dark. The air changed, thicker, heavier, tasting of ash and old magic.
They crossed the threshold.
And froze.
Because the statues stopped.
The knights halted mid-stride, their stone feet grinding against shattered streets. Purple eyes burned, cracks glowing faintly like veins of molten rock. But they didn't move forward. They couldn't.
An invisible wall shimmered across the temple's entrance, a barrier, faint and translucent, humming like a heartbeat. The statues slammed against it, stone fists pounding, blades scraping, but the barrier held.
Victor collapsed against a pillar, chest heaving, sweat dripping. "Holy… hell."
Raul leaned against the wall, daggers trembling in his grip. His grin was sharp, wild. "Well… that's new."
Arin exhaled slowly, lowering his sword. His voice was low, steady. "We're safe. For now."
Victor laughed, a sound sharp, hollow, half-mad. "Safe? With those things out there? Sure. Totally safe."
Raul smirked, eyes gleaming. "Better than dead."
Arin scanned the barrier, his gaze narrowing. "It's magic. Seems old, strong, too."
Victor groaned, sliding down the pillar. "Magic, statues, temples… what's next? Dragons?"
Raul chuckled softly, spinning a dagger between his fingers. "Don't jinx it."
They stepped inside.
The air was different inside the hall, thicker, heavier, pressing against the lungs, tasting of dust and old stone. Each breath carried a faint bitterness, like ash long settled and never disturbed. Beneath their feet, the floor gleamed dully, polished marble fractured by age, the cracks spidering outward as if the stone itself had tried to flee.
Pillars rose along the walls like ribs of some colossal corpse, their surfaces carved with runes worn smooth by time. Those markings pulsed faintly, veins of molten silver threading through the stone, casting a weak, sickly light that never quite reached the corners. Shadows stretched and warped along the walls and floor, bending unnaturally as the light flickered, lingering where they shouldn't, as if reluctant to let go.
The air hummed, low, constant, oppressive, thick with old magic. It clung to the skin, tasted of iron and forgotten blood. Every step echoed too loudly, swallowed too slowly, the silence between sounds heavy enough to suffocate.
At the centre of the chamber loomed the altar. Vast. Jagged. Its obsidian shards jutted upward like broken teeth, their edges catching the dim glow and reflecting it back in dull, fractured glimmers. The stone around its base was scarred, cracked, stained by rituals long finished or interrupted.
Behind it stood the statue.
It was unlike the others scattered through the ruins. Taller. Sharper. Draped in flowing stone robes that seemed to ripple despite their stillness. A hood concealed its face completely, offering no eyes to meet, no expression to read. Its hands rested on the pommel of a massive blade driven deep into the floor, the impact having split the marble beneath. Cracks radiated outward from the point of contact like scars, or veins, spreading through the chamber itself.
The statue stood silent.
And yet, the room felt as though it was waiting.
Victor swallowed hard. "Okay… creepy level just hit the roof."
Raul's voice was low, edged. "This doesn't look like a regular temple."
Arin's gaze lingered on the hooded statue, his stomach tightening. "It definitely isn't."
Silence stretched, thin, fragile, heavy.
Then something moved.
Not stone or shadow but sound.
Soft. Low. Feminine.
It crawled through the air like silk, wrapping around their throats, sinking into their bones.
"Welcome…"
The word echoed, sharp and sweet, dripping with something that wasn't human.
"…to the Temple of Trials, young lost souls."
The voice was everywhere, above, below, inside their heads. Soft, melodic, almost gentle. But underneath lay something sharp and cold, scraping against the mind like steel.
Victor froze, hammer trembling in his grip. "What… the hell was that?"
