Chapter 1 - Hour of the Wolves

The conflict within Western-Eastern European borders intensified when the President Dmytro Melnyk of Ukraine agrees to surrender 3/4 of its territory to Russia. During the concessions in Odessa, during a conference in the municipal hall. President Alexei Lebedev of Russia exchanging heated arguments with President Dmytro, both unyielding to their own demands, but the peace agreement reached a stalemate. Both sides signed the peace agreement with the help of high-profile UN mediators.

Ukraine agreed to cede 3/4 of its territory and for Russia to pay war reparations to rehabilitate Ukraine, using frozen assets from Western European banks included the offer of mass labor to repair infrastructures, in promise that Ukraine will never affiliate again within buffer zone of geopolitical interests between Western and Eastern Europe. Lieutenant Nikolai saluted as the president of Ukraine exited the conference room and escorted him back to the armored vehicle, but a swarm of drones appeared and surrounded the municipal hall.

The Russian president was flabbergasted by the lieutenant's report that NATO forces were making their own move and decided to strike the peace deals and eliminate the high-profile UN mediators so no one would witness it. Nikolai screamed back and pushed the president into the armored vehicle, but it was too late when the swarm of drones struck the UN, Russian, and Ukrainian convoys, killing both leaders and the mediators. His comrades were reduced to piles of flesh, and while others bitterly fought to the end, they did not abandon the post to defend the place.

Nikolai aimlessly fired at drones out of fear and he successfully downed two at low altitude. Vehicle mounted laser system failed to work when the enemy FPV swarm drones dropped EMP bombs and incapacitated the electronics. Nikolai decides to sprint out across the forest while drones are chasing him, jumps into mud for camouflage cover, and hides in a tree burrow to avoid visual detection. He waited until evening, making no movements. Since the enemy drones are unable to pick up visual findings and central command decides to return the drones to NATO bases in Poland and Hungary.

Nikolai exits the burrow and comes back to the ruined municipal hall with sharp vigilance. He cried over his comrades' bodies desecrated by the efficient brutality of war machines, scattered around the municipal hall. Nikolai takes refuge inside the hall, the generator and cathode ray TV are not busted by EMPs. He activates the diesel generator to power the lighting and heater. Nikolai turned on the TV in the hope that the situation would not escalate into full blown global war.

The news appeared that the Russian prime minister would take over the provisional executive role and declare war against NATO. The Russian military is strategically placing all ICBM mobile platforms on the border of Western Europe and sending a fleet of nuclear submarines to the maritime border of Northern and Southern Europe. The Russian military renewed the military doctrine which is more adaptable, way more focused on surgical strikes than mass mobilization, and launches surprise attacks against Alaska forcing the US to fight three-front wars.

In the next news channel, China successfully reunified with Taiwan in a series of political maneuvers because of the Odessa assassination incident orchestrated by NATO as a political crisis in the Taiwanese government is looming and getting more anxious about geopolitical unpredictability. The US declares war against China after the reunification incident and sends the naval armada to invade Taiwan.

Several Asian countries severed the diplomatic connections with the US and decided to close their military installations to deny embarking of logistics to pressure and wear down the war effort but the US military remains adamant and instead commences air strikes to wreak havoc in the Three Gorges Dam which is the very heart of China's prosperity and progress. China is on high alert, activated its electronic warfare infrastructures, air assets, and anti-air defenses also military-civilian industrial complex is operating day and night to sustain the bloody war within.

China heightens naval presence in South China Sea included the occupied island and Taiwan also blockaded it's own, in support of Chinese, Korean, and Japanese navies that are already disillusioned with the coercive policy of American imperial politics, rallying for independent Asian sovereignty. Formed 5 pronged defense in the western part and 3 pronged offense in the southern part to intercept the American naval offense.

Pentagon is now under immense pressure and crisis, the paperwork piling, bombarded with phone calls and screams of argument inside the conference room to strategize de-escalation through war game simulations. Secretary of Defense orders activation of DEFCON, the government is no longer reliable becoming as deaf as in refusal to back down to chauvinistic narratives.

Mobilizes the ICBM mobile-based platforms and activates all Ground-Based Midcourse Defense silos across 50 states to intercept incoming enemy ICBMs even if the margin of error is absolute. The Director of the CIA was executed by firing squad for treason and conspiracy involvement in the Odessa assassination incident. The director's execution televised globally, serves as a stark warning to people who brought humanity closer in brink of extinction.

Nikolai found a telephone in desk and fortunately, the landlines were still working and he called Major General Maksym Kovalchuk of Ukrainian Ground Forces, who answered hysterically. "Lieutenant, the Dead Hand system is online, our intelligence team and special forces attempt to strike deeper into Russian nuclear command centers to override the program but they captured and executed them on the spot. The gambit is over, Lieutenant. Better don't back and leave the country immediately, that's an order".

Nikolai teetered in rage, responding with fervor. "I will not leave my post, Major!. This is cowardice! and if we are unable to save this war, only to do is save and protect the civilians. This war has nothing to do with them and us!" Major General Mikhail sighed in disbelief but was optimism worth the gamble? Major General Mikhail affirmed on Nikolai's suggestion and only answered with grim sentiments. "I understand your dedication. Nikolai you're going to proceed with this final mission or you might regret it in the end if things don't end well?". Nikolai laughs and responds with sharp but iron steel resolve. "There's nothing to regret, Major. This is the final hour of humanity. Death is always an inevitable thing among the living."

Major General grimaced at Nikolai's defiance. "As you say, later the extraction team will come to rescue and clear the area to gather remains like information and weapons. Just wait, don't wander anywhere." Nikolai thanked the Major. After the rest and reflections, he ate dinner from canned foods and take bath. After that, the extraction team arrived and saluted each other.

The soldier with the sergeant rank politely greeted him. Her name is Olena Khmelnytsky "Lieutenant Nikolai Rozhdestvensky, you were assigned to civilian evacuation as a major general ordered. Primary mission is escort the civilian transportation to Sevastopol network bunkers and secondary mission is operate anti-air defenses alongside the Russian army. If you're curious, why do we need to collaborate with our own enemy? Thankfully, those idealistic Russian soldiers launch covert mutiny and seized Sevastopol over 6 hours ago. Also, our major general has good terms with them. Please stand by, lieutenant. In the next 2 hours, the civilian transport will follow us on designated routes. Stay alert and don't let your guard down. Do you understand, lieutenant?" Nikolai saluted and affirmed without hesitation. "Yes, sir" and the sergeant also saluted him back.

The sound of war sirens piercing across territories signs the hostile forces are launching an offensive. Sergeant Olena panics when receive the call from the Captain of the 19th Division while inside a military truck, escorting the civilians. "At 13:00, NATO and Russian forces with Central Asian and Balkan contingents mobilizing their own, and Kyiv is under siege, Major General Kovalchuk and his 19th Division are trapped in the city surrounded by the enemy. Forcing to fight 2 front battles." Soldiers pale at the gravity of the situation, and the atmosphere becomes more gloomy. Doesn't mean, the morale is shattered but the major general is more stubborn than expected. Refusing to surrender against the enemy despite the odds of victory is elusive, the senselessness become smokescreen to buy time for us.

There is no time to mourn, duty is as important as the primary objective. A private-ranked soldier equipped with thermal goggles shrieked in terror in comms. "There are incoming enemy drones, in swarm formation more than 50". Nikolai cursed deeply in frustration. "Shit, those motherfuckers are always ready to commit war crimes for fun. Sergeant, hand me the MANPADS (Man-Portable Air Defense System)."

A technical (a military gun truck) and its operator start firing at drone swarms. Nikolai locked one of the targets in visual optics, and the drone slipped past attempting to flank them. Missile launched and successfully struck the drone but there are still 20 drones remaining. Sergeant Olena opened the comms and called one of the operators of vehicle mounted laser system, asking for a status report. "How much power remains?".

Operators respond frantically. "This is bad, only 10% percent remain. Also the technicals is running out of bullets". Nikolai downed another 5 drones despite the 2 misses. MANPADS ammunition is already running out, he reached out for a sniper rifle with an optical scope and it switched to infrared mode. Taking down a drone with a sniper rifle is no easy task but it is a more economical answer to every crisis of war, snipers dominated modern war only fourth to air superiority, artillery, and bombs.

"I need a spotter and don't let miss even a single drone in sight". Sergeant Olena volunteers as a spotter for Nikolai and she wears the infrared goggles. Sergeant Olena scanning the area, a lone drone attempted to target vehicle mounted laser system and shouted. "Lieutenant at 11 o'clock" He shot the lone drone from the direction of 11 o'clock, hits propeller, and crashed into the ground. Nikolai is still anxious, the enemy drone is too fast for him. He ordered Sergeant Olena to turn floodlights and adjust the lumen intensity to temporarily blind the sensor fusion of enemy drones.

Enemy drones scrambling around when floodlight dazzles them, blinding both visual optics and sensor fusion. Enemy drone swarms are unable to maneuver effectively as infrared visuals are disrupted by high-intensity floodlight. Nikolai take advantage of situation and calmly aim at scrambling drones, hit one from 10 o' clock and Sergeant Olena reach out for assault rifle firing out at left and right flank angles with calm but suppressing dam of fear with precision, hit down 3 drones at same time and also Nikolai hit down from 10 o' clock, the sneaky drone attempt to aim at technicals.

The convoy arrived at Kharkiv speeding through the paved forest.

Chasing remains of 10 enemy drones collided with trees as real-time image monitoring from visual optics only appears with half-baked resolution, unable to identify the physical obstacles because of floodlight jamming. Also, even the drones fly at high altitude and form a kamikaze formation. The forest is too thick to penetrate. Trees are a real challenge to execute the tactic and their proven nature still remains supreme over man-made creations. Nature offers free protection despite its unforgiving temper and no gods involved in miracles.
