The giant grey claw hung suspended above their heads, its jagged, obsidian tips barely inches from Leon's scalp. Shards of steel and fine metallic dust drifted down like a toxic snow under the flickering emergency lights.

The carriage was a tomb of silence; even Sherry's labored wheezing seemed to stop as the air grew heavy with the smell of wet muscle and ozone.

"Down!" Noah's voice was a low, jagged whip-crack. He shoved Leon toward the floor and dropped into a crouch. "Stay quiet. Don't breathe." He mouthed the command to Claire and Ada, his eyes wide with a cold, focused lethality.

The four of them pressed into the shadows of the seats, their heartbeats sounding like war drums against the metal floor. On the roof, the monster waited. It was a predator listening for the vibration of a heartbeat through the steel.

Time didn't just crawl; it stopped. Outside, the roar of the tracks was a constant, mind-numbing static. Then, the roof groaned.

"ROAR—!"

A muffled, irritable sound—the noise of a hunter losing patience.

RIIIP—!! CLANG!!

The probing was over. The giant claw retracted and began a frantic, chaotic demolition. It worked like a mechanical excavator, peeling back sheets of reinforced iron with deafening screeches. The carriage buckled, the overhead lights strobing in a violent rhythm.

"He's coming through!" Leon hissed, his knuckles white as he gripped the shotgun.

Noah didn't panic. He traced a circle in the air with his finger, then pointed at the widening breach. Claire nodded, snapping an incendiary round into her M79. Ada leveled her pistol, her thumb flicking the safety. One chance.

With a final, tooth-aching groan of metal, a massive section of the roof was torn away and tossed into the darkness. A rush of cold tunnel air flooded the car, revealing the nightmare above.

William Birkin. Or what was left of him.

His skin was a sickly, translucent white, his muscle tissue proliferating like melting wax. His right arm was a mountain of jagged bone and sinew, still trailing the tatters of his lab coat. But it was the shoulder that held the horror: the massive, bloodshot eyeball spun frantically in its socket, locking onto the living things below. Birkin's distorted face stretched into a sickening, pathological grin.

"Fire!" Noah roared.

BOOM.

Claire's incendiary grenade shrieked upward, striking the giant eyeball square on. The explosion turned the breach into a furnace.

BANG! BANG!

Leon's shotgun followed, a rain of lead shredding Birkin's torso. Noah and Ada opened up with their handguns, wove a net of lead around the monster's head. The combined fire was a wall of steel. Birkin's giant eye turned into a scorched mess of yellow pus, and his body was ventilated by a dozen new holes.

Pain—the only thing that could still reach him—forced a sliver of sanity back. Realizing he was a stationary target, Birkin let out a resentful shriek, slammed his claw into the roof for leverage, and vaulted into the darkness behind the train.

The silence that followed was heavy with the smell of cordite.

Leon slumped against a seat, gasping. "Is that bastard an unkillable cockroach?"

"Leave him!" Claire scrambled to Sherry's side. "Noah, look at her!"

Noah dropped his Python and knelt. He touched the girl's forehead. The heat was still there, but the "volcano" had cooled to a simmer. The fever reducer was holding the line against the G-virus.

"She's stabilized," Noah said, his voice echoing with relief. "The virus is dormant for now. We need that lab."

As he spoke, the train's brakes began to shriek. The carriage jolted violently as it slowed, eventually coming to a dead stop.

Ada looked out the breach. "We're here. This is the cargo lift. Beyond it lies the Hive—Umbrella's heart."

Noah, Leon, and Ada jumped out onto a massive circular platform. It was a cold, industrial disk suspended over a black abyss. While Leon and Ada headed for the control room to activate the lift, Noah stayed behind, his Python scanning the shadows.

A few muffled shots rang out from the control booth before the broadcast system crackled to life.

"Lift system activated. Ascent in sixty seconds. Please return to the safety zone."

Leon and Ada emerged, Leon looking like he wanted to ask a dozen questions but seeing the "don't ask" look on Ada's face. They boarded the train just as the massive mechanical locks engaged. The platform began its long, humming descent.

For a moment, there was a strange, fragile peace. Leon was chattering to Ada, earning a rare, soft chuckle from the agent that seemed to light up the car. Claire leaned her head on Noah's shoulder, her eyes fixed on Sherry.

Then the peace was shredded.

SCREEECH—!

A metallic tear, sharper than a scream, erupted from the wall right next to Ada. A giant, grey claw punched through the side of the train without warning. Birkin hadn't jumped off; he'd been clinging to the exterior like a parasite.

The torn metal edge acted like a razor, slicing deep into Ada's thigh as she tried to twist away.

"Ugh!" Ada collapsed into a pool of her own blood, her face going ghost-white.

"Ada!" Leon's smile vanished, replaced by a raw, primal scream.

"That bastard is still here!" Claire barked. She shoved Sherry into Noah's arms and grabbed her M79. Her eyes were burning with a mother's rage. "Noah! Patch her up! Leon, with me! We're ending this right now!"

The rookie didn't need a second order. He racked his shotgun, his face a mask of cold, murderous intent. "Noah, I'm leaving her to you!"

Noah was already at Ada's side, his fingers checking the wound. "The artery is intact," he called out over the wind. "Go! I've got her!"

Leon and Claire didn't look back. They charged through the breach and onto the moving lift, ready to finish the fight.
